My kingdom for a some narrow-calved boots!

I long for the carefree, halcyon days of my youth (or even my early 30s) in which boots regularly fit my legs snugly. Now, evidently, I am the last narrow-calved woman on the planet. Help me not have to wear the same boots for the fifth season in a row!

Filling fell out...what to do till I can see my dentist?

Dammit. It looks like part of a filling in one of my molars has fallen out... on the evening before Thanksgiving, naturally! I've already called my dentist and no one's in the office till Monday (and I don't think this counts as a bona fide emergency). What should I do to minimize the damage till I can get in to see him?

Help me convince our landlord not to rip out our front yard to replace with concrete or tile, via the argument that tile will further amplify the already significant traffic noise we get.

Need to find seat covers -- not slipcovers -- for dining room chairs.

I have a great mid-century dining set that I finally have the room to use (yay!). However, I don't like how the chairs were reupholstered in the '80s, but won't have the chance to (re-)reupholster them till next year. So I need seat covers -- NOT slipcovers! -- in the meantime. This has turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Help!

Designer (not artist) for Jeff Beck Group's "Beck-Ola"?

I need to know the cover designer for the Jeff Beck Group's album Beck-Ola. Please note that I do not need to know the artist of the cover image -- I'm aware that the painting on the cover is The Listening Room by Magritte. What I need is the name of the person who designed (or art directed) the sleeve itself. Alternatively, if there is no designer or art director credited on the sleeve, that would be helpful, tpo. Thanks!

how to deal with U.S. compensation for foreign freelance work?

I am a US citizen and resident, contracting with a European organization for a freelance project that won't be over until near the end of the year (we're still fighting over discussing the actual due date, but that's another issue). I requested a certain fee in US$. They agreed to that fee, but they want to pay it in Euros, based on today's exchange rate. Is this common practice?

Bust a streetlight, out past midnight!

Big Star, named after a Memphis grocery chain and arguably the most influential cult band in the pop pantheon (not to mention composers of "That '70s Show" theme song, as rendered by Cheap Trick), releases a new studio album on Rykodisc on Sept. 27. Fronted by the legendary Alex Chilton (yes, the same one) and Chris Bell (Jody Stephens and Andy Hummell rounded out the original lineup), Big Star reformed in 1993 with the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, and have played live off and on since -- but this is the band's first release of new material since the dark, brooding Third/Sister Lovers in 1978. O my soul! Power pop fans rejoice!

Where to start for reading classic crime/noir fiction?

I'm a pretty dedicated reader, but one of the genres I haven't explored much is classic crime/noir fiction. (I do love James Ellroy, but that's about all I've read.) I know that the big guns are Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Jim Thompson. Any suggestions as to which titles to start with (The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man, and The Grifters all come to mind first, of course, because of the films), as well as other authors to consider? I'd also be happy to entertain suggestions of really high quality true crime, though my hunch is that In Cold Blood is probably unbeatable.
