Queen Not Available; What to see/do in London in November with Child?
Coram's Fields! "Coram's Fields is a unique seven acre playground and park for children living in or visiting London. It is open access, provides a calm, safe and stimulating environment where children can play freely and enjoy a varied programme of activities."
One of the awesome things about Coram's Fields? Adults can visit only when accompanied by a child. Plus it's really close to the British Museum!

Should I eat the caramel wafers?
I am usually in the FUCK NO DON'T EAT IT camp, but I would totally eat the wafers.
If it says "best by" rather than "use by" I reckon you'll still be alive tomorrow.

Good / bad opinions about Schmap?
They've got one of my picture in their Barcelona edition; like yours, mine was a pretty boring photo (the sort of thing you'd find a low quality postcard). I wasn't planning to do anything with it myself, so I figured: Sure, go ahead, as long as you credit me. Which they did. No biggie.
(In reference to Shellycat's comment, I just checked their original email request, and the wording implied it was opt-in. They let me know that my photo had been shortlisted, and... [more]

Is a refund enough?
Is a refund enough? It depends what you want to get from this experience.
Are you entitled to a refund? Yes, and that's what you got. You paid for a cookie, and it was a faulty cookie, so you were out one cookie. So they refunded your money. When they did that, they made you whole.
You also had a concern that your faulty cookie might be an indication of tampering, and you wanted to make sure other people weren't injured. Which is great.... [more]

How can I help my son get laid?
He is his own person. He is different to you. He'll be fine.
Also: would you be asking this question if your 19 year old daughter joined the abstinence club?

Horrible hatable roommate trouble!
Generally, in a household of three housemates, if one housemate wants to move his girlfriend into his room and therefore add an extra tenant, he has to first seek the consent of the other two housemates. Whether this is contractually required or merely good form depends on the lease. In some situations it may also be necessary to seek permission from the landlord.
If even one housemate is unhappy with adding an additional tenant, then the housemate with the girlfriend... [more]

A couple of clarifications to my comment above:
1. I said that H's vote is worth one in three, but to be clear, it's not a "majority rules" situation; for you to move in, the agreement among the three housemates must be unanimous.
2. As Meg-Murry said, the fact that your moving in will lower the rent per tenant is only one of the many effects you will have on the household. Your boyfriend's housemates will decide for themselves... [more]

Heartwarming Movies. The Morning After.
Sleepless In Seattle. While Meg Ryan is planning her marriage to a perfectly nice man (who seems ideal for her save for a couple of quirks and allergies), she is secretly wooing - and stalking - a complete stranger she heard on a late night radio show. Her callous subterfuge escalates, finally culminating in a scene of sadistic betrayal: on Valentine's Day, while dining in a Manhattan restaurant with her adoring, oblivious, fiance, she blurts a garbled confession and then abandons him to run... Film/TV: Cheesy music for a haunting effect?
My all-time favourite example of cheesy music used to powerful emotional effect is Lars von Triers's Breaking the Waves. There are two versions, apparently, but in the one I've seen, the (bleak, harrowing, amazing) film is intercut with chapter cards - a static image of scenery - accompanied by Elton John's Your Song. (There's another version that has a different song for every chapter card, but I don't think it's as effective.) I've never like Elton John, but Lars von Trier endowed Your... [more]

Which Shape of Pasta is the Cheapest?
All things being equal (i.e. disregarding the fact that some pasta is actually made with higher quality ingredients than others), I suspect that the pricing variance for different shapes of pasta may be an example of price discimination. In other words, customers who buy pasta because it's a cheap meal can buy inexpensive spaghetti, while those who care about "quality" over price can choose rigatoni and farfalle instead.

Help whip my post-obesity body into shape
The bad news is, not much can be done to tighten skin after weight loss, aside from cosmetic surgery. (There's a lot of snake oil out there that's best avoided.) But the good news is that your skin tone will improve quite a bit, of its own accord, during the first six months after the weight is lost. Although you've a lot of stretch marks, you're young. So hold tight - you may see some improvement yet!

If *I'm* late, think what her husband's saying.
Doesn't it mean, "I am late for our meeting because I have been enjoying an illicit daliiance with a married woman. If the extent of my lateness annoys you, just imagine the enraged reaction of my companion's husband, as he finally puts two and two together and realises that his wife's having an affair!" That's how I read it, anyhow.

"Fine corinthian leather!!"
What sort of leather is it? Is it, for example, a pigmented leather with a poly-urethane surface protectant, or is it a semi-aniline leather with a wax finish? Or is it a fully aniline leather, ie. a very soft, natural, drum-dyed leather without any surface finish at all? (If it's fully aniline, be careful what you try on it, as it is very porous and easily damaged - even by water.) Here's some further information about the main types of leather.
My suggestion, no... [more]

She loved me longer time than the others
Forgive my candour, but it's possible that you've had ho-hum sex with 30 women because your unusual paucity of sexual imagination and technique is resulting in sex that bores most of your partners. The women you're sleeping with are likely not getting enough foreplay or excitement to be sufficiently turned on (they're not moaning, clutching at you etc).
However, that one woman you mentioned did get really turned on with you. Perhaps she likes the... [more]

Help with "pay what you can" Concept
San Francisco theatre group The Diggers, who were based in Haight-Ashbury in the late 1960s, had a number of free shops in the local neighbourhood. The shops were stocked with donated or reclaimed goods - including food - and "shoppers" were encouraged to take the merchandise for free. The Diggers also held free music festivals, gave away free food, and ran a free medical clinic.
They named themselves after the 17th century English egalitarians of the same... [more]

Seeking the Internet Clueless
A few years ago when I was writing a news blog for an online poetry journal, I notiiced that any post about Billy Corgan's poetry career (usually written in a carefully moderated yet undeniably snarky tone) would attract nonsensical all-caps comments assuming I either knew Corgan, or perhaps even was him. It never failed to amuse and bewilder me.

Thanks for your response, TryTheTilapia; that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
On a less happy note, I have just been informed that the show is completely sold out, and has been for months (the booking site seems to agree). Ack!
Thanks anyway, folks.

Engagement ring on or off?
Like others above, I find that if I sleep wearing rings I awake less refreshed. I prefer to sleep unencumbered, and keep a decorative bowl on my bedside table to put my rings in overnight. I put my wedding and engagement rings back on as soon as I've showered each morning. No big deal.

Why did you wink at me?
Sometimes people wink by accident, or as a nervous mannerism. Sometimes they wink in greeting. Or by way of acknowledgement. Or to convey inclusiveness. It's impossible to know what this woman's intentions were, but personally, I wouldn't read anything into the gesture.

Poor friend, indeed
Your roommate has agreed to pay $300 per month for rent, and this is the maximum he is willing to spend on accommodation. If you weren't extending the lease for six months so your new girlfriend can move in, he would just move out when the lease is up and find a new place for $300 or under. As it is, you are extending it, and it is in your interest to have him stay for the extra month and a half so you don't have to pay the full rent yourself in between him moving out and... [more]

Books about everything to do with Australia
They speak the truth. Foster's is pretty much only made for the export market; the locals don't touch it.
If you're interested in reading some Australian fiction, I'd suggest Cloudstreet by Tim Winton and Illywhacker by Peter Carey, both of which are brilliant novels that have a real sense of place. You could read some Nick Earls - who is sort of the Australian Nick Hornby - his novels are set in Brisbane (personally I can't stand him, but tastes differ).

What should we do in Barcelona?
There's an open-topped double-decker tour bus that does three routes around Barcelona; you buy a ticket for about 20 euros and jump on and off all day. You can get a two-day ticket for about 24 euros. It is absolutely worth the money, since it takes you to all the major sights and is generally a charming way to travel around the city.
Also, catch the cable car up to Montjuic.
