deleted militarization thread
Which is weird since FFF is Canadian.
Not so weird. FFF is pretty loudly anti-US (not that it bothers me), so posting bad news about the States doesn't seem that out of character.

Queuing questions.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula doesn’t share a border with Canada due to the small matter of—oh, I don’t know—Lake fucking Superior. It’s okay, it’s only the largest of the Great Lakes. Anyone could miss it.
No, no, that part's fine. The UP does: at Sault Sainte Marie.

The bible does condemn homosexuality and non-believers, doesn't it?
Ooh, I'd like to take a stab at that one too. Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, came in to settle a dispute. The parties involved said to mind his own business, they demanded to be judged by the Quran alone. Ali said, 'Ok then' and sat everybody in a circle and placed the open Quran in the middle. After some awkward fidgeting on the part of the disputants, the answer... [more]

White people on Metafilter
Scarabic has by far the best comment on the situation. What makes the site effective and uncomfortable is that it is daring to speak about white people as a group that can be studied and commented upon, whereas it is the single largest privilege of white privilege that we get to be normal or generic americans not reducible to race while everybody else is a distinct subset of that. What it means to be white is invisible to most white people, and that is what the site is drawing attention to.... [more]

Thanks for the links, AV. I've been doodling around on this subject and thought I'd share some of the stuff I've found.

aspo - Not all mainstream culture is by white
Yeah, I tend to agree actually. Mainstream culture is American culture and it can belong to everybody and everybody can have a part of it. Nonetheless it tends to privilege white skinned people. Still, I think it is a possibility that there could be somethiing called white culture that is discrete from American culture as a whole, specific to white skin people, not dealing with skin privilege or its effects, and... Sorry, indeed, but what strange, elaborate spam.
Oh are we doing sardarji jokes now, Meatbomb? So this sardarji walks into a sweets shop and can't make up his mind what to order. He says to the shopkeeper, "Give me 50 grams of barfi. And 50 grams of jelabis. And 50 grams of the ladhus, and 50 of the rasgullahs, and..." And he continues on until a small mountain of delicious sweets are before him. "Is that all?" says the weary shopkeeper.
"Yes, now mash that all up and give... [more]

I'd meet y'all in Kuching, if you're serious about a Malaysian venue, though I imagine turnout would be better in KL.

Etienne, could you please tell this confused American what country I would need to be from to find Ori's behavior acceptable?

Among other things, if I were judging the behavior of someone from a different country, I'd try to be a little circumspect. After all, there might be things about the culture you don't know.
Although etienne was doing his best to pass for a 13 year old, I have unmasked his ruse. He is in fact Bernard-Henri Levy.
