iPod wallet?
I've got the DLO one that fusinkski links to and it's been perfect. Simple, sleek, looks good, and you feel like an FBI agent flashing a badge when you flip it open. There are little magnets that keep the flap locked in place when closed. I assume they don't erase your data.
I don't use it as a wallet but it's got a pocket on the inside flap where you could stash some cash and a couple cards, probably. It's got a clip on the back, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Song Recommendations: Fast and Under One Minute
Also John Zorn's Naked City. Lots of super-short, super-intense songs, sort of like bite-sized death metal. I've used them in movies. Same kind of stuff on a couple of the Fantomas albums, too.

Should Ulysses make me switch to mac ?
I used Ulysses for several years and just jumped ship to Scrivener this week. They're really geared toward people who write things scattershot, with lots of notes and research and bits and pieces to keep organized and interconnected. If that's not your style, then it'd probably be overkill to switch entire operating systems just to get access to these tools.
Of course there are 10 kagillion other reasons to get a Mac but let's not go there.

Should I purchase Infinite Jest now or wait for the new edition?
I got the new US version last night. It is a little smaller than the old paperback, but still pretty weighty. Paper quality seems perfectly acceptable. Has an intro by Dave Eggers that is all about convincing people to actually read the book. Supposedly some typos and errors were fixed. Only ten bucks. So: Nothing to get super-excited about, but I couldn't not get a new edition of my all-time favorite book. Come on.

At a film festival in Boulder, Roger Ebert...
Lynch is one of my favorite directors but I'm having trouble forgetting that MD was originally a television pilot, meant to introduce a bunch of characters and plot threads. If I decided to turn such an open-ended introduction into a cohesive movie, I'd probably do the same thing and tack on that last half-hour (which seemed to have a more typically Lynchian audiovisual style than the rest) which says something like: "It's, uh, it's all a dream..? Or I mean some parts are and others are... [more]

Here comes the backlash. Like a torrent of crap...
Yes, this backlash hit years ago, but I'm wondering if this is the second-generation of backlash. The weblog phenomenon started when a) the tools arrived to make the backend process easy, and b) a format was established that made coming up with content easy (annotated links and diary entries). So a lot of people got on board. But now a couple of years have gone by and recently I've been seeing a lot of posts from bloggers who are getting bored of the format and don't want to do the default thing... [more]

Metrocake: I use it for longish, single-page posts and it works like a charm. I had no complaints with Greymatter, but MT lured me away with its interface and various bells & whistles (changing dates on posts, synching up with a text editor, email notifications, pop-up comment windows, ability to access any number of logs from one page, etc.). Drop me a line if you want some more info on setting it up for a journal-type site.

Unless he's suckered some high school girls to pitch in (and I wouldn't be surprised if he did), it's still just Andrew running Pitas and Diaryland all by his lonesome. I have no idea how he keeps them running for free but we're probably all better off not knowing.

The last quarter of the year looks pretty promising, what with new movies from Lynch, Wes Anderson, the Coens, Linklater, the City of Lost Children fella, Scorsese, and Ocean's 11 by Soderbergh. A solid lineup of directors that I hope will make up for the rest of the year.

What's wrong with the subscribe feature in IE 5? I've flagged twenty-odd sites in my bookmarks and run a check now and then. Takes about ten seconds to see which ones have changed since I was there last. Seems relatively painless.

What I don't get is how it only took about a week for these airlines to lay off half their employees and require billions of dollars from the government. Were they that close to bankruptcy this whole time, living from week to week, secure in the knowledge that x number of people would fly each day? I can understand how the attack would irrevocably damage the industry, but this quickly?

For the last several months, music consumers...
Another solution is to focus your music collection to artists such as Oval and Pan Sonic and Pole - the inserted clicks and pops would probably be indistinguishable from the source material, and you could auction off the tracks as hard-to-find remixes for some supplemental income.
Now I'm wondering if anyone has created a song around the aural glitches that appear in poorly encoded MP3s.

I'll admit it's a perfunctory article, but a) it's about weblogs, what you do want, b) I think it's safe to blame the wearying title (sorry, Nick) on a Yahoo temp, and c) even freakishly intelligent writers like Heidi have to pay the bills. Try this, a diary of her ongoing attempt to completely absorb every single exhibit in the New York Museum of Natural History.

Heidi didn't work for Webmonkey, but she wrote some articles for us and bought us an office goldfish which started dying after a month. I was forced to euthanize it in chilled vodka (the boss happened to have some in her desk), the method recommended by our resident Fish Expert. I don't suggest doing this.

Metasynth is a great program, getting you to think about sound-generation from a different angle - I've used it to make a number of MP3s for my site. It's very difficult to get it to create anything aside from screeching noise or ambient drones, but if you want to launch your career as the next Pan Sonic - and who doesn't? - it's definitely the way to go. Relatively cheap, too.
