Going for broke
If you want the wide-angle, hardcore, massively informative viewpoint, I suggest you take a look at NYU Finance professor Nouriel Roubini's blog, especially his scathing essay-long post entitled "Who is to Blame for the Mortgage Carnage and Coming Financial Disaster?". It's not the easiest read, but it is well worth the effort. If you really want to grok the situation, Bill Cara has hosted the now-infamous Credit Suisse Report (PDF) explaining every aspect of this oncoming financial... [more]

I need my music fix!
Your local library has a variety of CDs for you to borrow, free of charge.
IANAL, but, to follow tdreyer's lead... what does legal mean, exactly? Either you can pay out the nose (CDs), have to deal with DRMed music (iTunes), or follow the letter (and certainly not the spirit) of the law in an absurdly brazen manner (allofmp3).
if, however, you feel that the current system is unjust, then paying into it is... feeding the hand that bites you?... [more]

Your future holds a flaming confection...
I think you'd be better off with a "psychic entertainer," and since I'm not a Chicago resident (although my grandparents came from there...), I plugged the terms "chicago" and "mentalist" into google. You should take a look at the results, but it looks like Scott Xavier would be a safe bet--apparently, he's a consultant to David Blaine.
Otherwise, I guess the best answer would be to do some legwork and talk to a few storefront psychics... [more]

Look under your seat!
Before you go for Oprah, try getting into some smaller markets. Oprah has plenty of shows planned out, but talk radio hosts often have hours to fill, and need a guest to fill the void. There are agencies that specialize in providing authors with publicity, and radio hosts (or television, for that matter) with content. Build up some buzz before you try to go for center stage...

Focalin question
Yes, I had a similar experience--methylphenidate (metadate CR, if you must know...) gave me a mild tremor, didn't really motivate me, and made me (more) irritable. Not only are adderall and dexedrine better drugs, they're also available as reasonably priced generics.
And, apparently, Focalin is an overpriced enantiomer of Ritalin, with virtually no advantage over the plain ol' racemic methylphenidate. It's a last-ditch effort by Novartis to keep a proprietary... [more]

SmartDalek: I have an interview with Penn and Teller in a magician's magazine (Genii, May 1995). The idea that "an association of magicians' societies were furious" with their exposé of "liftoff to love" is, as they would put it, bullshit. Here's a longish exerpt of the 10+ page interview...

Best Computer Reading Games for a 6-Year-Old?
I fondly remember playing Reader Rabbit on a Macintosh IIcx, when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I highly, highly recommend it.
Yes, paper books are good, but the drill-and-kill element of reader rabbit games is fairly important for allowing the child to attain speed/proficiency, and it also provides instant feedback as to how well the child is reading. Educational software should not replace traditional teaching, but augment it.

Hypothetically speaking...
According to medline, lamisil treatment garners the 1 in 45,000 risk of "hepatobiliary dysfunction" (i.e., liver damage). There are a lot of things that are far more dangerous. Still, it would be a good idea to go for some sort of liver-enzyme blood test, which will put you back about $20 (no prescription needed).
Plus, there's probably a low-cost medical provider (free clinic, teaching hospital, community college clinic, etc.) in your area that can properly... [more]

What can I do about my absent-mindedness?
All of the "absentminded" behaviors you're reporting are typical to inattentive attention deficit disorder, also known as ADHD-I. You should probably check out ASRS ADHD Self Report Symptom Checklist (18 questions ) from NYU med school's psych. department, just to be sure.
If the statements in it seem to describe you reasonably well (as they do for me), then going to a psychiatrist can make a world of difference in your life... you'll be extremely glad you did,... [more]

How do I let go and enjoy?
First and foremost, read this.
Then, you should start practicing extraverted behavior. Go to the mall (one not in your home town, if that makes you feel more comfortable), and just try locking eye contact with passerby, smiling at them, and greeting them. Go poke around in some stores and ask the salespeople some questions--after all, their job is to talk to you.
Now that you're warmed up, take off your wristwatch and ask someone for the time... [more]

24 Hours in Hollywood
Avoid Hollywood Blvd., it's a really seedy (and at night, hooker-y) tourist trap. Except for Amoeba--that's a good place. As recommended above, check out Melrose. It's also a seedy tourist trap, but a much cooler one.
And, also as mentioned above, go to the Farmer's Market/Grove for dinner. You will not be disappointed.

Reusing postage stamps
It would certainly cost more than 39 cents to prosecute (let alone to expend the labor to detect) this sort of low-level mail fraud, so you're pretty safe, legally speaking. If you insist on continuing this minor form of deviance, it would be wise to (re)use the cancelled stamps for paying bills.
Or sending letters to the elderly.

How can I improve my sleep with drugs?
Twiggy, one of the main advantages of Ambien et.al. is that they do not interfere with REM sleep, or normal sleep cycles. One can easily become dependent on Ambien to sleep, but it's also fairly easy to avoid--just don't take it more than a night or two in a row. As long as you get ~8 hours of sleep, you'll wake up reasonably refreshed, if not downright invigorated.
If you don't get the full 8, though, you will feel somewhat dizzy and woozy. Nothing terrible, but it's... [more]

Best kind of cooking oil?
Generally speaking, corn/safflower/canola/vegetable/grapeseed/peanut oil are all known as "neutral tasting" oils. They are all highly refined oils with high smoke points--which makes them fairly interchangeable for most cooking tasks. They are all also monounsaturated, which isn't as heart healthy as polyunsaturated extra-virgin olive oil.
As far as personal preferences go, safflower oil is usually far more expensive than the others, so I avoid it. I have... [more]

Is bipolar mis/overdiagnosed?
The current medical opinion is not that BP disorder is overdiagnosed-- it's quite the opposite, in fact.
One of my close friends was diagnosed as ADHD in grade school. I went off to college, and came back a year later to find that he was suicidal and had to be institutionalized for a period. Suprise, suprise. He's actually bipolar.
Whatever the end diagnosis is, just remember that the only stigma is the one you decide to accept.... [more]

I had a bar mitzvah, although I'm not a practicing Jew. I just found that image from heretical.com amusingly insane--and notice, I like women, Jews, and money. So, I WIN.
Heretical.com has the insane racist rantings of some British dude, along with some very interesting exerpts from an out-of-print book on game theory, by William Poundstone (who is, ironically, openly homosexual), "The Prisoner's Dilemma."

Perhaps she's onto something.
Compared to other OTC drugs, dextromethorphan has a relatively benign safety profile. Your friend may be exploring the fringes of medicine, but there is some solid science behind her experimentation. I'd still be concerned for her health--but a makeshift antidepressant is probably far better than none at all. As long as she's taking a reasonably low-level dose (~60 mg/day), I wouldn't worry too much. If she's pounding a whole bottle every... [more]

The best way to kill an earworm, or any sort of pervasive thought, is to count backwards from 100 (or another suitably large number) by 7s. Singing the entire song merely establishes its place in your psyche, leading to further insanity.

I've done self-hypnosis before, using this method. I guess the trance probably isn't as deep as one you'd get from a professional, because you remain self-conscious, rather than letting someone take over the thought process for you. It's pretty neat, though. You lose sensation in your limbs (well, more like, you start ignoring it) and get a feeling like being in a nice pool of mud.

It seems pretty implausible. Restaurants are often run on thin margins, with high overhead, operating costs, etc. Parsely doesn't seem like the sort of business that would lend itself to Costa Nostra-level profits, not compared to hookers, bootlegging, bookmaking and cocaine.
I wouldn't worry too much about the truth getting in the way of a good story, though.
