Echelon is a Mac application that, if you try to register it with a pirated serial number, will
delete your entire home directory. (Windows users: This is a very, very bad thing, second only to wiping the entire drive.) Is this a good way to fight piracy, and can it even be legal?

Do Not Taunt Happy Fun Yo-Yo.
Health officials in New York are concerned about "water yo-yos", a hot new toy imported from Asia filled with a "foul-smelling liquid" that has made some kids ill. So far, they haven't been able to figure out what the liquid is, who manufactures the toys, or who brings them into the United States.

HP shareholders vote to acquire Compaq... or not?
Stop me if you've heard this one before: One side has already declared victory while the other won't concede defeat until all the votes are counted. The margin appears to be less than one half of one percent, and a manual count is in the works.

Daniel Pearl's widow speaks out.
"Revenge would be easy, but it is far more valuable in my opinion to address this problem of terrorism with enough honesty to question our own responsibility as nations and as individuals for the rise of terrorism." (via the indispensable

This year's Oscar race is shaping up to be populated
entirely by dark horses. In the absence of any clear shoo-in nominees, the disputes among Oscar voters (as well as the marketing campaigns mounted by the studios) are growing increasingly heated.

and the New York Times assesses the range of reactions. Some think the drop in the death toll makes a big difference; others consider it inconsequential.

Call it the 0.5k.
Like a certain widely-heralded
Web design contest, the Minigame competition pits clever programmers against each other to see who can do the most with the least. But instead of Web pages, these competitors create games for obsolete 8-bit computers (Atari, Commodore, etc.) in two weight classes: 2K and 512 bytes (!).

65 minor characters battle it out, single-elimination tournament style. Sure, we all saw Troy McClure's rout of Uter coming a mile away, but did you really think Hans Moleman had what it took to knock off Rev. Lovejoy? Your votes help determine which supporting player is the supporting-est on
The Road to Springfield.

If you've ever wanted your first-person shooter to feel a little
less real,
NPRQuake may be just what you need. The
blueprint and
brushstroke versions are nice, but for my money you can't beat
sketchy Quake. Unfortunately, the NPR in the name stands for Non-Photorealistic Rendering, not
that other NPR, so don't expect Robert Siegel or Linda Wertheimer skins any time soon. (via

The truth is out there -- way,
way out there. Masons, Mormons, and William Shatner all play a role in this secret history of the millennia-old struggle between three alien factions for control of Earth. The battleground: a vast subterranean complex known as
Dreamland.

Author Caleb Carr argues in favor of
government regulation of the Internet. He suggests that if we don't have government making the rules, the corporations will make them instead. (Yeah, it's a Salon link. You got a problem with that? Keep it to yourself.)

No matter what your situation, if you're sexually active, you have a responsibility to
get tested. Yes, it's scary, but knowing your status (and acting accordingly) is the only way the spread of HIV can be stopped. If you live in the U.S.,
this site can direct you to a local organization that can perform the test -- often for free. (via

Then come back and do it again tomorrow. And every day until we don't need a Kids AIDS Site anymore.

It's common knowledge that Tetris players often see the game in their dreams. Now scientists are using the game to help understand
the very nature of dreams themselves. But it doesn't address the question I've always had: Why Tetris? Why doesn't this happen with Quake or Ultima or even Super Breakout?

Spike Jonze.
