Is it OK to accept a gift of ivory?
I once read an article about an archaeologist digging in an ancient Mayan sacrificial site. Here he was, unearthing the remains of people who had been ceremoniously tortured before being killed. What struck me was a comment he made as he unearthed the remains of these forgotten people. He said, to paraphrase, "I try to treat them with care and love now knowing that they were not treated the same at their last moments." If it were me, I would put the necklace in a safe and quiet place... [more]

Oops, forgot the first part of the statement:
I think that the refusal of the gift would have caused more of a problem, but I personally would avoid wearing it. The display of ivory (and fur, and diamonds) is problematic in that it does encourage a demand or desire for the product. I think this is less true of ivory where I live (US), but the demand is not totally eliminated.

Women and Winter Boot Help
I have these and they have done very well in Buffalo and the Buffalo Southtowns (notoriously worse weather than the Metro Area). They are sort of knock-off Sorel-ish, but I have had nothing but great experiences with them.

Hardcore, theater type tips needed? Alcone.
Buy all the Kevyn Aucoin books (may he rest in peace). He was the master. Simply the best.
She can go get the lessons and get the pricey makeup (for somethings it does matter-- foundation and shadow; less so for lipstick), but she should go to the drug store and buy a bunch of cheapies, take them home, and one night when she is not doing anything, make... [more]

The Baha'i Religion - Am I missing anything?
The Baha'i Faith isn't really cool with gay people.
I had a friend in college who is Baha'i and she was really great, but she was really convinced that Baha'i was 'the answer' in kind an an odd way. She didn't think people were evil or sinners and she didn't try to convert at all. It wasn't that, but for instance, she did give people a hard time about drinking alcohol, despite never having had it herself. It was less "you are bad" but more "I have no idea... [more]

It occurs to me that my answer looks as if it were just my friend who does not believe in homosexuality-- this is not the case, as far as I know. She did show me some sort of religious guide where it defined love and marriage as being between a man and a woman. FWIW, Wikipedia notes this as well, and I am finding similar information elsewhere (Religious Tolerance, etc.)

Four year loyalty vs. seven year's work?
I went to the same school for a BA and for my PhD. My MS is from somewhere else. I actually went back and worked at the place I got my MA.
Undergrad. Large Public, cheaper. Like Lucretius Jones, I got nickeled and dimed there. Fee fee fee for things I never used, and in some cases, never even saw. Draconian parking laws and an artificial scarcity of parking spots. I was also mugged on campus and I got zero by way of support from anyone. It was not that I needed it per... [more]

Detergent, as in clean sheets, couch throws, etc. Steaming fabric furniture twice yearly (if safe for that fabric-- check).
Cedar in the closets only.
Bathrooms are the only place one can break the "air additives" rule. 1-2 drops of a citrus oil or a lavender oil in the toilet bowl after you use it. Lid up or down, a gentle barely-there scent will hang in the air-- not enough to consciously notice.

konolia is right. When someone thinks they are in a monogamous relationship and they aren't, their health is at a real risk. The ex-girlfriend may not think she has an STI, the boyfriend may have slept with more than just her...the possibilities are frighteningly endless.
Health comes first. He tells her or you do (anonymously, if you must).

Is cat pee a capital offense?
You may have a hard time finding a vet who will euthanize for this issue. It is also not necessary. There are cat rescues-- they may be able to help. The anxiety you have about his problem is rubbing off on him, more than likely. So we need to stop the anxiety cycle.
First off, if you have 2 cats, you should have 3 boxes. I have learned the hard way that # of cats+1 is the way to go. Three small boxes will not be bad to take care of. Really, after one (and with us as... [more]

You sound like you will be a perfect fit--fencers come in all shapes, sizes and ages. At 6'3", and lean, you scream epee, so do not be surprised if a coach tries to steer you in that way. I had a boyfriend like this who used this kind of talk to try to "sway" me to his way of thinking. It was more cats v. dogs, and later places to live and politics and religion. I came to realize that he had his own ideas and a plan. When I did not seem to go along with it, he was using talk like this to try to put me in my place-- that is, my place in his plans.

Formal Time Commitment to Hobby + Grad School = ?
Do it. You need that time. When I was in my program, I budgeted 5 full hours a week to screw around. Sometimes I borrowed from one week to add to another, sometimes I went full over, and sometimes I didn't take it at all. I think, though, if I had an obligation to goof off with others at a certain time every week, I would have kept on schedule more with that time and with my work.

You can be deeply emotionally involved. You can also kick him to the curb. This, in fact, helps you be less emotionally involved.
Perhaps you are not the kind of person who is used to making these kinds of choices and being this assertive. This is the time to try. We did not make the bed, but we must lay in it.
Just an update for anyone who cares--
The kind of insider information I was looking for happened to come from the inspector who looked at the bed: Leave the mattress tags on no matter what. Also, always buy or get the frame (some kind of frame) and never put the bed on the box spring on the ground. If either of those conditions is not met, the inspector will almost immediately reject the mattress. It is also worth it to use some sort of padding or cover between the... [more]

Make a vinegary cole slaw with onion. Very little mayo. Forget any sweetening sugar, pickles, etc. It really should come close to making you cry.
Take 2 slices of rye bread. Place one half slice of cheddar cheese (thin) on bread.
Slop on a bunch of slaw, then put on a ton of black pepper.
