How can I help my son get laid?
Depending on what his definition of "sex" is (and what his definition of "is" is... to harken back to a certain presidential indiscretion), this could still mean that he's having a great time. Nothing like a year of oral sex, mutual masturbation, or other fun or to make a 19 year-old happy. I'd just support him and leave this alone; I can't imagine my mom trying to convince me to have some jiggy college sex (and my mom is a sex positive cool cat of a lady, as it seems you are)... [more]

vinyasa yoga
Bikram is very pose oriented, and so it's got a rhythm where it's pose-hold-hold-hold-rest (shake out) and then into another pose (or back to the same pose if the class does that double thing). Vinyasa is "flow" yoga, where you move with every breath. It can be slow or fast, and relaxing (to the point of zoning out) or strenuous. But it's got a lot more of the breath control and internal focus than does Bikram. Some vinyasa classes are more like tai chi in their overarching design.... [more]

Seeking nice blue corduroy jacket
I would check at a high-end department store like Bloomingdale's or Nordstrom (or Needless Markups)... I saw some really nice blazers last year, including a very sharp blue corduroy jacket. Woulda been awesome with jeans, but I'm just a lowly graduate student so it really doesn't make sense to spend the rent money. The jacket was by Hugo Boss. Or maybe Zegna.

1.5k, 3 weeks, where to?
My wife (newly minted JD) and I (newly minted MS) took off for a while in 2004. We had a blast in Hawaii. We volunteered on a farm, and, because we were doing a work trade, lived there 2 months and spent about $500-$750 total (mostly on food for our non-provided meals). So that's about $1500-$2000 for the month, including 2 flights. Swim, surf, windsurf, bike, hike, etc. on your days off and your life will be pretty outstanding. Way better than it's going to be (poor poor lawyers).... [more]

Modern Renaissance man?
You can't really train to be a polymath. Sorry.
If you train (to a pretty high level of skill) in a lot of disciplines, then people might call you a polymath. If you train to a low level of skill, people might call you a dilettante. So be careful. But yeah, I've wondered about this topic, both as a matter of personal interest and as a matter of historical interest (i.e., what's the difference between the conception of well-rounded human being and *citizien* (or some... Programming neophyte looking for a language to start with. Or, what language should I learn to complete these tasks?
Python hands down. I guess Ruby gives it a run for the money (and I have zero experience with it). But Python is a very powerful scripting language with lots of support (and TONS of example code) for playing with system files and the like.
Python is also interpreted. Don't worry about what this really means... I'll tell you why it's good. You open an empty file and are trying to write a function to do something (return a list of files, or some such little chunk). You... [more]

The Israeli dream used to be "Both banks of the Jordan!" but this dream died in the 1920s (or for sure by the 1940s).

Your friend could be a "quant" and help huge financial masters of the universe continue to rule the world. It's cool work and with a PhD in math, he or she should be golden (it would help if they had programming experience, but the teams often have programmers on staff).

Looking for an engaging, well-written book that explains scientific thinking
The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, by Kuhn. (3rd-ed). It's a great place to start. It explains how science "works" in periods of normalcy and in periods of scientific revolution (with a specific, very art-and-society centric definition of scientific revolution... not just some advertising "OMG REVOLUTINARRY!" sense of the term). It's a very fast read too.

Gomphotheres, megafauna, and anachronistic fruits
Great post. I often wonder about what animal is "supposed" to be eating a particular fruit as I gorge upon it... The durian smells delicious to orangutans (it smells like rotting flesh to humans, though the fruit is delicious). Plus, they're hard to open unless you've got an opposable thumb. But what the hell is the rambutan doing? Made to be fought over by bats or hummingbirds?

Rambutan is like lychee but about 10x better.
Durian is definitely weird. But it's kind of the most amazing onion (or some other spice) but also very sweet and coconutty custard. It's custard inside. A real custard (not like bread versus breadfruit)... it was amazing, but I could see why people might not like it. My wife wouldn't go near the shit, btw.

1. Teams are good, so that you can pair younger students with older students. Teams of 4 is about the max if you want the members to actually work. You can assign teams, but it's probably faster /easier / dare-I-say funner to let the students do it themselves. And the team name, banner, colors is also a good idea.

Florida Panhandle. Get a place about 5-10 miles from the beach, kinda near a wal-mart, and you'd be paying very very cheap rent and still be able to have fun with the hicks on the beach. The beaches are beautiful there, and there's easy access to internet. Places like Dothan AL, might also work.

Someone I love needs a lawyer.
Criminal law is not monolithic and a DUI/DWI defense attorney is not going to provide the best defense in a murder or drug case and vice versa. DUI is particularly technical and scientific, and the best attorneys for those kinds of charges specialize in the science behind DUI/DWI, know a lot of specific caselaw (about proper and improper stops, proper and improper questioning, detention, coercion, etc.), and know how to use it in the courtroom. Lots (and lots) of cleats are made of synthetic leather. PVC or whatever. They look like leather from across the room, but they're made of delicious delicious petrochemicals. This is especially true in the cheaper end of the range. *Indoor* cleats might be harder to come by in PVC. Not sure.

From the UI "patterns" side of things, I'd call that the overview (or thumbnail) area of a Overview & Detail interface (see examples here). This is slighly different from a Focus Plus Context design (academic-like dfn, bad example), where, as a very crude analog of human vision, we see the detail *in its proper location* and the context is blurred but is left in the correct spatial relation to the detail.

To answer you question: anonymous posting was never very high tech. It was implemented before a lot of the changes here over the last year or so (since MF has had a development "team")... and so no, there is no record in the db where the real name is stored and then not shown. Anonymous posts are truly anonymous, unless the NSA wants to go to the trouble of reading Jessamyn's email when an anon poster contacts her and wants to reply/clarify/comment.
