Really?
As long as you're comfortable with somebody writing nasty things about people you admire after they die (in my case, Kurt Vonnegut, for example), I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to write nasty things about somebody you abhor when they die.
On the other hand, if there are some people you feel don't deserve even the slightest criticism after death, tread carefully. Everything you feel about the people you hate somebody else feels about the people you admire.... [more]

Who was bad-mouthing Kurt Vonnegut?
Well, davismsc for one.
I also, for the official MeFi record, I welcome Christians here. I welcome people who want to celebrate and defend Oral Roberts. When I say "fuck Oral Roberts," it should not be construed as me disliking his supporters anymore than my saying "fuck Spuds McKenzie" means I hate all beer drinkers.

blood from a stone
Previously. This is good. Virtually all of the salient points about the value of having your marrow in your countries bone marrow registry have been made. That said, registering to donate marrow - and then actually donating if you're ever a match - can profoundly impact somebody's life. Even if they remove it from you the old fashioned way (through the pelvis), the small discomfort is more than balanced out by the knowledge that your small inconvenience quite literally saved somebody's life.... MetaTwitter? (or, Kill It While It's Young)
Standing in the way of the direction that internet lingo is developing sounds strangely like "hey you kids stay out of my yard-ism." Language use is going to develop the way it wants to develop. If you don't like the use of the "@," then don't use it. If its a useful and effective way for somebody else to communicate, why should you care that they use it, or that they use it here.
What you're saying is "don't use @." The message that's... [more]

Please don't anthropomorphize language. It's not a sentient being. While it's true that language develops largely due to the unconscious influence of its users, that doesn't mean that those who attempt to consciously influence the development of language are somehow infringing on language's natural rights or otherwise wrong to do so.
Oh, give me a break. Surely you recognize that writing "its going to develop the way it wants to develop" is... [more]

I don't believe that language is some shambling shuggoth-like creature devouring all in its path.
Yeah, but wouldn't it be cool if it were?
On this, I think we also agree 100%.

Because its a virus.

Mediareport: That's missing the point. It's unnecessary noise on the page at an all-text site.
This depends on your definition of noise, I suppose. I just quoted a lengthy section of your post, following accepted convention. This reply would actually have taken up less space without significantly changing the content if I'd done it like this:

I propose that if a posted link proves to be false but it is believed that the discussion is worth keeping that something be done to make it clear in the original post that the link is false.
I propose "WARNING: CRUNCHY FROG."

rumors! innuendo!
I disagree that the presence of comments in the Metafilter thread that debunk the link are actually 100% useful. Indeed, after the first debunked comment was posted, there were still people exhibiting a certainly level of hystrionics regarding deleting their LastFM account.
That said, if its all right for us to post spurious rumors to the front page provided they are debunked within the thread - since that is a "public service" - I suspect that my new... [more]

While I'm thinking about it, I thought this "all police are evil" topic was a nice match for the "all lawyers are evil and I'm glad they're getting fired" topic. I'm looking forward to the "all judges are evil," "all security guards are evil" and "all juries are evil (and stupid)" topics that should appear to party with they were figures in Matisse's The Dance.... All time favorite comment?
I don't know whether I made the sidebar with my dork comment or if I'm just seeing my comment because of some clever coding skills, but either way, I am amped.
That said, tkchrist's footsie story brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.

who was that guy, the one with the plane...?
I missed this the first time around. My dad flew for American before he retired our of LAX and JFK. When I was little (before security was made insane), he used to take me to check his mail, so I got to see the areas that usually only the pilots see. It was great fun and I have many memories of walking through the back passages at those airports. This really made my day!

Why did my question get deleted
What would the world be like now if Schweitzer had never existed?
I got this one covered.
Somebody else would have won the Noble Prize in 1952.

Alvy: I disagree with Joey Michaels; for the most part these types of posts give people here a chance to condemn celebrity culture rubbernecking while at that same time perpetuating it.
That's kind of the magic of it, though. You can't condemn it without perpetuating it. You can't create a Metatalk call out without perpetuating it. Like an Interweb troll, the only way to effectively avoid perpetuating it is to ignore it.... [more]

I propose that taking some time to meditate on the fact that USAian culture is overly focused on celebrity culture is actually an excellent use of the Interweb and Metafilter. I offer 200+ comments on the Hilton jail entry and another 400+ on the Anna Nicole obit as evidence that a certain percentage of folks here agree.
Yes, it also becomes "who can make the nastiest one liner" day, but note that the conversation also does address the fact that our news media... [more]

TeenAsk
I coach high school debate. In the ten years I've been doing this, the majority of teen competitors have been very well informed about world events, exceptionally level headed and very well spoken.
Of course, I've also met a number of teenagers who are well on their way to becoming complete idiots. Until their idiocy is validated by a high school diploma, they will have to settle for being incomplete idiots.
I've also met a fair number of... [more]

The mushroom thing was one of my favorite MeFi things ever. She made herself part of the fun, which is no small feat on the Interweb. I especially loved when she added the "snobbery" tag to the post - one of the funniest MeFi things ever, IMO.
