Astronomy question: there's been a vertical green glow in the night sky, south by southwest (near the moon) for the last two nights in the Pacific North West. Any suggestions what it might be?

What was the camera technique used in CSI last night? During some transition scenes, Las Vegas was shown in a macro/blurred process, making the entire city look more like a miniature set than the real thing. It was posted on the blue before. Please help?

The significance of the dinosaurs' death has been greatly
exaggerated. This article in Nature discusses how mammalian evolution accelerated independent from the death of dinosaurs. The theory was derived from a "
supertree" [pdf ~ 1mb] of mammals and how common ancestors have branched out. Coolest info-graphic ever.

Does this hip-hop song ring a bell? It was produced in the last two years. It talked talked about either dead rappers, or famous rappers. The style of music was similar to those by K-OS or Common. Please hope me?

This is not resolved!
When a young man on a double decker bus in Hong Kong asked an older man to lower his voice whilst talking on the phone, the young man invariably became the receiving end of a torrent of half coherent phrase and insults about his mother. Naturally, you can watch it unfolding here since
the entire event was captured by another passenger with his cell phone.
This video has become one of the most viewed clips on youtube, spawning
remixes, rap, reenactments, new school yard sayings, and yes, t-shirts.
And they say youtube is just a site for narcissistic kids and tv show clips.
NSFW if you have co-workers who can understand Cantonese. And it's not the subtitle's fault, this guy really does rant off for a bit.

So
Apple Computer is being sued again by Apple Corp, and it is likely that Apple Computer will settle. Question: Why doesn't Apple Computer just outright make an offer to
buy Apple Corp? (And while they are at it, buy their music collection as well?)

If a bunch of kids decided to have a snowball fight on my lawn, near my drive way and if one of them gets hurt. Can they blame me? It's my lawn, but surely it's not my snow. I shovel my drive way but I do not encourage kids to come and have fights.

How do undersea (and trans-ocean) fiber optics communication cables and trunks terminate? Do they rise out of the beach like a giant mass and snake into some building or does it branch out under sea and connect underground? Question kind of prompted by curiosity about
this outage.

Language programs abroad. I'm a university student, I'm Canadian, and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good immersive program aboard for studying French or Chinese. I doubt I can be proficient in either in one summer, and I already have a very basic grasp of both. What I'm looking for instead is a chance to go aboard to develop my french or mandarin further. Any suggestions other than commercial programs geared for Business-persons?

Are there any special protocols concerning the use of photos/portraits of the POTUS? I'm asking because I'm curious as to why all the Presidents up to Bush I
here used a painting while Clinton and W. Bush used photos. Is there a set number of years before a President should get a portrait?

I have a laptop (Sony Vaio R505) with a lithium ion battery. Last night, I used the machine fine with out it being plugged into the wall (for about 2 hours). Today, when I tried using the machine after a full charge, it died within half an hour. I'm currently using XP with SP2 and google'd all the user groups. Any suggestions other than buying a new battery?

Weapon Notepad of choice. I'm looking for a new notepad replacement for Windows, something with a good looking and customizable GUI and can open fairly large files; syntax highlighting is optional. I've been using the freeware version of
EditPad for the last few years as my daily scratch pad. What would you recommend? And on a tanget, what text pads do people on other platforms swear by?

Here's an
article in the New York Post that initially looked like another bulletin on yet a new company being investigated by the SEC. But read the entire text. It has some
very strong words to say against the gaming industry and particularly this
game, calling it "10,000 times worse than the worst thing anybody thinks Michael Jackson ever did to a little boy".
Via Penny-Arcade, their reaction is really worth a read.
