You good!
The colloquial greeting in South Africa is "Howzit" which is a shortened "How is it?".

Smoking Gun
I would also suggest transferring the cigarettes from the pack/boxes they originally came in into a small cigarette case.

Wii workout!
Wii Fit. Don't think it's been released outside of Japan yet but it's selling like gangbusters.

[englandfilter] what's so cool about cricket?
Get into T20/Pro20 first. It's a short game where each side bats for 20 overs. Over in about 3 hours, lots of action, lots of 'slogging' (reckless hitting)
The get into one day matches and one day tests. This is a 50 over per side match and takes about 6 hours to play. Still fast paced but with a bit tactics thrown in.
3 day games are usually only played at the county level and are a precuror to....
The 5 day... [more]

Help a heathen design a groom's glass bag for a Jewish wedding.
I just used a bag the Rabbi provided. Looking at my pictures it was plain old cheapy looking red velvet.
Also, please use a wine glass or light bulb. Do not use a thick bottomed glass like a whiskey tumbler, which can result in the groom only breaking the glass on the 6th attempt.

Forgotten PIcture
I know this picture exactly. I saw a similar one in an old Time-Life book on Japan (it was a series of books each focusing on a country) that belonged to my dad (I think he got it from his dad so it could be quite old). Xere is correct that it's a ceremony where an entire roomful of Japanese guys in loincloths scramble after scrolls (although I recall the accompanying text saying it was just some sticks but I could be wrong) throw in amongst them.

Local living in South Africa
I live in Cape Town so I can't answer the Pretoria specific questions but here goes:
C) If you use international roaming and you're out of SA and people call your number you will be charged the difference between the cellphone and international rates. MTN is probably the company you want to talk to as they have a much larger Africa network than Vodacom.
D) Dealerships and car hire places (Avis, Tempest, Super-Rent) are probably your best bet. Car... [more]

Windows 2000 box reboots on dial up
That might be it but the computer doesn't reboot 60 seconds after connecting to the internet, it does so immediately (right after the password is sent and I assume the PPP connection is up). I'll definitely investigate this though.

stovenator: Thanks for the links. I tried LSPFix before but it didn't seem to help. It's not specifically an IE thing as it happens when I use Firefox as well. The dial-up dialog comes up normally, dials in, sends username and password and then immediately reboots. Sometimes it will reboot into a BSOD other times it won't.

My friend's brother was told by Ozzie customs to put his wooden African statues in the freezer for three months in order to kill an insects hiding out in the wood.
