I have an external firewire hard disk sitting on top on a powered monitor speaker on my desk here. Is this a terrible idea? Will it shorten the life of the drive? What's a safe distance?

Windows XP reinstall troubles. I'm fixing a laptop for a friend of mine, but in the middle of Windows XP Pro reinstall, the installer stops at 35 minutes remaining, while 'Installing Devices'.

I moved to London (SE4) just under a month ago. I've already found a great job (this is good), and I'd like to get broadband at home. I ordered ADSL from Demon just before I moved, I am still waiting for it to be installed, a month later.

Having recently splashed out on a nice black PowerMac 5500/275, I want to upgrade the RAM. I'm aware that it takes 168pin, 5v EDO DRAM (up to two 64mb DIMMS), but finding these in the UK is tough. I won two 64mb chips on eBay at 1p, but they're the wrong voltage. Anyone know a (cheap) supplier of the stuff here in England?

I recently got hold of a PowerMac 5500/2275 (the black one with the TV tuner), but the ethernet port has been upgraded, and is now a modem. While this is all very nice, I'd much prefer it to have LAN functionality. What, exactly, am I looking for on eBay to equip this Mac with a network card, and how difficult are they to install?

So, I bought my friend Tom a G3 PowerMac on eBay, which turned up, then booted to a blank screen. After a reboot, it started up, then the power supply went flash, bang and off. I've since connected my PC's power supply to the G3, tried the PRAM battery from my G5, and no luck. When the power button is pressed, the fans in the PSU twitch, and the lights on the motherboard come on, but then go out straight away. Is this a power supply compatiblity thing, or is the logic board fried?

In six months time, I'm going to move to London (from Wakefield, West Yorkshire). A few of friends of mine (housemate, old friend, college friend) plan to get a house/flat together. I graduated this Summer (BA (Hons) English & Creative Writing), and am working in a bar and doing freelance web design in the meantime. I want to know what I should be doing now to get ready; when and where should I start looking for a Real Job, and when and where should I look for places to live? Does anybody have any other advice for migrating to the big smoke?

I have an xViD .avi movie, 119minutes, that I'd like to put onto DVD. Toast claims that it can't fit it on (5.7gb required, 4.4gb of my 4.7gb writeable DVD available). What I'd like is to be able to requantize the movie so that it fits onto the DVD. Bonus points for an OS X application. Super bonus points for a free one.
That I don't have to find a crack for.

HomeRecordingFilter. Of course, I'm recording an album at home. I'm already using a Rode NT1A mic, but I want to get the effect of a vocal coming through and old radio. I understand that I can fiddle with the EQ controls in CoolEdit (I mean, Adobe Audition...) and emulate the desired effect, but does anyone have any more tips to get the vintage wireless sound? While I'm at it - does anyone have any home recording tips in general?

I'm in the UK, and I keep seeing delicious guitars for sale over on eBay in the US at equally delicious prices, many of which are entirely unavailable over here. I didn't get it until I was 17. Now I'm 21 and it's driving me mad. I've tried nasal spray, over the counter pills, prescription stuff, but all they offer is a day or two of respite before this goddamn
hayfever comes back again, full force. My current pack of Clarityn has also (scarily) caused an unrelenting twitch in my right lower eyelid. Which I don't like. So, does anyone have any surefire, solid gold remedies for hayfever? IS this injection I've heard about any cop? And who do I have to sleep with in the UK to get it?

I've just been contacted by an art buyer from a large advertising agency in the US, who is interested in purchasing the use of a photograph I have in a gallery on from my web site for use on a poster for one of their clients. I took the photo myself, still have high resolution versions of it, and have never done this before. How much should I ask for? PS - Make it quick!

I need a photo or map of the Bermuda trangle area, preferably a physical (rather than political map), if satellite photos can't be found. I need it at a decent resolution, too. Something that could be printed on A4 without looking too mucky.

CoolEdit Pro plugins. Which playing guess-and-play with the inbuild Graphic EQ plugin with CoolEdit Pro 2 is all fun, I'm looking for a graphic that will display a VU/EQ of the track behind the EQ of the track. Kinda like the little VU in WinAmp, but with EQ controls in front of it. Also; anyone know any other killer CoolEdit plugins?
