MeFi post: Write Me Stories
Having seen these, whenever someone accuses my handwriting of being like the scrawlings of a nine-year-old (which happens about once a week), now I can say "No! I have the penmanship of an artist".

The entirety of "An Evening Wasted..."? Where's "Oedipus Rex"? "The Elements"? I wait with bated breath...

Dammit! Missed the comment by griphus above.

MeFi post: Commie Kids Telly
I always liked Pat & Mat (Czech). Excellent mindless stupidity.

Also, not eastern-bloc, but the favourite cartoon of my youth was probably Ulysses 31 (French/Japanese). I remain scarred to this day.

MeFi post: A tribute to the Corsetiere
I like the way they arranged the big block of links to be in an exaggerated coke bottle shape.

MeFi post: Moby Grape Just Can't Catch a Break
I never understood the ongoing venom directed at Wow. Murder In My Heart For The Judge, He, and Miller's Blues are all damn good songs. Although my favourite Moby Grape moment is still Someday, from the first album. What a sequence of chords. I may have to steal it.

MeFi post: The Death of High Fidelity
Kind of a tangent of a question, but does anyone know why sometimes the 'kbps' reader on my WinAmp will flip like crazy on some mp3s, reading from 160kbps-256kbps?

Because they're variable-rate encoded, to (hopefully) only use the higher rate when it's necessary.

MeFi post: Best Buy Bodhisattva
if Kyle spent some of that time, energy, focus, and talent learning to play an actual guitar, he'd have developed skills that are also modes of expression and communication, and much less finitely fun than one game. But maybe that's just the old fogey in me.

Have you seen the South park Guitar Hero episode? "Real guitars are for old people"

MeFi post: All you ever needed to know about crayons
I predict this will be another of those complete genius posts that only attracts about 10 comments.

So happy that my prediction of few comments was way off the mark, but on another note, what were the dud colours in a typical box? I have far off memories of my sister's Crayola set with the black, red and a few others worn down to the nib, while snot green (warning - may not be actual colour name) stood there majestically in the box, tall as the day it was bought.

MeFi post: Shit's getting all crazy
how on earth does that resemble anything a 10 year old could do at home?

I think the reason for the downfall of hair metal lies somewhere in that sentence.

MeFi post: General Motors Heritage Center houses four decades of GM's electric drive vehicles
I'm not normally one for Simpsons quotes, but by any chance is one of the exhibits an anthropomorphic car that says "Hi, I'm an electric car, I can't go very fast or very far, and if you tdrive me, people will think that you're gay"? I wouldn't be that surprised...

MeFi post: It's hard to be more cynical than this.
And as usual, the Unionist establishment stick their fingers in their ears and go "la la la I can't hear you":

But the Northern Ireland Retired Police Officers Association said Mrs O'Loan had done undeserved damage to the reputation of "many fine officers", and criticised the public manner in which the investigation had been carried out. Ken Maginnis, a former Unionist MP who is now Lord Maginnis of Drumglass - dismissed the report as... [more]

This is a little strange , coming from the guy who ripped off the melody of a Coke ad (I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing) for his second single (Shakermaker).

MeFi post: PBS: crosshaired?
The picture at the top of the NYT article reminds me a little of Stryker from X-Men 2, who, if I remember rightly, was a sleazy public official with a hidden agenda.

MeFi post: Hurling, the other Irish sport which doesn't include drinking too much beer
A similar thing was done years ago, on (UK) channel 4 when they would have an Aussie Rules team take on a Gaelic Football team.

It's an annual event now.

MeFi post: electronic music guide
I'd just be pissed if I was Stockhausen and someone told me I wasn't in the comprehensive guide to electronic music.

He's in there, just about. Click on Downtempo, then Musique Concrete. He's the fourth sample.

MeFi post: Would you buy a used car from this man?
Did anyone see the DeLorean documentary on BBC 4 last night? Think it was a repeat. Turns out the DeLorean was basically a modified Lotus Esprit, and that the first few hundred cars to arrive in the US had to be completely rebuild due to shoddy work by the then inexperienced workforce.

MeFi post: Land Reform and Mass Trespass
The Irish market has been just as nuts lately - house prices have tripled in the last ten years. Irish investors are now buying large quantities of land and property in Britain, the new EU accession countries, hell, just about anywhere, since just about anywhere is cheaper than Ireland.

Originally, Glastonbury was meant to be their last I think. I'd heard "last Orbital show" advertising for the Oxegen festival in Ireland too.

It's not even an original idea. The same dead people delivering telegrams thing was in The Bill years ago, except in that case there was only one terminally ill patient, a heroin addict dying of AIDS.

Piero Umiliani's non gimmicky cult stuff is pretty good too. He did tons of great loungey, Moog driven Air type music 3 decades before Air. Check Kazaa/whatever Lady Magnolia or Cotton Road for starters.
