Their culture goes to eleven
His last was comically wrong from halftitle page to colophon so this one should be at least as amusing as an old Andy Capp collection.

every sweaty Livejournal-using fanboy who has self-diagnosed themselves with "Asperger's Syndrome" after reading the Wikipedia entry for it once, and likes to talk at length about their "disorder" and how unique and special it makes them.
Yer sweaty fanboys are mistaken. They have Assburgers, not Asperger's.

Asian socities drive like this...
Remember those people in high school, a little above average in intelligence and socially clumsy but outgoing anyway? ... Well, David Brooks has always struck me as one of those guys.
After class I'm shoving Brooks in a locker. Pass it around.

Buzz is forever?
Unless you have read all of the great books of the past and seen all of the great movies several times and heard all of the great recordings, you don't have to choose something from the current bestseller lists.
How many old books or movies must I read before I can read a new one? How old must they be and how new is the "new" allowed to be?
David Brooks should join Adbusters; he'd be right at home.

Hickory stick for the poseurs, birch branch for the anti-poseur poseurs, baseball bat for David Brooks.

Black Confederates
Every morning Aunt Jemima made pancakes for the Confederate Army and every night Uncle Ben served them rice. Every Friday they went to Sambo's.

Right, I'll go off and, I don't know, read some Keats.
Keats and Byron were sort of the Kardashian/Hilton pair of 19th century British romantic poets, you know.

Hipster - The End of Wester Civilization
The modern iteration of hipsterism
There isn't any "modern iteration of hipsterism." There's just a collection of styles, fashions, and trends that some people have decided to call "hipsterism" either because they want the cultural capital--the plaisir, shall we say--that they believe is associated with those styles or because they want the cultural capital they believe is associated with distancing themselves... Folk of the fringe is only one of Card's books I've ever read and I've never had the urge to read any more of them, but it wasn't bad if you like (Mormon) apocalyptic fiction. And as a bonus, there's a hot, kinda S&M-y scene near the end where an older mestizo woman has wild, bestial, sex with a young, self-loathing, puritanical, American Mormon guy (in order to conceive a child who will grow up to save Norteamérica after the cracker-ass Whiteys screw everything up).... Judges taking minority views and turning them into laws that the majority does not want is a threat to democracy. NOT Gays are a threat to democracy. Personally I agree with this statement. This is pretty much saying one man can make a law that everyone has to live with regardless of how they feel or voted. There is a form of government that does just this.... communism.

Because objectively speaking, Thomas did kill Alexandersson.
Among those of us who actually socialize with other humans and are sensitive to the connotations as well as the denotations of English words, we might say, at most, "Thomas was indirectly responsible for Alexandersson's death."
(We also don't write "cuz" for "because" once we're past the age of 12 or so.)

Why can't you?
As most of the people in this thread have already pointed out to you, the English language distinguishes in definition, theory, and law between someone who "kills" intentionally or negligently and who therefore deserves to be held accountable for the results of those actions and someone who's actions accidentally or indirectly result in a death which they are neither morally or legally culpable for. Grown-ups don't really find... [more]

I remember this show was actually really scandalous when it came out.
The Taco Bell Mug Root Beer Dana Carvey Show was one of--maybe the--greatest gag ever played on TV execs. During the first show I and a friend looked at each other at the same time and said "There's no way this will ever last a season."
