Wow - this was way funnier than I imagined. Come on, Metafilter - does anybody remember laughter?
No, wait - the sticks are still waaaaaay too deep up all your asses.

Radiohead's House of Cards video
Technology aside, it's just a very cool video and a gorgeous song.

I just listened to the first two songs on your list, and they seem surprisingly similar to each other: similar tempos, similar sonorities, similar mostly minor-key melodies, similar overcompressed production, similar slight flavour of Indian influence, similar singing style, even a similar length.
You've really studied music for 40 years???

Spoiler Alert.
I am dying to see this. Lady in the Water has provided my lady and I countless hours of mockingly mocking fun - it can't be worse than that, can it??? Man, LITW was so horribly conceived and executed, so pretentious, SO horribly acted, and just so motherfuckingly lame-ass stupid (M. Night, I understand what you were trying to do, you just did it badly and it was a stupid idea anyway), that it actually became, for us, a thing of beauty.
If only I didn't have to... [more]

Because of my fascination with Lady in the Water's wretchedness, I couldn't stop myself from picking up The Man Who Heard Voices after spotting it in the bargain bin at Borders. It's an unbelievably fawning, sycophantic account of the turbulent making of that piece of shit movie. The book is as unintentionally hilarious as the movie.

There's a moment in Lady in the Water where I really can't tell if it's supposed to be funny or not - it's in the beginning, when he's carrying the girl inside, and she sees the stupid grass-dog and starts screaming, and then Paul Giamatti starts screaming and he runs inside with her. It's a moment that is handled with such obscene awkwardness, and it's so goofy/dorky/funny that I can't tell if M. Night is actually being serious. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
By the way, this... [more]

An hour with "the happiest man alive"
This is the first time I've seen the actual Henry Miller - my absolute favorite writer, period - in motion. I can't tell you how happy this made me. Thank you so much.

Pretty much everywhere, it's gonna be hot.
I encountered this last night, laughed my ass off, and then went about my merry way. A few hours later, I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep, thought of it again, and started laughing hysterically. My girlfriend was not amused.

Chicken hypnotism
I learned how to hypnotize chickens from Werner Herzog's awesome commentary track (featuring Crispin Glover) on the "Even Dwarves Started Small" DVD. Chickens frighten him because they are so stupid.

I grew up taking piano lessons via the Suzuki Method. Learning by listening, matched with a lack of discipline on my part, left me a mediocre musician but an obsessive fan of music.

Would John Rocker be their poster-boy?
Man. Once, at about 6AM in Newark's horrible airport, I was faced with using a stall - something I avoid at all costs. As I was carefully affixing a second toilet seat cover, the autoflush went off, spraying my lips with toilet water!
I forgot all about the duties at hand, ran to the sinks, and had to try two different auto faucets before I could get one to work. Then I spent the next five minutes washing my face and lips.

A modern-day warrior mean mean stride, today's tom sawyer mean mean pride
I always wondered whether my high school Rush-fan experience was a common thing - the hardcore fans were a particular kind of dork. An arrogant, especially uncool kind of dork - on the cusp of dorkdom, totally arrogant and defensive. I remember someone saying "I can't stand people who just listen to Chronicles and think they know something about Rush. Idiots."
A few weeks ago I was out running, listening to the local college radio station (a polytechnic institute, natch),... [more]

It's true! I hate on Rush, but it's a hate borne of love for shit like "Lakeside Park" and "Closer to the Heart."
And I also have a hard time even thinking about Rush without being reminded of that Pavement lyric. And what about the voice of Geddy Lee?

Sigur Rós interview goes badly, very, very badly.
I've given Sigur Ros way to many chances - I just find them to be utterly unlistenable, on record anyway. I kind of liked that album with the alien fetus on the cover, but everything else I find strangely unbearable. But same thing with TV on the Radio - people who like them REALLY like them. I just don't get it, but I do get REALLY liking a band, so good on you, fans! (Unless you're talking about the Decemberists - I look forward to everyone denying ever having liked... [more]

"We gave our final concert, The Band's final concert. We called it The Last Waltz."
I still love The Last Waltz, but I love it a bit less after having read Levon Helm's autobiography (and, I guess, Peter Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls), in which he basically describes the whole thing as Robbie Robertson's failed attempt to break into the world of acting.
The 4-disc box set featuring a bunch of outtakes is pretty interesting, especially the tentative but ultimately soulful take on Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light.

Shit, but it must be said, though, that although the way you render your musical opinions annoys the shit out of me, your opinions are impassioned, and on your own terms, informed. But don't you sometimes feel like you're interpreting the fun out of your music? What I love about the music I love is that it's impossible to articulate what it does to me. That's why it's music.

"They're not quite the same 'hit points' you're used to."
Actually, that was, like, half-funny, vronsky.
And really, I'm only reminded of it when I read casual, off-hand comments like yours, PeterMcDermott. And yeah, if I take it to task, I'm overly sensitive about it. And if I don't, it just slips by and nobody blinks an eye.
It's just a weird double standard in Metafilter - people are usually so sensitive about mutual respect, especially with regard to, say, body type and size issues. Just something to be aware of next time... [more]
