Ask post: I thought organic meant better!?
My local organic store carries Bonita from Ecuador, and I've noticed that they are a bit more stringy, but I always find them to be sweeter than conventional bananas when they ripen, and a bit softer. I like them better.

I appreciated the quality of organics recently when my sister made a vegetable platter for a family get together with conventionally grown produce bought in the grocery store, and the veggies had very little flavor, but they were colorful and looked good.... [more]

Ask post: single-serving recipes
I am single and live alone, but I'm not the most efficient cook - not a lot of frozen leftovers, and I don't always have time to make stock from leftover veggies, etc. However, I tend to like making enough food for 2-3 days, because I really like fresh vegetables and whole grains, so I want the food to live in the fridge (not the freezer) for at most a couple days after it's cooked. Most often I'll make 1.5 lbs. of boneless chicken breasts, baked, such as lemon dill or lightly seasoned, or... [more]

Ask post: what is tomato sauce really made of?
The only time I use fresh tomatoes is if I can get seasonal organic Roma tomatoes, because of the taste, as maudlin mentioned. But even then I typically will make a quick red sauce with crushed whole fresh tomatoes rather than a slow-cooked marinara (some heirlooms can be good for this, too). A quick red sauce can be nice, btw. As far as the puree, many traditional red sauce recipes use about half paste with water to half crushed or whole (such as this one, which is tasty but very fattening).... [more]

Ask post: Why must you shutdown, XP?
"- When it would reboot, the fan on the power supply would audibly increase in speed. The stock power supply on an IBM NetVista is 185w. Since we've installed a better video card and a second harddrive, I thought that the power supply might be over-taxed, so the stock has been replaced with a new 300w. This seemed to stop the reboots, but only for a week."

I think you might need more than 300W, particularly if you've added an AGP card. 400W... [more]

Ask post: Oh, btw, if you're going with Linux, I agree that...
I used several distros of Linux before settling on FreeBSD, and I never looked back. I still use Linux occasionally, but it's not my first choice anymore. I like open source *nix OSes because you can tinker with them, but I also like the architecture of *BSD better because it puts everything right in front of you and simplifies many administrative tasks. Linux has its strengths. Right now it supports more hardware and is generally more bleeding edge than FreeBSD (plus many Linux distributions... [more]

Oh, btw, if you're going with Linux, I agree that Mandrake or SuSE would be good choices for a newbie. FreeBSD is probably too hardcore for most newbies, but if you want to check it out, FreeSBIE is a live system CD running FreeBSD, much like the Knoppix idea.
