Give a code monkey a ruler...
Just off the top of my head...
-organize your files in sections (eg: #includes first, then preprocessor statements, then typedefs, then constructors, then member functions (in the same order as in the .h file) and so on...)
-be consistent with indentation
-be consistent with braces and parenthesis
-be consistent with whitespace including before and after ( and )
-have a good variable naming convention
-no magic... [more]

Brute Force White List Determination
Well, if by brute force you mean that it would exhaustively test every possible domain name, you might want to ask yourself if that's the sort of program you want to be running at work.

Keep up with the cleaning, even if you find yourself putting in a little extra effort. Being seen doing things like cleaning out the fridge thoroughly, mopping, washing the windows can contribute to a more responsible feeling among your flatmates, but not always.
Don't set a precedent by asking permission to do normal things like having friends over.

How can I be calm when someone around me is angry?
If she assumes the right to yell in your presence, you should know you have the right to just get up and leave or silently hang up. It's not healthy to be around those kinds of emotions unnecessarily.
When she asks you what the hell that was all about, tell her that you also have ways to deal with situations you don't enjoy, and that you just put them to use.

Van drop-off for small move in Canada
U-Haul does it but they're pretty bad to deal with. The date they say you'll get your truck doesn't often resemble the date you actually get it. Nor does the place you chose to pick it up at.

I almost put this question in pets & animals.
The hanger steak is one of the best cuts on the cow, but any butcher that you smile at and whose kids you ask after will be glad to special order it for you. My butcher even butterflies and deveins it for me. The best part is that it's cheap: $6 CAD/lb. It's perfect for tartare.

Will my passport keep me from passing ports?
All of the page 3 information is just fine. The laminate is intact, the picture is untouched, the barcode is full and complete, as is all the personal information. There are just a few blue blooms near the edge of the page. Page 1 and 2 have some blue stains but none of the writing has been smeared away completely. Wrinkling is minimal yet noticeable.
It looks like exactly what happened: it was on my nightstand and I spilled water on it.

What're the academic options open to a food obsessed person?
I went to work in a kitchen for free for a month or so when I had some spare time. The pay was non-existent so there was nothing to complain about. The hours were of my choosing. The glory was whatever I invented for myself as I walked home.
I ended up loving it. I can't imagine any other line of work for myself right now.

For the love of chocolate or money...
The chocolate shop job certainly sounds a lot healthier. The smoking in the restaurant would probably drain quite a bit of your energy, as would the commute. All those negatives for a slight pay increase, as you say?

How often do you replace your nonstick pans?
Just get cast iron pans, the original non-stick.
You don't use soap, just wipe them down while they're still warm and rinse them out with water. You can give them to your kids. Overheating? Never heard of it. Stovetop right into the oven? Sure.

Can my female roommate sublet to a guy without my approval?
These situations never work out that well. She's trying to get rid of one problem by giving you another one. On the other hand, if you were out looking for a roommate for those months, you'd have a hassle on your hands, a lot of work to help her skip out a few months early on the lease.
Just say no, you don't want to live with a person you don't know, and see what happens. Or, tell the building manager you don't want to live with a stranger, and see if that influences... [more]

Doesn't seem like there would be any reason not to.
Only if the landlord was a monster. I personally wouldn't want to leave her financially tethered to this guy just to hedge my bets a little. It's always worth giving the landlord a call.

It's just a matter of what you know and like.
Personally, I like to listen to records that rank at about an 8.5. If I break out the favorites then I just sit there with goosebumps all day. If I listen to new stuff, I get distracted.
The real key is good headphones. If you have that, they'll block out the noise, and you don't have to crank them to deafening levels.

There's an option that let's you "Save the burn folder as..." It's the burn folder, full of aliases to the original. The option is presented as a checkbox on the burn dialog.
If you didn't do that, I don't think you can get it back.

Atheist strategy and ethics
The thing that really struck me about Dawkins was when he asked the rabbi if he realized how ridiculous he sounded, and then the crestfallen look on the rabbi's face.
Now, here is a guy who probably could never bring himself to believe anything other than what he believes, so Dawkins is basically, in asking him to admit that he might sound ridiculous, calling him ridiculous. Now, I have no problem with calling religious beliefs ridiculous, but I do find his tactics to be... [more]

Detained on a plane?
I wondered about this, too, on a short flight I took at Christmas. They had to "reboot" (their words) the plane a few times, which put us in darkness for ten minutes each time , and then a random engine repair, and then they had to de-ice the wings.
Of course, this put us pretty far back in the take-off lineup, so it added about two hours. Two hours wasn't that big of a deal to me since it was already late in the evening.
But what if?... [more]

So I talked to my friends about my scenario, and they said you probably wouldn't be let off unless you created a stir among the passengers, in which case the full weight of the law would probably come down on you.
For the person upthread who said you wouldn't get a refund, that's interesting. I kind of see the plane-ticket as a contract. I pay 400 dollars or whatever and you provide me with a seat on a plane that'll arrive where we agreed at the time we agreed on. If you... [more]

Does perfect absolute pitch spoil a listener for imperfect music?
From wiki: absolute ptich
Potential problems
Persons who have absolute pitch may feel irritated when a piece is transposed to a different key or played at a nonstandard pitch.[30] They may fail to develop strong relative pitch when following standard curricula, despite the fact that maintaining absolute strategies can make simple relative tasks more difficult. Inadequately trained absolute pitch possessors can find it quite difficult to play in... [more]

Help me walk away from political arguments with relatives.
I had to deal with a guy like that twice, two nights a week apart. I spent a lot of time fuming after the first night, and then a week later he started in on us again. Most of his views were of an anti-socialist type bend, so when he get up in our grills, unwarranted, I said, "You're so right. In fact, today, we kicked some homeless people!" and my girlfriend lifted her glass and everyone had a good cheer, and he was left spluttering in the corner.
