Is anybody doing anything in Portland before the
big party tomorrow? I've been traveling the western states with my camera looking for interesting sites to see, and I will be driving from Seattle where my parents are to Portland tomorrow. I'm just not sure if it's worth getting to town before 7 or not.

The
thread on copyright was closed to comments after 24 hours. I assume that either there is a bug that made the thread think it was 30 days old, or Matt has decided that all that needed to be said has been said. Either option points to a problem with the system somewhere.

Is it possible to disallow embedded media in trackbacks? Say for instance the song that automatically starts playing when you open
this thread.

What is the best way to establish and enforce community standards on MetaFilter/MetaTalk?

This is a minor bug, but if you go into the
July Archives page, the
Waking Life thread says it has 69 comments. If you click into the thread, the parenthetical reports 68 comments.

I didn't want to derail the Kevin Smith
obit thread from where ever it might be going so... [more inside]

So how about a
Pledge Drive? My local NPR station is begging for money again, and I was thinking - you know I'd rather give my $1/day (why that's not even enough for coffee) to MeFi. Currently the donation kitty is at $3,597. I bet we can get that up to $4,500 in no time. What do you say?

Is MetaFilter down for everybody else. I've been getting host not found errors all morning. I know Matt was planning to
move his name server box. I'm just wondering if something in that process got hosed. If it is down, is it still available via an IP address -> I couldn't seem to find that either.

How do you know when you're a star on the Internet?
Google attempts to
correct the spelling of your name.

About a month ago jpoulos suggested a
MetaFilter book club. Everybody seemed to think it was a great idea. Then, nothing happened with it. Not wanting to see the idea dropped, I went ahead and created a
Yahoo Group. [more...]

It seems lately there have been
a lot of MeTa threads recently discussing things that have already been discussed to a simply ridiculous level of refinement. Is it appropriate to begin encouraging members to search MeTa before posting in the same way people are encouraged to search MeFi?

I was looking at the source in the
Auto-close Open Tags thread, and I noticed that the comment submit box has my user password stored as clear text. It's not like MeTa/MeFi need to be highly secure, but I'm wondering if there is a better way to handle that.

Sometimes, after viewing a thread in MetaTalk, when I hit the back button, the other threads lose the number of new messages since my last visit information. It doesn't seem to happen all the time. (Mac IE5)

In the past day or so, external links are no longer opening in a new window. I'm using IE 5 for the Mac. I've confirmed the preference didn't change.

So would
This be considered a bug or a diabolical feature? I believe that what kchristidis did was copy the source for a previous comment into the top of his comment making it appear as though Meg posted a comment she didn't post. Is it even possible to prevent something like that?

As I keep refreshing a 350+ post thread, I got to thinking about what that does in terms of bandwidth. Would it make sense to break up posts that exceed 50+ posts into multiple sections or would that just discourage people from reading posts that happened earlier in the thread?

Hey Matt - I don't know how easy this would be, but how about a script that looks at links as they're posted and if it recognizes a link to an Amazon product (or any of 100s of others), it would automatically reformat the link with the Give MeFi 15% back if somebody buys this product off this link character string.
Then you could just sit back and rake in all of the subversively gotten gain.
