Bacon Cat in the New York Times
On the Internet, nobody knows you snuffle-whuffle with your kitty-witty. Who's a bitty-kitty-witty? You are! Yes, you are! Ouch, you little bastard.

If you hold down the up- or down-arrows, the universe implodes. Or explodes, depending. Neat!

RIP, DFW
I used to work the Bookmobile at my local public library, and one of my stops was the regional jail. Saturday mornings I would roll in with a cartload of random selections and stuff the detainees had requested the week before. A lot of historical fiction, romances (for the women's block), and bestsellers. They were good readers, and the jail even let the dudes in 23-hour lockdown (the scary convicted murderers on their way to prison) out to pick a book, albeit in shackles.... [more]

Needs. More. Cowbell.
88% cowbell? Are you mad, sir? Even "Needs More Cowbell" was only run through MoreCowbell at 50% cowbell. Do you have any idea how many cowbell 88% cowbell actually is in real cowbells? The kind of cowbelling power required to maintain that much cowbell? Imagine just trying to measure that much cowbell in cows per cowbell. Try to imagine one genuine, domesticated moo-cow wearing a bell for every cowbell produced with 88% cowbell (Holsteins, not Guernseys).
And... [more]

Antpocalypse!!!
I was really hoping the the final page would reveal that the ants hadn't actually gotten any larger, but that everything else on Earth had gotten smaller for some reason.

Good Grief
Oh, dear. I have a terrible soft spot for that 1979 cartoon Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. They handled the story and characters really well, and just seeing this tiny thumbnail of Aslan's death makes me want to go back and hug my nine- or ten-year-old self: "Dummy, you read the books. You know it's going to be okay."

A massive asteroid from outer space heads straight for earth...
The year 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. Man's civilization is cast in ruin.
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn. A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super-science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice. With his companions Ookla the Mok, and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous sun-sword against... [more]

Fascination with the Dodo Bird, by Adam Savage
MetaFilter: Like Peter Falk in a falcon suit. But this is really good stuff, and it's preventing me from getting out and doing my laundry this morning, as I ponder what peculiar obsession of mine I would like to indulge, today. Thank you, Chuckles (and asavage)!

Something Of Boris
Buxton's theme is crap, but it has the better chorus:
I'd like a quantum of solace
but no more than a quantum.
I know they do big bags of solace,
but I don't want 'em.
I only want a teeny-tiny slice of solace...
before I shoot you.

More was Lost than Just the Rocket
What exactly happened after the first stage failed to separate? Did the second stage remain shut down, and the whole thing tumbled back toward the Pacific? Or did the second stage ignite regardless, resulting in what I can only imagine was a spectacular KABLOOIE?

Gomphotheres, megafauna, and anachronistic fruits
Funny story: just the other day, I'm standing in my local grocery superstore's produce section, trying to find pitted kalamata olives to make a nice Greek salad, and this extinct Madagascar sloth-lemur the size of a gorilla sidles up next to me and asks if I know where the baobab fruit is.
"Sure," I said. "See where that giant elephant bird is, over there? They're right there." The lemur smelled like Prell.
Anyway, they ended... [more]

Wasn't there a Bloodhound Gang episode where they kept getting a - - - . . . - - - signal, and the they wondered why someone was sending "Bear bear bear" in Spanish over and over, until one gang member figured out it was a distress call, and the sender had their dits and dots reversed? "Oso oso oso!" Ah, the formative television of my youth. Good times.

Nobody knows Emperors and Queens more intimately
I spend my Monday morning drinking coffee
and walking through 100 Wet Nurse woodcuts,
trying to find the perfect desktop wallpaper.
Outside, I fail to notice the rain and wind
are blowing down the last pink of the myrtles.

Times Archive,
OCR of old newsprint is understandably terrible, thus leading to lots of false and missing results for keywords. Still, this is a good good thing, and I hope somebody comes back and posts when they get the Sunday Times up, as well.

The killer is obviously an English major. Five feet would have been a pentameter, so the sixth makes it hexameter. Dactylic hexameter.
