MeTa post: We'll build our house and chop our wood
I am in favor of this. I wonder, however, if it's something that should be taken off site in the manner of sportsfilter, metachat, and travelfilter.

Did I do that? Ooohhhh, snap! Seriously though, what does it cost to host either of these sites?

MeTa post: Thread pagination +500 comments
Ajax thread viewer. Whip up a simple paginated view that takes an offset and a number and returns the posts in HTML or even JSON. Writing javascript to smooth-scroll and load on demand given that would take a competent javascript programmer a day

Please don't do this. It breaks things like scroll wheels and space bar paging. Besides, you know who else did that?

Actually, they've since fixed it a bit, but when Live... [more]

Marxchivist, I removed you as a contact to take you back to thirteen, but that left you with fourteen contacts. I am sad on account of I wanted to involve you and jonmc in some sort of gift of the magi like contact adding and removing scheme but, as so often happens, my romantic notions ran afoul of cruel reality.

Stupid reality.

MeTa post: One is feets, the other is boots?
The London Mayor Thread is one of my favorite threads. It was great because I learned a shitload ablout local London politics by eavesdropping on a conversation that I never would have heard otherwise. Local posts can be great if they're, you know, great posts.

Fuck. Good luck Ms. Macefield, whereever you are. Seattle is better for the likes of you.

And if someone wants to put their money where my mouth is, I'm happy to donate if I don't get laid off on thursday. Tearing the house down and erecting either an enormous middle finger or a community garden would suit.

MeTa post: Oh shit, it's a walk-off!
A is prettier and seems easier to read but there'll be scaling issues if certain letters get gobs more tags. B makes it faster to page down to the letter I'm looking for and scan to find a tag. I will not, however, be satisfied until it's standards compliant.
posted to MetaTalk by stet at 4:18 PM on June 17, 2008
I fail at the internets. I was going to link to the ISO standard for controlled vocabularies and imply that the tags should be replaced by trained indexers but I didn't preview and I'm very sorry and I'll never to it again.

MeTa post: Asked for X, got Y (where X equals help and Y equals grief)
When I was a child, I asked for blocks. Instead, my mother provided me with a reciprocating saw and some hardwood scraps. The gift of creativity and self-reliance was something she couldn't have purchased in any store. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give a child is the chance to make something with their own hand and the strength to stand on their own foot.
posted to MetaTalk by stet at 5:18 PM on June 3, 2008
davejay: Clearly a reciprocating saw is inappropriate for a two-year-old. They lack the strength and motor skills to use a handheld reciprocating saw. Two-year-olds should be limited to table saws, TIG welders, and portable sawmills. What kind of parent would let a toddler loose with a SawZall? That's absurd.... [more]

Bastards! Y'all done called a meetup when I'm in Reno-fucking-Nevada! And on my birthday!

Worst birthday since the one where my friends presented me with a formatted list of every grammatical error and bad joke I'd made in public for the last six years.

MeTa post: The Sun Is Here Seattle, Let's Have A Meetup!
Hey fuzzbean, shoot me a MeFail if you'd like some graduates' perspectives on the iSchool. I've got friends, co-workers, and spouses that attended, are attending, or are teaching at the iSchool and, being a librarian, I have a deep-seated need to connect people with information.

I'd like to make the meetup, but schedules are complicated.

Oh yeah, when I was there, there was a strong undercurrent of poutine at the iSchool. iPoutine they called it.

Where I said "stet," it should read "stat." Thanks to a helpful MeFite for pointing out my error. I meant to emphasize: right away.

I am greatly relieved to here that.

MeTa post: Boooooooooobs.
I realize that nobody gives a shit about a low-volume poster like myself, but I spent a good long time staring at the close account page last night and ended up not closing my account so I could read without the ads and using the plain theme. Also so I could post this apparently. Wonder how many people have fucked off without anyone noticing.

For the individual level, my preferred taxonomy is "showing some goddamned restraint, for christ's sake"...

Goddamnit cortex! Do NOT misuse that word. If you do it again I'm going to drag a half-dozen cranky metafiltroons with taxonomist on their business cards down to portland and force you to sit through a live reading of Svenonious.

MeTa post: You're ignorant
If there's interest in library science/classification theory I'd be happy to share some of the teaching load. I don't have the knowledge/motivation to shoulder the entire load but I know there's enough knowlegable people on metafilter (hildago, I'm looking at you!) to make it work.

Plus, library science tends to have enough relevance to the Web that the web-ish metafiltroons could get a lot of value from it.

There were hardly any geologists on wagon trains.

That's not true. Following the precedent set by Lewis and Clark each official wagon train (as certified by the Bureau of Western Expansion) was require to have a geologist, a buffalo hunter, and a chaplain before being allowed to proceed west of St. Louis. The role of scientific staff on wagon trains is greatly underappreciated outside of certain historical circles focused on the American frontier. The

MeTa post: new ajaxy flagging in metatalk
While I'd rather post jokes, I should mention that when I flagged the post, my cursor got trapped in the new div. This is frustrating because I page down using the space bar and, not having my cursor in the main page, I was unable to do so.

The workaround is to hit 'tab' once, which shifts focus to the main page.

This is not a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it.
