Leslie Harpold Remembered
I want to write something about Leslie, but I don't know what to write. I never met her personally and probably haven't visited her web site in over a year, but she to me epitomizes the web and creativity and just being an interesting person. She was one of the A-listers of the web and will be sorely missed.

Al-Aaimmah bridge catastrophe
Can we please, please not use this tragedy as an excuse for yet another argument about the US presence in Iraq? Thank you.
A causes B. Can we stop talking about A and just focus on the tragedy of B? No.

Kinky 2006: Why the Hell Not?
My favorite policy statement:
DE-WUSSIFICATION
Our icons are being demeaned. Cowboys are no longer heroes for our children, but subject to derision. We are being laughed at instead of respected in the rest of the country. What has happened to our glorious heritage? This is the great state of Texas! We are not wusses, we are Texans. "We will beat back the wussification of Texas if we have to do it one wuss at a time." - Kinky Friedman.... [more]

Not My Pyramid
Only 31% of Americans are obese, so clearly there's more to be done by 69% of Americans. In today's blame-others-first culture it would be easy to say, well, I can't eat more today because the sections of the USDA's website telling me how to eat more aren't finished. But you can! You can eat more today and help maintain the healthy Agribusiness economy that has grown through decades of collaboration with the USDA.
Fucking brilliant.

We love you Tania
And don't forget the best song written about the event, Tania by Camper Van Beethoven
Oh, my beloved Tania
How I long to see your face
Photographed in fifteen second intervals
In a bank in San Leandro
A Polaroid of you, Cinque
With a seven-headed dragon
In a house in Daly City
Don't be sad, my beloved Tania
They say your father never liked Stephen Weed anyway

Buddy Rich on the Muppet Show (QuickTime)
That upward glance on the cymbals that Rich did was HOTT.
I got to see Buddy Rich play with his big band when I was about 15. I also got to meet him backstage. I was petrified that I would say something wrong and that he'd ridicule me, but he was very gracious and gave me his autograph.
Thanks for this link, safetyfork.

I'm reminded of a Bill Hicks joke:
If any of you here are in advertising, kill yourself. Seriously. Kill yourself.
(by the way, I temporarily couldn't find Bill Hicks' name in my brain, so I googled "comedian, texas, dead" and the first link was Bill Hicks is dead. Thanks, google!)

How Walmart Is Destroying America And The World: And What You Can Do About It
You're kidding, right?
Thank you for completely missing the point. I think the next person who says that we're piling on WalMart simply because they are successful or because we hate the poor should be forced to go back and repeat their 11th grade economics class. Or maybe we should just pull down their gym shorts in front of the class and point/laugh at them.
Please go watch this right now and then you can come back here and make inane... [more]

Thanks for taking the time to check out that Frontline program, h00dini.
"So manufacturers move to China in search of cheaper labor and US workers lose their jobs. Big deal. The bottom line is that you, Joe Consumer, gets lower prices in the end."
So, the holy grail is lower prices? That seems so simplistic to me. It seems to me that a better standard of living should be the goal. Low prices? Sure. But give me a better life and... [more]

One man's retirement math: Social Security wins
unreason, can you point to a study that says SS won't last more than 20 years in its current state? The reason I ask is because I've heard that we've got about 50-75 years before SS gets into trouble.

By the way, I just read this comment on Scott Rosenberg's blog post about SS and felt it should be repeated here:
"Privatizers want to end Social Security, but can't say so. They. Want. To. End. Social. Security. You eat the last orange, but replace it with a lemon. Hey, they're citrus fruit, what's your problem? My problem, asshole, is that I want my orange. It was mine, and you took it."

I wouldn't mind if we discussed this topic on Metafilter every damn day. Wal-Mart has profoundly affected the world's economy (in a bad way) and people need to be made aware of it.
If you have not seen that Frontline program yet, do yourself a favor and watch it right now. It's Christmas week, you don't have any work that needs to get done.

I think you're underestimating the number of bad movies released every year, COBRA.
And I think that the cameo by Kurt Vonnegut was exactly what catapulted Back to School over Mannequin into the coveted statistical middle spot. But, that's just my opinion.

RIP, Branden
I can't stand George Bush and think the Iraq war is a colossal mistake. Still, I agree with Andrew Cooke that you are cheapening Branden's memory to make a political point.
Or, to put it another way, maybe Branden died for something he believed in, no matter how many of us think he is wrong.

Young Boy and the Sea
Oh . . . I used to be the captain of my own cruise ship. It was the kind of boat folks rent for weddings, parties, you know, that kind of thing. But on the night in question it had been rented for a prom. Oh, the girls looked so lovely in their dresses, the boys such fine little gentlemen in their tuxedos. They were all drinking and dancing and spiking the punch. I was dizzy with delight when suddenly - my ship sank. We all went into the water. Then came Skoora, picking us off one by one by one...
