Is there really such a thing as "foreign oil"?

Why is there so much talk about dependence on "foreign oil"? (Meaning, as opposed to "domestic oil," not alternative energy sources.) Is there really any meaningful distinction between foreign and US oil, given that the oil market is mostly global?

where do my viruses come from?

When AVG antivirus finds a virus, it tells me where it is and the filename. Is there any way to find out where it came from? I'm showing a handful of trojans and exploits over the past six months and I'm curious.

how hard is it to install replacement windows?

I'm moderately handy. Is installing a replacement window something I can do? Or should I leave it to the pros?

throwaway phone number?

Is there a service that will give me a "throwaway" phone number in another US area code (of my choice) that will ring on a second (US) phone number I specify? Looking for a solution that's dead simple, and free or very cheap.

Can firefox mimic the Windows integration of IE?

If throw an address like c:\my documents into an IE address bar, it opens up the folder in windows explorer. If I put the same thing in a firefox address bar, I get an html page that displays the folder/files as a series of links down the page. Anyway to get firefox to replicate the IE behavior on this type of address?

Songs about Occupations

What are some songs where the narrator's occupation is the focus of the song? For instance, "Customer" by Raheem DeVaughn, where the lovin' comes with fries, or "Garbage Man" by Ike Turner (thanks Miss Lynnster), where the lovin' is expressed through gifts of garbage.

Is the IRS mad at me?

Good news! Going through some old paperwork I just found a check for $2,600 that I'd never cashed from 2003. Bad news! It was a rollover distribution from a 401K at Fidelity, made out to E-trade. Fidelity says they did file a 1099 in the year they cut the check. Am I screwed for the back taxes, plus penalties?

Can I make my own GPS based audiotour?

I like the idea of "tour" audio that's loaded into my GPS unit, and as I drive through, say, Virginia, a voice tells me about Civil War battles and troop movements that took place in my immediate area. Here's one vendor that makes these. Question is -- how hard would it be to make my own? What technical expertise/hardware/software would be required?

Cacheing the presidential cache

I know that if a President (U.S.) were to send/receive emails, that those would be considered government documents, subject to retention policies, archiving/disclosure, etc. What about all the other online stuff?

Auctioneer tips & tricks?

I volunteered to be an auctioneer for a charity event. All I know is that I have to acknowledge people's bids and try to nudge people higher, while talking really, really fast. What else should I know?

Whistle -- now, what melody is that?

I have long contended that when people randomly whistle a tune, walking down the street or whatever, 9 times out of 10 they will be whistling a certain melody. I have no basis for this contention other than gut suspicion. My wife scoffs.

Treehouse construction advice? (photos, video)

Another treehouse question. I'm almost done building mine, and I can't figure out why it's so wobbly. Take a look at photos & video, please, and let me know what I might do to make it more solid. No treehouse experience necessary, this is mostly carpentry 101. Degree of difficulty: I do not want any posts in the ground supporting the treehouse. I want all the support to be in the tree.

Auto tagging MP3s based on a textfile

MP3 tagging: I have hundreds and hundreds of songs tagged with the title like this: Stairway_To_Heaven. In a Word file, fixing this is trivial, and I could save that to a txt file. Is there tagging software that will rename by pulling from a text file? Windows only, please.

ad hoc address groups in gmail?

Gmail question, here's the scenario: I want to forward an email to an ad hoc list of people (meaning, not a group I've forwarded to before, or am likely to again). I open the email, I hit reply, and on the To: line, I click....what?

Studio logo openings?

Help me repair a bent pin in a CF slot?

Please help me save my digital camera. Inside the compact flash card slot, I have a bent pin. I can see it, but I can't think of anything small enough, yet rigid enough, that I could get in there that could straighten it out.

forgotten WWII movie

Recognize this movie? Somebody asked the Onion's AV Club about it and they (I think) got it wrong -- and it's a movie that's been bugging me for some time also. Can AskMe get it right? Details inside include a crashed WWII bomber in the desert and spooky ghost crew members.

Urban vs. suburban customer experience

When I go to a Wal-Mart or a Home Depot in an urban location (aka, lots of black customers) and then I go to suburban locations of these stores, I've notice that in the urban areas, the lines are longer, there are fewer staff to help, the store is generally a bit shabbier, and the employess seem to be less-well trained and held to lower standards regarding how they treat their customers.

A round on the house

I was in a bar the other night and the bartender passed out a poker chip to everybody in the house, which was, I found out, how the bartender or bar owner buys a round for everybody. I never saw this before. How widespread is this tradition (a round on the house via passing out a token to everybody?)

How to preserve paintings on plaster walls?

The third floor of my neighbor's home was made into a children's playroom many years ago and hasn't been touched since. There's very interesting (and possibly offensive) handpainted artwork on the (plaster) walls he would like to preserve, but hasn't a clue how to do it or who to talk to for advice. How should he proceed?

Blooperstown

Bruce Sutter's Hall of Fame plaque notes that he ..."lead the league in saves five times." Is this a typo? Or this one of those things that can go either way? ("led" or "lead" for the past tense of "lead")

recovering from file overwrite

Most PC mistakes are undoable -- I can undelete deleted files pretty reliably, and many applications have some kind of undo function. The one thing it seems I can't undo is accidentally saving one file on top of another.
