The heart condition is spelled differently
I’m about to discard Lifehacker from my RSS viewer. It seems every post now is a flashback to a year ago, some really obvious organizational tip, some so-anal-as-to-be-silly tip that takes more work than it saves, or a recap of AskMe.
IIRC the editors get paid by the post and have daily minimums to meet, so it's no surprise that they constantly and cheerfully recycle their own old material and repost content from any number of other blogs at a furious... [more]

Just Like Rudy if He Had Been a Bike Wheel
Some explanation:
The wheel he exchanged with the pro was a relatively cheap, everyday one for a highest end, carbon, light, fragile, only-to-be-ridden-by-people-weighing-less-than-150-pounds wheel that probably costs well above $1000 for the rim, hub, spokes and cassette
The pro's bike had a 10 speed drivetrain while the guy's had a 9 speed, meaning that the gear shifting doesn't quite matchup. The pro probably only had a few gear combos that would keep the chain from... [more]

ardgedee: there were CSC team cars, neutral service vehicles and wheel-carrying motorcycles, but as someone in the original forum post mentioned, they stick to the lead group and the peleton. At the time, Julich was in a no man's land between the leaders and the pack so it was faster for him to chase down red jersey guy than wait 3 minutes for a new wheel.

Mapping beer. Glorious beer.
So what are the environmental implications of drinking an import?
Depends on whether it's from a bottle or keg.
On topic: truly Portland is the One True City wrt beer, but half of the pushpins in my neighborhood are just regular ol' bars. OTOH, I have 3 micro-distilleries in my neighborhood, so I can't complain.

Zed-neck
Oh man I hope he pulls through OK. I saw Zednik play in Juniors here in Portland dozens of times. It's easy to forget that the now-NHLers aren't goofy, pimply teenagers any more.

Clapping Music
I would imagine that the vast majority of percussionists worth their salt could perform both parts simultaneously
Don't conductors need to count in different tempos with each hand as well? A friend in college taught me the the 4/4 and 3/4 simultaneously rhythm, but I imagine more complex combos must crop up.
Also, my favorite pattern phasing example is King Crimson's Frame by Frame when Fripp & Belew play... [more]

Thanks for the post. It's good to see Rush get (mostly) love from MetaFilter.
If you've ever liked them, do go see them live. They are excellent in their own geeky way on stage. Best of all, the aren't afraid to face up to their goofy past (kimonos, Rand, Epic Battles Between Good and Evil, their age, etc.) and just play the songs with glee.
Evidence: the last tour's intermission video and By-Tor and the Snowdog animation.... [more]

Bush dines at Dooky Chase's restaurant in the Treme
Thanks for linking Shelly Midura's letter ColdChef. I think that it is FPP-worthy by itself. It was first forwarded to me by a dyed-in-the-wool conservative with a "You go girl!" comment, which was unusual to say the least. He did, of course, question whether her facts accurate so the librul didn't get a totally free pass...
Come to think of it, I would love to see the letter annotated with citations so that naysayers wouldn't have yet more grist for their mill.... [more]

A quarter pounder with cheese - in a cup
PeterMcDermott is right about F.T. not being the only (and possibly not even a good) way to improve prices for coffee growers.
This past Saturday I had a chance to sip COE Hacienda la Esmeralda, which retails for over $50 per pound. I don't think it's FT, but those farmers got any unbelievable price.

Really? For me, with Firefox + Windows 2000, there was no embedded sound.

Charles Whitman and the UT Tower
I remember a TV movie where an actor portrayed Whitman as some kind of scuzzbag crazed-Vietnam-vet type; Whitman was pretty clean-cut. And naturally enough, they did NOT film it at UT, either.
The Deadly Tower was the Kurt Russell TV movie. It was was filmed at the Louisiana State Capitol, which looks nothing like a college campus.

TdF Joux-Plane Spoiler
Why is it that that Cycling News article reads like a string of telecom company ads?
"Phonak rider Floyd Landis"
"Patrik Sinkewitz (T-Mobile)"
"Klöden's T-Mobile squad"
...
seriously, is all the commentary on this sport so laden with advertising? I'm not a cycling fan, so I'm genuinely curious.
FWIW, Phonak isn't a telecom,... [more]

No, Plutor, this is like talking about game six of the 04 ALCS only if Johnny Damon batted in 10 runs without his team's support. F'Landis just owned the two hundred best cyclists in the world on the steepest hills they will ever climb. Unassisted by his team.
Not to mention doing it just 24 hours after a complete physical (and probably emotional) breakdown in the previous stage AND riding on a massacred hip bone that leaves him barely able to walk.

A New Low In Getting High
Thanks for the post klangklangston. Anton lived in my basement for a few weeks when he temporarily moved BJM up to Portland. He seemed like an OK guy (especially in light of the way he was potrayed in Dig), but I never got to see them live or hear any of their albums.
