The asterisk wing of Cooperstown.
I have a question - and I'm not trying to troll, I just cant find the answer anywhere else. Who paid for this investigation? Was it taxpayer funded, or paid for my the baseball commission?

If Banks were Bands, which would they be?
Hiya Jon!
What a stupid columm. Musical bands are not parasitic organizations driven solely by profit and greed.
You're aware of the manufactured band phenomenon?

March 8 is International Women's Day.
Maybe the statistics listed in this link will help explain why we don't really need an International Men's Day

tkchrist: You're right, the numbers I linked to in the Indepenant are overly simplistic. And many of them are about how life sucks in the developing world. But some of them were about the so-called rich world - how about:
Women in full-time jobs earn an average 17% less than British men
Women in part-time jobs earn an average 42% less than British men
67% of all illiterate adults are women (emphasis mine)... [more]

Oh, and TJ's in Newton, MA, has awesome paneer and frozen naans. Oddly, not all the stores seem to carry it though.

rxrfrx - while the refrigerated parathas at any Indian (or chinese) store are fabulous, I've never seen good naan in an Indian store - they're always rubbery and chewy. Although if there's a particular brand you can recommend, I'd love to try it out!
And banjo_and_the_pork, there's a couple of Indian stores in Somerville/Cambridge, if you don't want to trek to Brookline. Check out this link for names and... [more]

Actually delmoi, I remember discussions in the 80's referring to the First, Second and Third world nations. Definitions here. That terminology is no longer popular, and has been replaced by the developed /developing distinction instead.

Africans have to solve their own problems. And the only real guaranteed solution is massive population reduction and control.
I agree with the first part of the that statement - these are indeed our problems, and we need to find solutions that fit our circumstances. But while population control is key, to say that's the only real solution is simplistic. What are we to do with the current population? What about investing in education? Or, as... [more]

To add to PenDevil's point, many nations in Africa have plenty of natural resources. The Congo has more minerals under the ground than I can name, but unfortunately Mobuto stripped the country bare before he died. Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana have gold, Sierra Leone has diamonds. Botswana has diamonds and nickel.
Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania grow superior coffee. Central African nations grow good cotton, and if only they could export it at competitive prices, those ecomonies would do... [more]

Sorry - meant to add: this is happening to kids in war-torn areas all over Africa, such as Congo, Sierra Leone. Uganda's conflict, though, is certainly the longest running, and seemingly the most ignored by the rest of the world.
