Faceless People
With a name like "Eagle", I would've expected it to be Lotus' entry into the increasingly lucrative SUV market.
Alas, it seems it's an unholy marriage of a Lotus Esprit and an Exige

Wow, some of you are still afraid of cookies, huh? Hey, I heard there's this image floating around the internet, and if you even LOOK at it your computer will be infected with a VIRUS.
or, y'know, maybe we don't want to be tracked by 5 million different ad networks. Y'know, just.. maybe. Perhaps.

Switzerland for foodies?
I grew up & spent 20-odd years of my life in Luzern! :)
Best cheese shop in Luzern is "Chäs Barmettler", located here. The shop is quite small, but they have a good selection. And it's about 200° C inside in the summer ;)
If you want good swiss food (fondue & raclette), the "Lapin brasserie" near that cheese shop is really good.
btw, map.search.ch is invaluable if... [more]

My company's firewall is blocking my website. Is there anything I can do on my end to fix this?
The cPanel will probably be (should be) at some https:// address, which they SHOULD allow.
One trick I've found working at clueless companies that have the "i'm a cyber-policeman!" fascism dial turned all the way up to 11 is to append ?ibm.com to the end of the website you're trying to reach, eg. if your cpanel is at https://admin.example.com, try accessing it via https://admin.example.com?ibm.com
Reason that works is, they'll see... [more]

The Confederacy of Dunces
Loved the write-up of LGF... I used to visit his site religiously pre-9/11, mainly cos he had interesting things to say about web-dev stuff.
Then 9/11 happened, and his toilet backed up.
I remember sitting there, reading his nationalistic gibberish, and wondering why the fuck I had his site bookmarked.

Am I stupid or is there currently no way to add other instant messaging services (icq, jabber, etc.) on the profile page?
Cos, y'know... some very few of us aren't on AIM... :(

Oh, and we axed ICQ Number.
OK. FINE! >:[
Incidentally, what did you axe it, and what was its response?

But what about the micronauts?
I thought that those Helicopter hieroglyphs had long since been exposed as a hoax?
Also, Erich von Däniken should stick to mis-managing theme parks.

when they pry it from my cold, dead hands
Other companies will go "Hey, that's a good trick!" and we'll see this done a lot more in future.
The future? You mean to imply this kind of thing hasn't been going on for ages?

Or, a little checkbox "[x] This is a short link" on the post creation page, and then a profile option "[x] Show short links".
Or make a minimum # of characters mandatory.
Either way, it will wendell.

The IRS ain't gonna get my money! My wife's, however...
Thanks for those replies.
The wife tells me to mention that "the IRS requires non-resident aliens to apply for an individual taxpayer identification number which is called form W-7. This is because since you [meaning me, her husband] are not getting a SSN and not paying taxes...i still need to fill in some sort of identifying number for you [me]. when i file my taxes as married separately."

Travelling to Switzerland for New Year 08
Switzerland-born brit here :)
I second what cmonkey said wrt expensive train travel from Germany. My advice would be to go to somewhere in central Switzerland, like Lucerne. It's the town I grew up in, and has lots to offer in terms of touristy stuff to do, like hiking in the mountains (Pilatus and Rigi mountains), boating (everything from smaller boats to big paddle steamers on Lake Lucerne), ye olde rustical parte of towne, etc.
Also, because it's in... [more]

The War Will Be Televised
These videos, edited or not show actual events, and therefore add to the journalism we have been sorely lacking since this war began.
Say what? Videos of the guys on the ground calling in 500 lbs. bombs were a dime a dozen around 2003-2004, on every news channel around the world. They don't show it now cos it's old news.
And for the nitty-gritty stuff (eg, not the oddly "clean" hoo-rah crap on that militaryvideos site)... [more]

Self-linking comments
Why don't the powers that be add some link-checking thingy:
If the poster adds a link to his/her post which is the same domain of what the poster has in his/her profile, add "[posterX is affiliated with this site]" after the link?
Of course, that assumes that we all diligently and truthfully fill in all the sites we're affiliated with on our profile pages...
