Taming the oak monster.
Indeed, I'd also like a confirmation that Gary bought Cork'd, which I love. To me, Cork'd is to CellarTracker as Basecamp is to MS Office Project -- It's (currently) all about The Long Tail and accessibility.
Disclaimer: I was the designer for WinePriceX, a good idea that was mismanaged into irrelevance, much to my dismay.... [more]

Takeshi Terauchi and The Bunnys do Beethoven
Most definitely. I kinda expected Flight of the Bumblebee to be totally killer, but it ain't, IMO. I totally dug Hungarian Dance though, as it was one of my favourite pieces I played on the piano when I was a wee lad. Good post!

The decline of manual transmission cars
As caddis mentions, it's a question of control/performance vs convenience. I can certainly understand the convenience; driving to work eating an Egg McMuffin, driving while getting head -- not that I'm condoning it -- driving while smacking the kids in the back seat telling them to shut up. I drive a manual and always have, but I won't deny the fact that sometimes I wish I had an automatic. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
But I'm all about manual 'cause I... [more]

Ever wanted to ask the guy next to you on the bus to shut up?
I'm practically a CBC (Canadian-Born Chinese) from Hong Kong and I often find myself living between both Western and Chinese culture. This thread is somehow utterly fascinating though, because of how much you guys have read into the culture. Suffice to say, MeFites rule.
On a side note, I'm looking forward to showing this to my dad tonight. He worked as a double-decker bus driver for a bit before immigrating to Canada in '76. I'm pretty sure that he's gonna scoff at... [more]

Blame, bane or the way of the future? Micropayment stock photography
I think liquatious hit the nail on the head right there.
I feel that both sides of this fence are probably missing something important: This sort of thing is only a mild symptom of the rapidly vanishing gap between media producer and media consumer. It's not a new "problem" at all.
There's a growing army of davids out there and sites like istockphoto and Lucky Oliver are doing what good businesses do best: Adapting... [more]

Ah bollocks, practically a repost :P. Sorry guys!
I've often wondered where my parents and grandma would be if the hadn't come to Montreal. After this photo series, I'm not really in the mood to contemplate any further...

As sotalia pointed out (well, the link), I don't think there are any windows in most of these appartments. There's even this one pic where this guys looks like he's living in some mine shaft or something. I can only guess that the washrooms are communal, although some of these pics show people with extremely modest kitchen areas.

Actually, sourwookie, I'm more concerned with the quality of the air in those rooms. They look like they're made for sick building syndrome!

Hustler, the SFW kind
There is somewhat of a revival in my neck of the woods (Montreal, Canada) with a local franchise catouring to the clubbing generation. The franchise has been experiencing some tremendous growth for the last 10 years. They're located in the suburbs and they've combined the pool hall with the sports bar. Consequently, I think they've stumbled upon the 18-30 demographic goldmine. It's really one of the only fun places to drink for these 18-year-old surburbanites.... [more]

I just realized that one of pool's problem is that it's not the most affordable "cool" activity out there in the sense that most people don't have the space for a pool table, nor can they afford one. Texas hold'em, on the other hand... all you need is a pack of cards and chips can be replaced with anything, from loose change to oreo cookies.

Funny... I'm a CBC (Canadian Born Chinese) and as a general rule, I didn't date Asian women 'cause they tend to be spoiled and high-maintenance rice queens -- at least in my personal experience. What's even funnier is that I'm now dating a fellow CBC who doesn't live up to my stereotype. Heh, go figure ;).

Dorifto!
Here are some drifting techniques and other driving tips. Be sure to lookup "drifting" on Kazaa or whatever P2P thingie you're using. InitialD is alright, but like most anime series, it suffers from a great deal of senseless drama (less talkie, more driftie!). If you're very keen, you can check out Shuot Kousoku Trial. As for videogames, Need For Speed Underground is definitely the game to play if you're a heavyweight (the last level is killer). For lightweights, check out Burnout... [more]

Will French surrender to English?
I'm glad to see mentions of Québec in this thread... As an Asian anglophone who grew up in Québec, I'm fluent in three languages with English being my preferred language. I personally couldn't give a damn about language purity as long as people understand each other. For instance, I work in a French environment where I can speak in English while others speak in French, and because everybody still understands each other, everybody gets along. Preservation of language/culture may be great, but... [more]

Dinosaur says what?
These guys are totally out of touch with reality. More and more of us have associated song names to their CD track numbers... which is proof positive that we sometimes prefer only a coupla songs within any given album. If distributors can't dictate the way artists sell their music, why should artists dictate the way we listen to their music?

That's true, t.f.y.l.m. The add a coupla Pink Floyd albums in there too. Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Good albums are still possible. Artists will have to get their priorities straight. Rock'n'roll, and then sex and drugs.

Liberate us
Surely WalMart (and the fundamentalists behind it) can censor the products it carries. It sucks, but it's well within legal limits. But when you look at the big picture, WalMart is a global force, controlling many facets of the American (and global) life. There's no problem with cencorship on a tiny scale, but when it's supersized into a WalMart sized web of control, things could get kinda scary in an Orwellian way.
