MeTa post: I've got a bunch of good mixes just waiting to be made.
I'm in, though I really really completely hope that I get more than two this time round. Maybe the North American address will help better this year, maybe not. I remain optimistic.

MeTa post: I just added so many "acquaintances" and "met" to my contact list!
Vancouver's slowly starting to spook me out on how often I run into acquaintances. I know this happened from time to time in other large cities, and it's super common for me to be in a smaller town for a few days and get to know people, but almost any given week, I bump into someone in this terminal city that I wouldn't figure on being at that spot at that time. Most odd, like serendipity as a way to set your clock.

As meetups go, I'll give a pre-emptive shoutout to all... [more]

MeTa post: Vancouver Meetup
I down with the 9th. The fact that I'm moving into town now means less bus schedule glancing on my part.

And for the lurkers out there, or anyone thinking about inviting non-members along, it is more than cool to show up.

Well, you can always do the social thing and ask the various people at the venue to see if they're with Metafilter; it's worked reasonably well in smaller venues, especially when close by the door. Or you can memorize all the uploaded profile photos here. Someone once made MeFi cards that could be printed out, but I can't find the link for them or who made them.

MeTa post: Jessamyn, meet Vancouver.
Ooh, I can make it, kinda. VIFF is fully on and I have a 9:30 viewing but I can mix and mingle for a bit depending on what time everything starts at.

Man, in many ways, I wish didn't have to leave so early. It was a jolly night out and good to put names to faces. A pleasant sort that will soundly chide anyone that deserves it.

Is there still a rusted-out car waiting for me in Vermont?

How are your sheetrocking skills?

Uh, rocks come from sheets? I thought rocks come from cans that were placed there by a man in a factory downtown.

Sadly, my forte lies more in the destructive arts, and tarring driveways, so anything involving installing things carefully is best left to professionals over well-intentioned me.

And how was the movie?

My... [more]

MeTa post: VIFF Meetup?
I've got 3 evening tickets so far: Control, My Winnipeg and Lust, Caution. Having Thanksgiving in the midst of the festival does make additional viewings difficult since my family's out east but I'm still trying to read up on which other films catch my fancy.... [more]

MeTa post: Steep and Deep: Mefi Whistler Summit 2007
Ooh! Though I can't plan three hours ahead to save my life, count me as tentatively keen. If this winter is half as good as last winter, conditions should be more than fine.

MeTa post: Metafilter Tokyo gathered in 2007.
More details from me later once I get some sleep and sober up. Since we talked behind all your backs at the annual meetup, you can gossip about us for a bit until our senses return.

But before I forget, I really appreciate meeting everyone who showed up and thanks to everyone who helped organize this shindig.

And myopicman, I can't believe you actually uploaded everything before you got some sleep.

My philosophy is momentum: if I wasn't going to upload them that night, my hangover would've prevented anything sensible today and my memory of who was there would've vapourized.

But yea verily, fun was had and I now have to watch for people grabbing at my clothing. I remember grabbing a moth out of the thin air above (and not eating it)... [more]

MeTa post: Tokyo Meetup Reminder
Just as a warning: I can get easily lost, especially when I can't read the characters. I have the directions, I'll figure out the JR stop but yeah, I might wind up somewhere else altogether, so I might be late.

MeTa post: MeFi Tokyo meetup
As long as it's before June 24, I'm fairly easy. Unless I'm shipped off to somewhere in Asia before that time. My track record for meetup attendaces is an 0-fer in every city I've been, so apply caution to whatever promises I make.

15th is fine by me. Roppongi works well too, though I'd prefer Daikan'yama or Omotesando for the vibe of both neighbourhoods. Then again, I'm in Ningyocho, which is an odd local scene, so I'll take any location with any sense of buzz.

Super-Deluxe looks awesome. I might try a sneak peek later this month if that's the joint.

MeTa post: MeFi Swap Tracklists
Dang, my copy of the "Please Enjoy" mix arrived damaged too; I was only able to hear the first 4 tracks before what looked like water damage caused an inordinate amount of skipping. Thanks, mystery mixer! Um, can I get another copy? or does someone have the MP3's lying about?

I'd cut and paste my tracklist from my swapset, but I already made a web page with it: "A casual malice you can apply with the usual finesse." The mix was originally going to be... [more]

MeTa post: NOT raining on florence....honest!
Speaking of OMG, Paul Shaffer wrote "It's Raining Men"?! I was born and raised in the town that begat "It's Raining Men"?

Well, it beats "Fortune Teller", but damn, how flipping surreal.

I'm in again, after missing the past couple due to my inability to stay in one spot for more than two weeks. The entire timespan of this round has be staying put for the longest time in a year and a half.

What up to TheDonF and shelleycat, for their mixes from the past.

MeTa post: Congratulations!...
I vote for "Hee Haughey" myself, but then again, I've been asked by numerous souls to refrain from naming children.

Congratulations Matt! May 1 would fit in well with many people in my family:
April 30 - mother.
May 1 - her aunt.
May 3 - that very aunt's son.
May 4 - Jedi Day.

Mark this East Coast visitor as a "maybe". I'm in the Van for several days, so I'll give it a shot if I get my bearings after a trip to the mountains.

I'm never around for any of my local meetups, so might as well try a foreign port.

even though i'm in nyc for a year now, and i lived in toronto for 6 years, home to me will always be thunder bay. 8 hours east of winnipeg, 7 hours west of sault ste. marie and 4 hours of duluth equals one weird middle of nowhere that's looked up to by the rest of northwestern ontario.
