Daniel Soar
on the militarisation of metaphor:
Spies aren’t known for their cultural sensitivity. So it was a surprise when news broke last month that IARPA, a US government agency that funds ‘high-risk/high-payoff research’ into areas of interest to the ‘intelligence community’, had put out a call for contributions to its Metaphor Program, a five-year project to discover what a foreign culture’s metaphors can reveal about its beliefs.

The New Aesthetic For a while now, I’ve been collecting images and things that seem to approach a new aesthetic of the future, which sounds more portentous than I mean. What I mean is that we’ve got frustrated with the NASA extropianism space-future, the failure of jetpacks, and we need to see the technologies we actually have with a new wonder.

Jonathan "
King of Hits" King is a former pop impresario now best known for his
conviction and imprisonment for having sex with teenage boys. He has turned his
experiences into a satirical musical,
Vile Pervert [NSFW], and released the film for free online. In one number, adopting the persona of Oscar Wilde, King asserts that
"there's nothing wrong with buggering boys".

Where Are The Joneses? is an
interactive sitcom from
Steve Coogan's
production company. The action centres on Dawn Jones, who, on learning that she is the daughter of a sperm donor, sets out to find her twenty-seven siblings. You can watch
episodes on YouTube, follow a
Flickr photo-diary, and, inevitably, keep up via
Dawn's Twitter account. Don't like the plot, characters or gags? Then rewrite the show

Not In The Newsfilter: Yesterday, two men
attended their pre-trial hearing at Preston Crown Court, accused of possession of explosive material. As previously
reported only in
local newspapers, Robert Cottage was in possession of 'what is believed to be a record haul of chemicals used in making home-made bombs', while a search of former
BNP candidate David Bolus Jackson's house 'uncovered rocket launchers, chemicals... and a nuclear biological suit'. Some
webloggers, and the
left-wing press, are wondering whether the story might have received more coverage if the suspected bomb-makers had been, say, Muslims. The BBC
blame reporting restrictions.

Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres provide
beautiful surroundings in which cancer patients and their families can
learn to adjust to living with the disease. You'd think an organisation called

they believe to be a deeply offensive work),
pretending to be helping them avoid a scandal, while
threatening them with protests outside their centres around the UK.
