Ask post: Indie songs in TV commercials
Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On" was in a Jaguar spot a couple years ago. "Ginger" by the Lilys was in a Cadillac ad last summer.

Ask post: Waah, I want my fourth Chipotle taco
I was just thinking about this over lunch today. It used to be four crispy and three soft in Chicago and now it's just three of each. In Atlanta, however, where I had lunch today four crispy still seems to be the rule.

Ask post: "I am a member of no organized political party..."
I work for one of the top two Democratic presidential campaigns and I'm registered to vote in Michigan. Sadly, your vote (and my vote) will not count. The only candidates on the ballot in Michigan will be Hillary and Kucinich. All of the candidates, including Hillary and Kucinich, have agreed not to campaign in the state. No delegates are going to be awarded to the winner of the Michigan Democratic primary. All of this means that the media doesn't know how to cover the Democratic primary in... [more]

You can write in whoever you want, but I know my campaign has specifically requested not to have the write ins accepted. I suspect the others have done the same.

Sorry to monopolize the answers here... but for once this is something I actually know about. After the party stripped the delegates, most of the candidates requested to be taken off the ballot to send the message that they were serious about respecting the Party's wishes and skipping Michigan.

Ask post: More like St. Smellmo
A few I've heard on the presidential campaign I'm working on:

Manchester, NH = Manchvegas
Iowa City, IA = Iowa Shitty
Cedar Rapids, IA = Cedar Crapids
Ames, IA = Lames

Ask post: Political consulting firm interview: what to expect?
It really depends a lot on what kind of consulting firm it is. I'm a research consultant (or I was before I took off to work on a presidential campaign). We handled opposition and vulnerability reports for Democratic candidates. Other consultants do polling, or fundraising or TV ad production, or direct mail, or just general advice and consultation or any combination of the above. Generally a firm works for either Democrats or Republicans.

Expect to be asked about... [more]

Ask post: 43 Presidents, 43 Books
Oh dang it. I searched and everything. Oh well... if there have been any awesome NEW biographies published in the last year or so, I'd be happy to add them to the list.

Ask post: Free the internet!
You have to pay for the internet for the same reason you pay for phone service or electricity or cable television. It's a utility.

Ask post: Novels starring real people
The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr feature all manner of turn of the 20th century New York characters, including Teddy Roosevelt.

I really enjoyed Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks, which is a massive novel about John Brown.

I hated The Dante Club but it does fit your guidelines in that it features Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and James Russell Lowell.... [more]

D'oh! I also missed the "last century" bit. That pretty much disqualifies all of mine.

Ask post: Running trails near Hyatt McCormick Place?
Pedantic filter: Lake Shore Drive is actually US-41. The running on the lake front path should be perfect for you, and not too crowded that far south. Here's a map of the southern half of the trail

Ask post: Go Blue in Chicago?
Oh lord that was awful. For anyone looking in the future, however, School House at North and Clybourn is a non-obnoxious place to watch the games. Next question: how to rewind to this morning to un-see something?

Ask post: Tigers Or Yankees Bars On The North Side Of Chicago?
Argh? Really. I knew that I couldn't watch it as part of my Extra Innings package, but bars with satellite dishes and what not can't watch it either? That stinks.

Ask post: How to meet people in Chicago in their 20s.
I am a early to mid 20s professional in Chicago who has faced a lot of the same issues as you. It's been slow going, but I've started cracking the social scene through a combination of work, hanging out in bookstores and such and my university's alumni association. You don't mention where you went to school but all of the Big Ten schools have huge alumni networks here and I assume that lots of other schools do too. My e-mail's in my profile if you want to chat more or plot a lonely 20s meetup... [more]

Ask post: Greyhound or VaMoose from DC to NY and back?
VaMoose, definitely. When I lived in DC I rode them frequently and always found the buses to be clean and on time. Plus, they show (really awful) movies!
posted to Ask Metafilter by fancypants at 1:39 PM on June 12, 2007
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the sketch factor. Vamoose riders (in my experience) tend to mostly be 20-somethings heading up to New York for the weekend. Greyhound definitely draws a more interesting crowd. Whether that's up your alley or not is, of course, a personal decision.

Ask post: I've got mono. What now?
I had mono when I was 21. I had sort of a weird case in that my symptoms were extremely severe for about a week and a half and then *poof* I felt better. So much better that less than a month later I did a three week NOLS course horsepacking in Wyoming.

Anyway, during the time that I felt bad, I felt really bad. I had never been that sick in my life and I hope I never am again. My throat was so swollen that I had to be put on oral steroids so I... [more]

Hydrophonic, Working Bikes is original source of my trusty Schwinn, actually and I'm excited to give it back to them now that I've decided to step up. They're a great org.

Just a quick update in case anyone is still reading. I went to Rapid Transit (where the employees were extremely nice and helpful) on Tuesday and tried out a lovely Marin Muirwoods that I think I'm going to buy. Thanks for all the great answers!

Ask post: Learning to ride horses
It is a bit of a haul from DC proper, but when I was living there and coming back to riding as an adult, I rode at Linden Farm in La Plata, Maryland.

Karen Briggs, the instructor there is a really wonderful teacher and the farm holds special adults-only lessons. She did a great job improving my seat and my overall horsemanship after several years away from riding.

If I recall correctly, prices are pretty reasonable. I think I paid something... [more]

Thank you to everyone, even the guys telling me . I already wear pretty expensive bras and I shop at the "miracle" bra shop that's supposed to make everyone feel better about their breats (Intimacy - seriously it's been on Oprah and What Not to Wear and in about 9,000 magazines and it's a really nice store). While they do help, it doesn't do much for how I feel about having breasts this big (or for my wallet). I have a gyn appointment next Tuesday and will definitely ask her about... [more]

Ask post: Best source for weather-proof political campaign yard signs, including printing?
Even conservative causes tend to print their signs and literature in union shops. Why court trouble with the unions unnecessarily? I have managed campaigns and worked for environmental non-profits and you always always print union and make sure they put the bug on it.

Ask post: A career in anthropology?
I have a bachelor's degree in anthropology and I agree that it will give her a basic liberal arts preparation to do pretty much whatever she wants (except become a mathematician or a biochemist, I guess).

For example, I'm currently working as a political researcher and before that I worked for an environmental organization.

Anthropology is a wonderful field and I loved nearly all of my courses while I was getting my degree. You really get a little bit of everything.

Ask post: Has any good music ever come from the capital?
Nobody has mentioned Ted Leo or Chisel yet. I think he is a transplant FROM NYC which is rare since it usually works the other way. Also, not to pick nits with shoepal above, but Annapolis is not a "bedroom community" of DC. It's the capital of Maryland and about 30 miles from the city.

Ask post: What should I learn for doomsday?
Piggybacking on this a bit, what are some good books to read or activities to engage in to help a person learn agricultural/folk medicine type skills? I have the basics of vegetable gardening down as well as skills with draft animals, but how can I get to the next step of being self-sufficient in the worst case scenario?

Ask post: Help my local elementary school
One issue with vouchers that has not yet been mentioned is that they rarely cover the costs of attending a truly "great" private school. Therefore, families can move their children from a bad public school to a mediocre at best (usually religious) private school but they still can't move them into the top educational tier.

I am also deeply wary of any system that skims off the smartest kids with the most involved parents and leaves the rest to rot in the... [more]
posted to Ask Metafilter by fancypants at 7:19 AM on December 15, 2005
In addition to being interested in vouchers from an academic perspective, I am also a graduate of the Detroit Public Schools (K-12, 1987-2000).

I attended magnet schools the whole way through, so my experience isn't exactly representative, but I would say that I received an education that was comparable to what I would have received at all but the best of the city's private schools (Country Day, Cranbrook, U of D).

That said, the facilities... [more]

Ask post: Starting salaries at DC NGO jobs?
I have just such an entry level job at a non-profit organization in DC. I make a little more than $25K a year which is a little low, but by no means unusual. It is VERY hard to find an apartment in this town that is affordable on that kind of salary. I live in a group house and the rent is still more than I'd ideally like to pay. This whole town runs on the underpaid labor of young professionals. If you have any questions about neighborhoods or job hunting, feel free to e-mail me. My... [more]
