For all the Maybes and the Don't-Knows

F R DOUBLE E D - D O M spells FREEDOM [Youtube, perhaps NSFW]. In 1967, photographer William Klein created what is possibly the most surreal cinematic political satire imaginable: Mr. Freedom. Featuring production design outlandish enough to later inspire Beck and Pizzicato Five, the film went on to bewilder French critics and tank at the box office. Today, Criterion makes Mr. Freedom available on DVD for the first time in America as part of the strange and wonderful box set, The Delirious Fictions of William Klein.

Pass the... studio.

Is there any sort of discography for albums created/recorded at Studio PASS? What was the story behind Studio PASS anyway?

A dim question.

Let's say there are two identical light fixtures, on two identical dimmer switches. One fixture has two 15W dimmer-compatible compact fluorescent lights, the other has two standard 60W incandescent bulbs. The dimmer switches are turned just beyond the "off" position to the "dimmest" position (identical on both dimmers). What will the difference in power utilization be between the two fixtures?

In the tiki tiki tiki tiki lounge...

Apart from the Rainforest Cafe or the Tonga Room, what kid-friendly restaurants in the Bay Area have that "Enchanted Tiki Room" vibe?

Someday we'll find it, the film grain connection.

Why are films from the 70s so grainy?

The lighting above us.

In Slate's Explainer column today, they have the unanswered questions of 2007. Most are inscrutable, unanswerable or ridiculous... but I've wondered this one myself too many times to let it go: "Very rare to find a hotel room with a light on the ceiling, they're usually floor lamps or desk lamps. Is there some structural reason for that?"

We've been bugged!

Yep, it's yet another I found this scary-looking bug in the garage question. What is it?

In search of cheap, fast BGP peering.

Other than XO Communications, who in San Francisco offers ADSL2 service or bonded G.SHDSL service (aka "Ethernet over Copper") and allows BGP?

My HDTV doesn't like my LD. Hope me.

So, I just hooked up my laserdisc player to the HDTV, and boy does it look bad. Looks like I'll need a scaler/upconverter, but they seem prohibitively expensive. Help!

Two gyros, hold the thanatos.

Where can I get pre-packaged gyros meat in San Francisco?

Can anyone explain the strange results received when doing a search on the keyword 'http' on Google?

Allowing an at-fault party to pay out-of-pocket.

I got rear-ended by a drunk driver. They're offering to pay the damage outright versus going through the insurance company. Do I take the offer?

A short question about love (and hate).

Did the movie NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (discussed here) originate the device of having HATE tattooed on one hand, with LOVE tattooed on the other?

An earlier generation of VoIP.

An early VoIP casualty. Think VoIP is a new phenomenon, and talking to people with Skype or Free World Dialup is incredible? Ten years ago, Onlive! put the Onlive! Traveler -- a collaborative VoIP product that's amazing even today -- into beta. With Traveler, a Windows95 (!) PC, a decent graphics card, a SoundBlaster and a dial-up Internet connection, you could not only chat with a friend, but participate in collaborative chats with the avatars of multiple friends in various 3-D rendered worlds. The avatars' lips even moved with your voice (.mpg movie). You could talk worldwide, for free. But even though Onlive! was around well before the boom, they were an unfortunate dot-com casualty, as Traveler never quite took off. Perhaps Traveler was doomed by the limited connectivity available in the mid 90's, or perhaps it was doomed by its occasionally creepy, fantastic 3-D designs -- but due to a number of collaborators, the Traveler still lives on today on a series of servers, and the (free) software still works on modern Windows PCs.

Close the BART car doors, HAL.

Has BART ever operated regularly without drivers?

Posted: Question about, er, posting.

Why do signs to deter trespassers use the convention "Posted: No Trespassing" when the very fact that such a sign is physically posted makes the use of the word "Posted" redundant?

What... up?

The 70's seemed to be gripped by "Up the [blank]" mania. Up The Organization (1970). Up the Chastity Belt (1971). Up the Sandbox (1972). Up the Workers (1973). Up the Academy (1980). Then there was "Up With People," but that doesn't really seem related in tone. Where did the "Up the..." form come from, and why the prevalence in 70's culture?

Television... so fresh, and chocolatey too!

My girlfriend is obsessed with the Cillit Bang advertisement remix. Back in the 80's (or early 90's), there was a similar "remix" video of 50's black and white advertisements set to a beat-box soundtrack, with "lyrics" consisting of samples the sales pitches of those ads. Can anyone ID this?

Apropos of Nothing

How can I obtain a copy of Eduardo Paolozzi's short film The History of Nothing for home viewing in the United States? Any format is acceptable.

Scare Factor: High

Scare Factor: High Few children emerged from the 70's or 80's without having been jarred at least once by the abrupt transition from a television show's credits to the interstitial animations of the broadcaster or production company. While today closing logos can often be funny, in the late 60's and 70's, the choppy animation and atonal music often made them slightly (or very) unsettling. Thankfully, a group of netizens are preserving the legacy of the closing logo.

Guilty or Innocent?

Guilty or innocent? Thanks to the work of the Northwestern University Center on Wrongful Convictions, an organization with a long history of assisting in the exoneration of the innocent, the case of Alan Beaman, convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1993, may be reopened soon. [mi]

Up until the late 80's, while shopping at a large department store, you'd often hear a series of chimes in different patterns. These chimes weren't related to the time, nor were they the door alarms you hear in stores these days. What was the purpose of these chimes?

Can I import some Coca-Cola Light?

NotQuitePepsiBlueFilter: Vacationing in Europe, I was surprised and pleased by the flavor of Coca-Cola Light, which is not made with the same formula as the rather dire-tasting American Diet Coke. The drink tastes pretty much the same as Coke's new C2, but instead of that soda's bizarre half-sugar, half-sweetener compromise, the European Coke Light does it with no sugar or calories. Why they don't sell this stuff in America is truly beyond me.

Thing is, I'd like to import some -- and while imports of other (slightly stiffer) European beverages are common, I can't find anywhere locally or on Google who will sell it to Americans. Then again, my EU language skills are lacking. Anywhere I can have a 12-pack of this stuff shipped to me?

Men's Custom Tailoring

Looking at this thread about fitted shirts, I figured I'd ask about my men's dress shirt predicament. I'm 6'5", have a 14.5" neck, 36" arms and a 37" waist. If you've ever shopped, well, anywhere for men's shirts, you'll know that such a size doesn't exist. My neck seems to throw everything off.

I've tried the Lands' End and JC Penney online custom shirt services and the shirts have come out very wrong -- they don't seem to rely on real measurements, just generalities about one's build which don't take my quirks into account, and I get the feeling they're just sewing long arms onto a small-necked shirt (which doesn't fit well around my torso). I've gone in for a few custom tailoring quotes and, well, I really don't want to have to pay $500 for a small set of shirts that I won't wear every day. Anyone else solve this one?
