It's either Ad Center or this. I want to do this.
There are many people who spent 2 years and about $50,000 to 'put a portfolio' together. I happen to be one of them. But you know, there's also weird stories of people who got hired just from a few headlines scrawled on plain paper. It also depends on where you're trying to get hired, the portfolio schools are geared towards employment in the big boy ad agencies, but there's certainly a larger world outside of them.
If you have no computer design skills or can't draw,... [more]

What and where are the best beverages in the world?
Oh, the kind of place I would seek out for some of these beverages are obvious, like specialist wine shop or a japanese supermarket for Pocari Sweat. But there being so many of those in NYC, like a tea house even, I'd like your recommendations on where the best likely place would be as far as overall experience or "I'll sure they'll have it."
And generally looking for beverage alternatives that have that "interestingness" with those in the post, like... [more]

I don't have anything against the newspapers suggestion (well I guess I do, it's way schoolteacher "fun"), but if you want my advice you'll figure out a way to put Lazy Sunday in the capsule.
It is, by far, the best archive of everything that regular people cared about in 2006.

The dirty secret with Photography Students is that CostCo does 12x18s for a couple of dollars with pretty fair glossy/matte quality if you know what you're doing.
The posters aren't too much more expensive either.

We'd start drinking Sam's Cola. And nobody wants that to happen.
You have to consider, that in many places coke is the drink of choice over that dastardly Water brand, so they have to keep it going.
But I admit, Dr. Thunder is delicious.

I have the AIWA CDC series like here with the front panel aux in. Does what I needed it to do at $100, an even provided a little boost. I still have to have the Monster charger to keep the iPod juiced though. So all in all I spent like $200 to let me play my iPod in my car without resorting to shitty radio reception.

how to set up a college computer lab
What do you mean, a Graphic Design Lab? Animation? Always go for a really good scanner, and a really good printer.
As much as I'd like to tell you to get them G5s with Adobe CS2, but honestly until you're some guru of the pen tool you won't fully maximize that stuff. But go ahead and load 'em up if you got the cash. If I was a student I'd rather have a loaner digital camera than the newest photoshop.

What lessons taught you the most about graphic design.
The only reason you're a graphic designer instead of an artist is that you're working for your client. The second you try some high concept art crap that only you can figure out is the second you begin failing as a graphic designer. Seven elements of design, design history, Milton Glaser, Sagmeister, what the fuck ever, you're working for somebody else. That's it.

How many hours a week do you really work?
I think an interesting question would be, "If you job was to be creative, how long do you spend working?"
When I'm slacking off, you could say I'm just letting whatever creative ideas I'm having coalesce. That doesn't mean I disregard deadlines, which in Advertising, is pretty much nonstop.
So I'm pretty much working 40+ hours a week, despite it seeming that I'm just drinking beer most of the time.

According to Back to the Future 2, dust jackets will become sought after antiquities, especially when attached to Sports Almanacs.
So you can look at it from the perspective that you may make some money on them someday, or realize that if the future has no need for them (and this is a future with hoverboards), then you can throw them away now.

I'd like to see wackier Gadget reviews. I mean, this day and age anybody can look up the tech specs or a blog review online for an iPod.
I would like to see field tests on how the iPod does in a drop test, or how much damage it exerts when you're beating someone with it. Or a car road test written by a James Bond secret agent, where he tests how big the air pocket it underwater and notes, "Can only be modified to hold 4 SAMs."

Stick with CMYK since it seems like you're inexperienced, and really, Pantone comes in handy when you've got large-run budget issues or branding things to worry about. Anyway, I don't have much to comment on this, except I'm going to remark on this interesting Western/Eastern difference between the two. I've been to a lot of casinos, mostly populated between old american retirees, and asian people.

1 ) Observation - Realize what situations are interesting to people. Be sure to listen and watch everything about a conversation. Try to figure out what topic makes your audience's eyes glimmer or crack a slight smile. You mentioning "Nerf Balls" may unlock that secret... [more]

It's also one of those work as hard as you want to jobs. You could bust your ass and make some dough or wake up at noon and only pound the pavement 4 days a week.
