Ask post: Six hour layover in Chicago
Don't forget to take rush hour into account, the trains going to be packed on your way into Chicago.

MeFi post: Sweet music video
I don't think there was much ironic posturing in this video. Just because a few kids go to concerts wearing glam rock shirts and alf pins doesn't mean the whole scene is so obnoxiously self conscious.

MeFi post: I'd like to say hello to all people on this board.
I love how in the first google return the first and only response is someone telling him to use a special forum they have for introductions. That exchange sums up my entire experience with community BBSs. Three quarters of all posts on those things are basically devoid of any thought, they're just knee-jerk reactions. I think in the future I'm going to carefully attend to live conversations, studying them to see if my friends idle chatter is similarly pointless.

And why... [more]

I actually did that because I'm sick and can't sing in tune very well so I blurred the dissonance with some echo.

MeFi post: 2008 Animated Short Film Oscar Noms
bjork24: Check your local arthouse movie listings, and you'll be able to see all of the animated and live action Oscar nominated short films on the big screen.

Except, of course, they aren't even coming to my state. I'm disappointed, really, YouTube does a horrible job of capturing the beauty in these shorts.

Ask post: Children's books for boys?
I got really into Redwall for quite a while as boy.

I also loved the following:
My Father's Dragon
The Dark is Rising Series
And a lot of the previously listed books like The Hobbit (hell, the whole series), Dahl, The Indian in the Cupboard and Little Stuart.... [more]

Ahhh, that's what I enjoy. The injury and death of my friends recreated in a poorly written second-person piece of crap. Can we stop this now?

Ask post: "Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice / Then say it's very nice / And then you run"
The Wrens - I've Made Enough Friends

Hands full of you hair and I can't stop kissing
I'm licking your lips, my hand on your hips
A rush of wonder this charm we're under might last
[...]
What's beginning? A brand-new winning, I can't stop kissing, I can't...

I've waited no end, I've made enough friends.

Ask post: Lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick...
I asked this question a few months back and the consensus appears to be the some dogs are just OCD. Ours did it for a long time after we moved into a new house and recently has cut back. I assume that she had anxiety related to the move, expressed it through her compulsive carpet licking and now is comfortable.

Over at Linerider.org there are quite a few programs for recording your tracks and in their forum (which appears to be down right now) there is a lot of good advice about how to accomplish this best.

Ask post: Help me ifgure out if I'll score brownie points by giving LP albums as art or not.
Having LPs on the wall is always a sign of coolness. I myself have a few up including the epic Aeroplane over the Sea and the righteously sweet DJ Shadow In Tune and On Time.

In terms of Johnny Cash there are really only three albums to choose

American Recordings
The Legend of Johnny Cash
American IV: The Man Comes Around.

For Dylan I'd either go with Blood on the Tracks or The Times They... [more]

Fuzzy Monster is one hundred percent right. Take a shot of amaretto and a shot of rum (or half shots if you must), drop then into a glass of beer (still in the shot glass) and chug it down. Tastes exactly like Mr. Pibb.

When you do the physical burning of the book either rip it up or flex the pages so there's lots of room for air to circulate.

Ask post: School Vouchers and Private Indoctrination
Well I don't about anyone else, but where I grew up the only private schools nearby were christian schools. So I found it very easy to be pro private school (if they want that kind of thing for their children, they can get it...) and anti-vouchers (...but I don't want my tax dollars funding it).

Ask post: What was said to Zidane?
Yet it was a French dive that caused the first goal (the replay showed little if any contact), the fouls were consistently even and Zidane obviously overreacted to a little head game. To say that Italy did not deserve the cup is ludicrous. Never mind that their second goal was disqualified for being offsides when it was obviously not...
posted to Ask Metafilter by cyphill at 2:33 PM on July 9, 2006
According to wikipedia "A player is in an offside position if 'he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second to last opponent'". The Italians were in a position that would have been considered offsides had the ball been there, but by the time the ball traveled down the field a French player had moved even with them, making the move legal. I looked for a clip of the goal but was unable to find one.

I passed a drug test only three days after smoking large amounts every day for a full year. Anyone that is saying you will fail must not know any pot heads.

To pass, all I did was drink lots of water the morning before and took some B2 Vitamins to tint my urine yellow (it looked like Mountain Dew, but they never gave it a second glance). The best example, of course, is Dude, Where's My Car?

Anyway....The Weather Man, Gladiator, The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Chinatown, Mortal Kombat, Miller's Crossing, Full Metal Jacket, Terminator, The Green Mile, Glory, The Excorcist... Basically any movie title that is the name of a character or location (examples: Donnie Darko, Forrest Gump, Chicago, Fargo etc.)

Ask post: Has a hit song ever been written or produced using Apple's Garageband software?
I'm willing to bet no, the software just isn't sophisticated enough (although a few certainly sound like they were) and it is a relatively new piece of software in the producing market. It's probably only a matter of time, though.

MeFi post: Congressional Oil spokesman goes after Citgo

thanks Godesky, I will read and return!
posted to MetaFilter by cyphill at 2:43 PM on February 26, 2006
Kwantsar, if i understand that situation correctly, Chavez is merely selling oil at less of a profit. Although the profit he is losing could be used to benefit the Venezuelans, he is not actually taking money from them per se. From what I've read so far (I have much more thanks to Godesky), this is just another step against the Washington Consensus.
posted to MetaFilter by cyphill at 2:47 PM on February 26, 2006
Er, just to explain slightly better, Chavez is showing how a government run oil industry can supply more oil at a cheaper cost to the poor versus private industries.
posted to MetaFilter by cyphill at 2:49 PM on February 26, 2006
Kwantsar, try applying that argument to any charitable action performed by governments. The U.S. Government gives billions of dollars in aid a year. They could be using this money to help the homeless or curing aids or cancer. But they aren't. Does that mean they're donating the money at the expense of those citizens?

You're looking at a cost-benifit analysis, right? Well, why don't you try examining the benifits too?
