I c*nt stop saying twat.
I've only read half the thread so far, but just have to put in my two cents before I get back to reading.
I find "cunt" incredibly offensive and never use it, FWIW. However, "cunny"--which doesn't have any of the vitriol or misogyny of cunt imo--has become an injoke between my wife and I. It all started when I told her about a porno mag I found as a boy while I was living in England. It came with a little crappy flexible record insert of a woman... [more]

Yeah, I think my friends were shocked by it because upon hearing it for the first time, they assumed (as I did) that it meant someone who had sex with their own mother, and as far as swear word meanings go, that's about as vulgar and offensive as they can get. It was only later that I found out motherfucker was coined by African-American slaves who used it to refer to someone (usually a slave owner) who has sex with people's mothers, both in the literal sense and also figuratively as a swear... And that last example shows just how seriously such a curse was taken back in the day, where it could reduce the charges from murder to manslaughter or less.

Zat is what we call zee urban legend.
I guess I shouldn't let my guard down just because the source looks and sounds convincing. I think the first time I heard that particular story about the etymology of "motherfucker" was on a program where a distinguished African-American gent (for the life of me I can't remember who it was, it was a looong time ago) matter-of-factly stated that "motherfucker" was coined by and... GiveWell
Hard to believe that "the Village Voice nominated [kamenetz, who wrote the article] for a Pulitzer prize in feature writing..." for a series she wrote a while back. If this article is an example of her present writing, she must be on a downward spiral.
This whole Givewell fiasco reminds me of Sidney Lumet's Q & A, [SPOILER ALERT] in which the assistant district attorney, played by Timothy Hutton, discovers that the DA is an incredibly corrupt person with a... [more]

I enjoy Metafilter when there's a balance between consideration and good will and clever biting snark. When it gets to be too much of a touchy feely hippie lovefest it gets boring, and when there are too many unnecessarily rude malicious comments and axe grinding it almost makes me nauseous.

Enough Ebert
I understand the Ebert love. The man truly loves the art form, and is a good reviewer. He's not a fraud like most other critics who've never been involved in making a film, yet take it upon themselves to opine on filmmakers' craft. And he seems like a genuinely nice guy, both by how he comes across on camera, and peoples' anecdotes who've met him. And I don't know if he still does it now that he's ill, but he used to take HS (or college, don't remember which) students out on movie nights, where... [more]

Those lyrics are great. I'll give him that.
Sail Away or Louisiana 1927 are good starting points. Not everything is funny, though he's got plenty of wry wit in most of his stuff. Think of him as a more laconic Warren Zevon, or a lugubrious Steely Dan (though I don't get Steely Dan love; the clichéd "They're named after a... [more]

We live in a world where 44 year old are attracted to children not for love but FOR exploitation.
Which is the reason I'm annoyed by the term "pedophile", which as we all know means "lover of children", and couldn't be further from the truth. It's one of the most blatant misnomers in the long history of misnomers. It was either Bill Maher or Dennis Miller who said we don't need a 50 cent word to describe these people, and I agree... I've gained more respect for Gen Y as a result of reading Metafilter. Being 41, I don't associate with many twenty somethings, so my impression of them was based on pop culture stuff, and let's face it, they don't come across too well from that source. But the young 'uns on Metafilter are incredibly smart, erudite, cultured, moral and well-read (and great writers too). Holy shit. I've only read up to and including fourcheesemac's outing of princeofpersia as being Armen Asl (and the linked AskMe thread about the ebay scam, which I somehow missed at the time), but this is riveting, not to mention sickening stuff. I take it the authorities never prosecuted what's-his-face, and if ebay did finally terminate him, it wasn't until he'd pulled a million more scams even after being repeatedly notified by several MeFites that the guy was a scammer. Way to go, Armen (and... [more]

Another interesting footnote: "Asl" means "genuine" in Farsi. I've never run across an Iranian with that last name. Particularly one with the first name "Armen", which suggests he's an Armenian-Iranian. It would follow that his real surname would end with "-ian", as does every other Armenian surname I've ever heard. So yeah, I think the "Asl/genuine" bit is Armen's way of being funny, as in "I'm the biggest scammer/liar/crook MeFi has ever... [more]

The thing is, however, you never see mulberries at the supermarket or even green grocer's, so you have to take it upon yourself to raid someone's tree (if you live in the right climate) and pick some yourself.
