New York No Wave Archive. "
No Wave was a short-lived but influential
music and art movement in downtown New York in the late 1970s and 1980s. The
name was a
reaction to the sanitized Punk Rock trading under the name '
New wave' for those people who wanted a sanitized version of punk." Also,

The Paisley Underground. From about 1982 to 1985, the Los Angeles club scene featured a bunch of guitar bands on the verge of being the next big thing, including
The Dream Syndicate,
Green on Red, The Long Ryders,
The Rain Parade,
Game Theory (later known as
The Loud Family) and, of course,
The Bangles (the only ones who managed to actually become a big thing).
Michael Quercio of
The Three O'Clock and
Salvation Army inadvertently named the scene "
Paisley underground" when he made an off handed joke during a radio interview. Most of the bands are now, to borrow a phrase from
Game Theory leader
Scott Miller, languishing in national obscurity, as opposed to local obscurity.

Glossophobia aka
Lalophobia or, more commonly,
stage fright is allegedly the
biggest fear for Americans. If you experience it, you are hardly alone. Many well known performers, including
Sir Laurence Olivier,
Barbara Streisand,
Donnie Osmond,
Dusty Springfield and
Andy Partridge of XTC, share your fear. Indeed, all kinds of performers suffer from it,
including musicians,
jugglers, and
public speakers. Many
people have (sometimes contradictory)
advice about
overcoming your fear of
speaking in public. However, in a pinch, one can always use a
Beta Blocker. Drinking booze, however, is not frequently recomended.

This site provides more background and links to some of his important decisions. Here's one

A break in the strange case of Judge Joseph Crater. In 1930, Judge Crater, later dubbed
"The Missingest Man In New York", stepped into a cab and was never seen again. He left behind
a mourning wife and one of New York's most enduring mysteries. For 75 years, his disappearance has been the butt of many
dumb jokes and also has been the subject of the
occasional book.

author, and one time editor of the long defunct
ITN resource - brings something like David Fincher's
The Game to life. Interactive Theatre describes forms of theatre that directly involve audience members in the action, from plays like
Tony and Tina's Wedding to kitschy dinner theatre like the
Murder Mystery Players to the one actor/one audience member pieces of
Cruel Theatre.

Buried Treasure Found In Backyard. (Google cache) "The men were digging holes to plant trees in a friend's back yard when Crebase hit a wooden crate buried less than a foot below the surface. Inside were seven rusted cylindrical cookie tins, including one where 'National Biscuit Company,' and the word 'Ginger,' were legible through the thick rust. They flipped one of the tops, which was fastened with two hooks, and found it 'jammed' with the money."

Did The Wizard of Oz inspire Lord of the Rings? "The first film version of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz was released in the summer of 1939, less than a month before World War II officially began. Though started as early as 1937, The Lord of the Rings was largely composed during the war years, but not published until somewhat later. Therefore, it is by no means impossible that J.R.R. Tolkien saw the magnificent MGM movie before he wrote most of his magnum opus. Could Oz have influenced his tale somehow, consciously or unconsciously?"
