Every now and again there's an etymology question on AskMe, and lately they inevitably feature the beloved languagehat
popping in to
warn people that speculation is pointless and that the only valid answers are to be found in reference books. (not bookist)

Just wanted to call attention to an AskMe that really takes you on a roller-coaster ride -- opening with
sadness, stopping off at
beauty, providing lots of
warm fuzzies throughout, stopping off for a surprising dollop of
disgust on the way to inexplicable
hilarity (ymmv), and ending up being a great reference point for anybody in a relationship.

I asked for the headspace post on the writer's strike to be posted to the sidebar. BUT I DIDN'T ASK FOR IT TO BE POSTED TWICE GODDAMNIT!!!

How was the AskMe about "your favorite frugalities" chatfilter? Seemed like a legitimate
question to me with some decent, interesting answers. Bad deletion.

I think the sidebar in AskMe as currently constituted is a big fat waste of real estate.

I'm vaguely interested in the Ralph Wiggum thread but at 350+ comments I'm afraid to enter. Please summarize the general drift of it, including excerpts and/or links to any particularly entertaining portions. Thank you.

cortex notes in passing something about the "admin console." Jessamyn drops a dark reference to the "admin-facing flags" interface. Come on MeFi elite admin caste! Let's see screenshots! Feel free to lie if the truth is not interesting.

To know that people will post
questions like this, and that other people -- strangers -- will help as they have...I hope Matt still is able to steal a few minutes now and then to take some pride in what he's created.

Don't get me wrong -- I want to know how stuff on AskMe turns out. I don't think MeTa is the ideal place for that, though. What about allowing askers to post a followup in their own threads, even if they'd been closed & archived, which would put that thread on a new page, like the "fantastic posts" page we have now, which could be called "resolutions" or "how'd it turn out" or some such.

Why did C17H19NO3's AskMe update of his prom question get deleted? I can see there's 14 responses, but clicking through I get the "move along" stuff.

We know who posts the most, who comments the most, etc. Do we know who the most helpful users of AskMe are (as expressed by the ratio [questions/answers])?

Sorry if this has been covered, but will we have the chance to go back to our old AskMe posts and not only tag them (as is currently possible) but also put them in the correct category, as as currently not possible? And is there any volunteer effort being organized to go through and tag (and/or categorize) old posts that have not been tagged by their creators?

Matt's clearly not being compensated adequately for the time and $$ he spends on this place, and the avenues open to him are apparently distasteful to many of us. As fun as it is to complain about SG, it might be even more fun coming up with a way to replace the SG revenue ourselves. -->

There was an AskMe thread today about essential software to take on tech support calls to loved ones' computers over the holidays. It got deleted, I assume because the question's been asked and answered a couple of times. (+)

"...
you get more reactions by being obscure." Newish Mefites: An FPP that leads to an interesting discussion is like catching a foul ball at a baseball game...it's a nice outcome, it will probably be one of the things you remember about the game, and you might even want to bring a glove to improve your odds, but it shouldn't be the main reason you come to the park.

There are a couple of threads going in AskMe dealing with 'net addiction workarounds...Can they be combined into a single thread? Because
I can't stop clicking back and forth between them!

So there's roughly 8,000 questions now in AskMe (# of June questions x 11 months).... May I humbly request an update on the tagging project, or any other ponies that could help make this the great resource it's screaming to be? And has any more thought been given to how metadata could be added to the questions already in the db?

Not that there's a lot of State Department material around these parts, to be diplomatic about it, but croutonsupafreak has
posted an exemplary answer to an AskMe query on how to join the U.S. Foreign Service. Check it out: he just keeps giving and giving.

So I'm putting around in my car about a half hour ago, listening to KYW newsradio in Philly, and a "Washington bureau" correspondent starts talking about how Tivo users can now share their shows. Cool, I'm thinking, some pretty mainstream exposure for TiVo. Then the reporter cuts to "
industry observer mathowie"...

What are some good community sites, other than AskMetafilter, where people can intiate discussions on
topics like this one? It's a good question in a bad place, IMO.

Does anybody know how to make
bookmarklets? (Also
here.) I have an idea for a great one for Metafilter users.
I, like many, use lo-fi me-fi almost exclusively. It's easier on the server, it's easier on my eyes, and it's not so obviously "not work." But when I want to post a comment, in lo-fi, I have to go up to the URL bar and delete the string "comments_deleted." from the URL and click Enter to bring up the comment window. A bookmarklet that did this would allow me to bring up that comment window with a single click to the links toolbar (IE6) -- and
perhaps strip out the color at the same time? Anyone?
