MeTa post: Apology.
Dude, that Sensitive Guy act is not going to get you laid. Especially on a web site.

In my experience, nothing one does gets one laid on a web site.

MeTa post: Misogyny Filter (?)
the guy who worked in all-women office and they were totally taunting him and making him feel uncomfortable? he got buried under an avalanche of "GET OVER IT"

Oh bullshit, that thread could not be described in any such way. Reread the thread. ONE person (a male) told the guy to "man up"; the rest of the posters generally posted very thoughtful suggestions about how to distinguish between his being too sensitive and his co-workers... [more]

I thought it was a fairly simple question and I'm completely and totally baffled by the men who answer as if they are all collectively being forced to pay child support for babies that were conceived immaculately when they were wearing aforementioned full body condoms.

Yes, that is a disturbing aspect. It's like some women who act as though all other women must be wildly attracted to and out to get their husbands.... if you're really THAT fearful that... [more]

Wait until it's viable and safe for the fetus to grow outside the womb and then the "it's a woman's body" argument will probably be shown the door. I'm not sure whether that's a good or bad thing, but I can see it happening somewhere down the line.

Yes, this is true. If a couple divorce when they have fertilized eggs in the fridge at the fertility clinic and one person wants to go ahead and have the eggs implanted while the other doesn't,... [more]

Afroblanco: Not like I expect any of you to understand, since it's such always such a freakin' boyzone in here.

Jessamyn: It's not generally, but comments like this make it moreso.

Uh, Jessamyn, that whole comment was obviously tongue-in-cheek.

so they have this policy of forcing biological parents to take financial responsibility for their children.

Still false. Women get to legally walk away.

No, your comment is false. Women do not get to unilaterally absolve themselves of the responsibilities of parenthood. BOTH bio parents have to agree to give up the child for adoption or it won't happen. If the man says, "I don't want to give up the baby for adoption, I... [more]

Did you hear about the guy who tried to go on the pill for men but his pharmacist screwed up so he was actually on Valium instead?

Now he has twenty kids, but he doesn't care.

I haven't found any evidence of mothers being forced to pay child support in a case where they tried put the child up for adoption and the fathers refused to consent.

I don't know of any (haven't looked for that matter) but I don't see why I need any to prove my point. Child support laws work both ways. If you can find child support legislation from any jurisdiction in North America which specifically absolves a biological mother from paying child... [more]

That should have read "which specifically absolves a biological mother from paying child support to a biological custodial father under any circumstances".

MeTa post: Metafilter in the Globe and Mail
No, that would be the National Post.

AKA the National Pest. The Post does understand pop culture in a way the Globe probably never will, but their political agenda leaves me grinding my teeth. I once wrote off a date because he said he read the Post because the Globe was "too left-wing for him".

The sun in it's many incarnations doesn't really qualify as a newspaper, it's much more a tabloid.

MeTa post: AskMe Answer Generator
And if Matt were the type to produce cheesy infomercial type products, he could make up a "AskMe Answer Generator" (I'm picturing something along the lines of a Magic 8 Ball, only green, bigger, and not a ball) and totally flog the shit out of it.

If you really feel like you're "answering basically the same few questions again and again", maybe you could just keep your pat answers out of those threads and leave some air for someone else who might have a different insight. And I don't intend that to seem mean spirited.

MeTa post: Ten Ten Ten Ten For Everything Everything Everything Everything.
Last year, when Matt rented a venue and had a party for MeFi's 8th birthday, I couldn't go. But I vowed to attend whatever main 10th birthday celebration there is, whatever it costs me in terms of vacation days and airfare or being someone's love slave for a month in exchange for a place to stay. And I find I'm standing by that vow. Ain't no mountain high enough!

MeTa post: Why anon?
Speaking of picking, why in hell didn't the booger eater post anonymously?

Yeah, I found that one a jaw-dropper. I kept imagining future scenarios in which the poster was arguing about, say, macroeconomics, or the military significance of American presence in Djibouti, and someone finessed him with a "Yeah, well, you eat your own boogers!"

And I also came very near vomiting at the mere idea of anyone doing that. No exaggeration.

Does North York even exist anymore? I thought it had been amalgamated into history.

It's not technically a "city" anymore, but people still use the old city names to indicate specific areas of Toronto.

MeTa post: In my mind, I've gone to Carolina, and in May, I'll be there in person.
I don't mind trivia (despite the fact that I suck at it), but I'm hesitant to commit to a night of trivia. We did it in Toronto once and I really didn't like the way it precluded actual conversation. I'd rather have the chance get to know people, it being common knowledge that you're all polymaths and the like.

Okay, maybe I should just pick a date. I would have thought a weekend night would be best since people don't have to worry about getting up early the next morning, but it seems you're all open to going out week nights. Here goes — let's say, Tuesday, May 27th, because that seems to work for most of the people who've posted in this thread.

Usually people make some sort of little sign to put on the table. Also there are often at least a few people who have met one another before, so that makes things easier. If you don't know anyone, just wander around looking curiously and expectantly at the various groups of people and looking for a sign. You'll see a group of wildly attractive people who are totally absorbed in each other and appear to be having an amazing time. THIS IS NOT THE MEFI CROWD. Keep looking until you see a table full...
