few have attempted substantive responses to these arguments.
To require substantive responses your arguments would first require substance.
This isn't the time or place to discuss the substance of your arguments, rather we are discussing the form they take. I personally hate how you often enter into an argument, drop a quote and then leave, never to be seen in the post again (ex. 1, 2) I think it would be helpful for us all if... [more]

A recent thread on something that happened on...
I'm a +77 mage on the Mildew server and I've got another +42 level Bowel Compactor that I've been playing on the Lethargy level in the Seamstresses guild. Both of them have fire protection and squirrel nut zipper cds. I call one of them Steve and keep him under my pillow. At night, I stroke him and call him 'wiggles'.

Geez, you guys are throw this great party for Shouting and he doesn't even show up? I've got dibs on his piece of cake. (He's not trolling, he's not an asshole, he disagrees with you and he's not terribly good at expressing that)

Ok, I read this entire thread an I'm still confused. Ortho was already outed, everyone now knows his mild-mannered identity. So why stop posting under the name? Since we all know, you might as well continue. Can anyone explain this to me?

So, Ethereal Bligh, we should force everyone to post under their real name except all women and the occasional effeminate man?
On another note, things learned from this thread: don't fuck with y2karl.

EB: People get fired because of things they discuss on the net all the time (try googling "fired because of his blog"), just because you don't personally know doesn't mean it never happens. If we want people on Metafilter to discuss their lives and opinions openly then we have to be able to guarantee them some degree of anonymity. The only other solution is for people - like doctors, lawyers, politicians - who could be fired for talking about issues that concern their job, not to talk... [more]

Maybe we could cut down on all the "I'm going to this city, and I know you guys talked about cool stuff there before, but I have brown hair, are there any cool places for people with brown hair?" And maybe all the "I accidentally deleted my pictures!" and the "I have a blotch on my arm that the doctor says is melanoma, but it looks like a crooked smiley face. Is it really melanoma?"
Ask Metafilter used to be my favorite place, but it seems... [more]

I'm not railing out against dumb questions, I often like the dumb questions. I'm against the repetitive ones, I'm not going to call out people here, but you guys know that we've seen A LOT of "where can I go in New York/Chicago/Wherever". All I'm saying is that if people just check the archives then we won't have questions with two answers that just summarize previous answers with links.
And gtr, I happen to like wrap-up threads, or at least more people... [more]

Rothko, your evidence was not very good at all. So you can pull up some reviews that point out that Kubrick was critical of humanity, that doesn't mean that the scene in Full Metal Jacket was intentionally racist. In fact, when you think about the scene, it plays as more of an extension of American sensibilities onto vietnam. The woman has taken to using distorted english phrases to whore herself off to men and has adopted american stereotypes (black men are largely endowed) as her own. The... [more]

That scene is pretty well analyzed and understood. Kubrick's intentions with this scene were pretty well analyzed and understood within the context of his body of work.
If you choose not to agree, you're going to have to do a damn sight better than simply saying "wrong", because a lot of people who carefully think about this stuff for a living would simply tell you to do your homework and watch the film again.... [more]

These comments went from funny to "don't be so fucking stupid" really fast.
I have to say, as a person whose only posted derailing comments in this thread that I think in some cases it is inappropriate to reveal spoilers, but, I have to agree with loquacious here. I accidentally heard about the "twist" in Million Dollar Baby because a dick on the radio decided it was amoral and he had to warn people not to see it. I saw the movie... [more]
