What exactly is wrong with weight loss surgery?
There is a series on bariatric surgery at Junkfood Science - start here and follow the links on the sidebar.

So how does a person get to be super morbidly obese? Well, you can start with a little kid of about 6 years old who seems to be a little too pudgy, and take her to a nutritionist, where she’ll see little plastic models of food that tell her what serving sizes look like, and give her stickers when she sits quietly with an empty plate while the rest of the family enjoys dessert. Of course, that’ll just teach her to climb on top of the counter to reach the leftover cake on top of the fridge, but... [more]

Healthy Commitment
I think it's a fabu idea and all, but try this at work:
"Henry, you've been exactly one hour late every day this week. Why should I not fire you?"
"Well, you see, I've been more productive in the 7 hours I'm here because I was working out."
A) "Ah, yes. Carry on then."
B) "Right. Work out on your own time, Bub."
I'd venture to guess most people work for (B).

Microbes made me do it
I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see an article about obesity that includes photos that aren't stock photos of big bellies and butts. Well done, NYT.

If it's really driving you insane, the good folks at digg got all the way through and posted answers. I'm glad. I've got work to do.

Getting caught pulling the goalie
I'm so late to this thread. The YouTube link is down - removed at the request of WKYC. Amongst my friends and family here in Cleveland, we often threaten to call Carl Monday when things aren't going our way. He's been a joke in this town for as long as I can remember. But why I really really want to see this story is because my first job ever was at a Cuyahoga County Public Library branch, and about three weeks into the job (I was 15 at the time), I saw a guy wanking in the sci-fi aisle*.... Aha. Not the same guy as I saw. If Carl Monday wants a real story, he needs to check out what happens in those little rooms the books from the book drop go into. WOO baby!

Ashlee Vanilli
I watched the whole show last night, and during her first song, I was thinking, "Oh, she's not even a dancer and she's singing to a track." Look, I know pop stars do it all the time, but I respect it a little more when they record something that's even a tiny little bit different than what's on the radio.

Do you honestly believe that you hear about everything that the TSA finds? Okay, everyone out there who's been on a plane and has a blog is willing to share their experience about the $8 scissors they had to leave behind, but just because you don't hear stories on the news about loaded firearms, brass knuckles, stun guns, switchblades, blades disguised as phones, buckles, lipsticks, etc., doesn't mean that people aren't trying to bring them aboard. And funny enough, not only young middle... [more]

A kinder, gentler Critical Mass
I remember a call I got from my mother-in-law when my now husband and I were dating for about two years. I was at work, and I got a call from her that she started with, "First of all, he's going to be fine, but..." She was calling from the hospital; my dear one had been hit by a car while out on a bike ride. He ended up fine - his helmet was cracked, not his head, and five years later, you can just barely see the scars on his arm and leg if you know what you're looking for. However,... [more]

Why waste time with all that silly getting-to-know-someone?
Ljubljana - I thought that was probably the most interesting part of the site - I'm reading it as CYA bull, because I'm thinking it would be hard to fake the idiocy of the user commentary. Either way, I find it hard to believe the site hasn't received a cease and desist from every woman pictured.

Passion as a Roman Ritual Sacrifice
I wish I could find my copy of the article... or the paper I wrote... or anything to substantiate what I'm about to mention since I'm short on memory at the moment... but during a course on the ancient novel, I read an article comparing the Acts of the Apostles to the romances of the time. Many striking similarities in structure and elements.

"Golden Girls" is one of the few remaining reasons I still have cable.
And according to their quiz (in the 2nd link), my inner Golden Girl is Sophia. I always thought, though, that each of the girls represents an aspect of personality that, when combined, creates a balanced woman: Sophia for her wit and vigor, Dorothy for her sensibility, Blanche for her sexuality, and Rose for her naive sweetness.

decisions, decisions
"YOU ARE NOT GAY, but everyone (including your parents) thinks you are, and they are very patronizing about it, "Sure, sure you're straight, we all know you're straight, that's wonderful! Whatever your sexual preferences are is ok with us...". In addition to that, you also smell like burning feathers."
Um.... burning feathers? What?

Goodnight.
These groups seem like they must house a greater sickness - the desire to encourage people to kill themselves. Obviously, members who "benefit" most from the group can't report back about how things have worked out for them. Who hosts the discussion? If they are such experts on the methods of and reasons for suicide, why do they exist?

Thanks for that perspective, mdn. Suicide is something I can't begin to try to understand. I'm fortunate enough never to have been affected by it.

Bra specialist
At my bachelorette party, one of the strippers proclaimed he could determine any woman's bra size. After cupping my breast, he guessed - 3 full band sizes and one cup size off. I was not impressed.

Insert "beached whale" joke here.
By the way, I am taking side bets as to how many posts it will take for this to devolve to the inevitable: "Fat people are bad." "No, fat people are fine." "Lose weight, lazy slob." "Not everyone can." "Yes they can." "No they can't." "Yes they..."
Now that I've condensed all those posts into 2 convenient lines, carry on.

No. Absolutely not. If you don't check in over 250, they send you to the buffet. No admittance without cellulite.
Or, more realistically, the skinny people that are there, are there with fat people they respect. They shouldn't be a source of discomfort for anyone.

I live in a Mansion... With Wilfred Brimley?
Mine was surprisingly accurate; correct with husband, living conditions, model of car (though not color), and number of children.
Of course, had I experienced this much accuracy in the 5th grade, I would be married to Richard Dean Anderson.

My niece once colored all the bills in my wallet (okay, it was only $7) because she heard me saying I wish we had more colorful money. I think her designs were more attractive.
