Ask post: Thank-you gift for a performer and opera-lover?
A little late to the party, but a book of libretti with side-by-side English translations. Something like this.

Ask post: PortlandInternetFilter
I live in 97214 (hi neighbor!) and I've had Qwest DSL with Aracnet (now SpiritOne) as the ISP for several years. Every once in a while it goes south, but mostly it works just fine. Aracnet has been a great ISP as well.

Ask post: Techno + Classical = JOY
Actually I believe William Orbit (but possibly someone else) re-mixed his version of Adagio for Strings with a techno beat. But, lo, it is an abomination.

Ah, on preview and checking the YouTubes, it was Ferry Corsten who did it. And, ye, it is truly an abomination.

Ask post: Betrayed by the sound engineer... Great songs, Horrible recordings...
Rush had used the same producer for its first 9 albums but "they felt dissatisfied with long-time producer Terry Brown's studio treatment of Signals and parted ways with him". Fan conventional wisdom (and I agree) is that it sounds very muddy and is a stark contrast from both earlier and later records. If you're interested, the Wikipedia page does have song samples from Signals other albums.

Ask post: Such an epic waste of MeFiFoo, but I must know: why does Brett Favre pronounce his name that way? Why, god, why?
Having, if not written, at least endorsed the Favre Family Cookbook: Three Generations of Cajun and Creole Cooking from the Gulf Coast, it seems safe to say that he's at least part Cajun.

In Louisiana I would hear Fabre pronounced as FAHB, Oubre as OOOB, so I'd presume that Favre sans Madden would just be FAHV.

Also along film lines, in a film class in a college, a classmate flatly stated that Marlon Brando was miscast as Don Corleone in The Godfather and his performance was cliché.

Ask post: Public transport from portland to scneic places?
If she's up for it, she could rent a bike and ride the Columbia River Highway out to the gorge. Crown Point is my personal favorite stop on the way out to the waterfalls.

TriMet could probably take her pretty close to the scenic bits without ever turning a pedal.

Ask post: Can you help me learn to like (maybe even love!) exercising?
N-thing some sort of bike riding. I can't commute to work on my bike all that often, so I'm very excited when I get to do it (about 22 miles round trip). Otherwise I try to do lunchtime rides around the office for 45 minutes to an hour. If you have a few hills to mix in you can get a great, varied workout.

As someone else mentioned, I get out regularly to prepare for "event" rides. It gives you something to look forward to day-to-day and the events themselves... [more]

Ask post: My XP takes too long to shut down & boot up. What could be causing it?
I had long (> 10 minute) boots of XP. This fixed my problem, by changing \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler:

Also, check the event manager after a boot. If it's a service failing/timing out, it should pretty clear which one it is.

Stay at Hotel Domus Praetoria. Trip Advisor steered us right. It's about as good a bargain as could be found in Rome. We stayed there this past spring. The service was excellent and it's 2 blocks from Termini so you can get where you want to be easily.

Hmm, I can't think of any place that would definitely have political coverage on the big screen. Roots has cheap beer on Tuesday nights, isn't very crowded and you might be able to talk the bartender into switching from X-TREME SNOWBOARDING to CNN.

Native born, Cajun-descended gumbo cook seconding that it's OK not to have okra.

My favorite gumbo recipe is based on Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen (as linked by 6550), Cajun Seafood with Andouille Smoked Sausage IIRC. I highly recommend going with that and using whatever ingredients are available to you. Mise en place is your friend and you can mix your spices in one bowl, process onion, celery and bellpepper into another bowl and get it... [more]

Playing technique counts for a lot on this one. Once you've got compressor + tremolo going at about the right tempo, time your picking with the "off" sweeps.

lekvar: tremolo is amplitude modulation.

Ask post: Let's grow grape vines in Washinton!
My house in Portland came with a few Muscadine grape vines. They're more common in the Southeast, but with nothing more than sporadic pruning they produce a lot and are seemingly indestructible. Unfortunately, muscadine wine is not so good. They do, however, make a fabulous jelly with a unique taste.

Alternately, you should be able to buy juice from homebrew/wine making shops or even buy grapes in bulk from productive vineyards.

Ask post: Clipless pedals clip in?
I'm a non-racer road rider and I have double-sided Shimano SPD pedals (PD-540) and Pearl Izumi mountain shoes. The shoes are comfy and walkable. The combo has worked for me from stop and start commuting up to a century.

The pedals were about $50 new off eBay and the shoes around $70 from Performance. I considered it money well spent.

Ask post: How much of cycling is athlete, and how much is machine?
I think the comments so far are on track. It's mostly lack of speed-focused training, but your bike is definitely a factor.

I agree that you should strongly consider getting a "real" road bike. Tire and shoe/cleat upgrades would help out your current bike (if you haven't already done that), but switching to drop bars would be rather expensive and possibly not even possible. And at least you can easily transfer the pedals to a new bike.... [more]

Ask post: Is it worth it for my dad to get his bike fitted in Boston?
As much as I benefited from a pro fit (MASSIVELY!), your father's bike may not be that well suited to being modified during a fit. With a road bike, it's not that difficult to change the handlebars, stem length or angle, seat height, angle or setback. With a hybrid, you may be limited to just seat tweaks if the handlebars and stem are one big piece.

Also WRT clips, it doesn't take that long to get used to them and they aren't a problem for me on an errands or the commute.... [more]

Ask post: U2 Drums Howto?
In the Joshua Tree episode of Classic Albums, it's Daniel Lanois that specifically calls out his love of Larry's drumming. My guess would be that he was largely or at least partially responsible for taking the drum sound away from the ordinary. IMHO, he is as strong a sonic texture creator as Eno.

Also, IIRC, that's Lanois tapping his coffee cup in the intro to Zoo Station.

I'm late to the party, but I'll put my 2 cents in: bike commuting on Barbur isn't that bad. You do have to merge into the roadway from time to time, but it will get you pretty much all the way from downtown to Tigard. Alternately, riding up and then down Terwilliger by OHSU to Barbur will let you skip several bridge merges.

I was pretty happy with my FF X3. I upgraded to an HX machine, but if you're not ready to spend for HX, a FF should do just fine. Early FF machines did have serious problems, but AFAIK, newer machines (last 3 years or so) have resolved them.

This probably doesn't apply to DL or plate searches, but for deeper criminal background searches agencies sometimes require the officer to enter a reason code (is a suspect, etc.) before conducting a search. This would also be logged along with the officer's name, agency, search criteria, etc.

Ask post: Is this free hot tub worth the effort?
My 15+ year old hot tub looks pretty much like that, but in a reddish hue. Remember that the fiberglass holds the entire weight of the water, so you'll know pretty quick if it's leaking.

As for taking a free tub: it depends a lot on the age and condition of the mechanical parts assuming the fiberglass is still sound (which it probably is). I recently had to replace the aged electro-mechanical control system with a nifty new spa pack and that was moderately expensive.... [more]

Ask post: Help me make good coffee
I'm guessing that your grind was too fine when you only got a few drops. There is a fine line between just enough pressure on the tamp and/or grinding fineness and too much of either so that the puck chokes the pump. Since your superautomatic does the tamping, it's probably the grind.

Also, coffeegeek has an excellent tutorial on milk steaming, though from your picture I couldn't tell what kind of wand it has.
