and oh crap, I just saw that jonson's account is disabled. I just thought he wasn't around much these days. He's my Crowded House concert pal (seriously: some enterprising science-y type needs to look into creating an alternate source of energy by channeling the giddiness jonson and I generate when we're in the same room talking about the songwriting genius of Neil Finn), so I'll have to email him to see what's up.

Colorado - Could go either way. Huge fundie population.

Not exactly. There's a big fundie population in specific pockets (Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, etc.), but Denver/Boulder have always been predominantly liberal, and the entire front range is generally more liberal than it's been in quite some time, due to changing demographics. Also, Focus on the Family aside, Western-state conservatism has not

I bet Mr. Rogers would like that story.

Seriously. I'm not trying to be snarky or anything. I just think he'd like it.

Doesn't matter; the Wilson Sisters still rule the universe! And three-quarters of Van Halen have pitbull-lipstick stains around the bases of their wangs!

Q: Have you tried winning over the object of your affection with DELICIOUS BACON?

If "NO," please try DELICIOUS BACON first before posting your question to AskMe.

If "YES," then he/she is obviously immune to DELICIOUS BACON'S charms. You should feel free to DTMFA.

MeTa post: the rape of Google
I was just a kid who had only read his name; if I had never actually heard it spoken out loud, how was I to know? The shame, it still burns!
And don't get me started on Wagner...

Don't feel bad, Alvy; it was years before I learned that Yeats and Keats don't rhyme (thankfully before I declared my English major in college, however).

MeTa post: Yup. I'm actually back.
W00t! Miss Lynnster walks among us!

I'm snowed under till Labor Day weekend (and then, after that, am only available on Sept. 4 because: Sept. 2 and 3 = PAUL WELLER AT THE WILTERN!!!! and Sept. 5 = leaving town for a week). I can also get together after I get back on Sept 12.

People should feel free to disregard my fussy schedule, though, if something else is better for y'all.

If it is an evening I could go, though, I'll toss out the suggestion of the Roost (on Los Feliz Blvd., just where Los Feliz turns into Glendale) -- we met up there a few years ago when Jessamyn was in town and a splendid time was had by all (cheap drinks, good jukebox, and a post-meetup 'do at Jumbo's Clown Room).
posted to MetaTalk by scody at 1:28 PM on August 18, 2008
(And the Roost is good for eastsiders and we Valley Girls, no?)
posted to MetaTalk by scody at 1:28 PM on August 18, 2008
In my experience, the Roost also gets crowded later on the weekends (slumming hipsters, begone!), but is generally fine during the week and on the early side (7-ish) on the weekends in terms of being able to get tables and carry on conversations.
posted to MetaTalk by scody at 4:15 PM on August 18, 2008
Oh, and one more important note about the Roost: CASH ONLY. They are not impressed by your silly credit or debit cards. For those who fail to come with a pocketful of pretty green, there's an ATM at the gas station across the street.
posted to MetaTalk by scody at 4:17 PM on August 18, 2008
no need to whisper about enjoying the Valley, MissLynnster! Well, actually, the only reason to be quiet about it is to keep word from getting out that whole chunks of it are actually totally awesome.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE, LOS ANGELES PEOPLE. YOU CAN REST ASSURED THAT THE VALLEY SUCKS! YEP, IT'S A WHOLE VALLEY-WORTH OF SUCKAGE. NO, DO NOT EVEN BOTHER COMING OVER THE HILL TO SEE FOR YOURSELF! IT REALLY DOES SUCK! PLEASE TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... [more]

Drat, I sidebarred this meetup, but somehow managed to create a link specfically to ob's comment about starting a new thread for a downtown meetup.

Admins, please hope me! This is what happens when I try to juggle my metafilter life with editing a freakin' 464-page book.

Praise jebus, my book is FINALLY done... all 464 pages of it, exactly 12 months after I received the first essay to start editing. W00t!

So what this means is that I'm very much inclined to come out and celebrate, but having just walked in the door, I also suddenly feel very much inclined to collapse. So consider me about 50/50 for actually making it.

And don't forget: cash only!

MeTa post: Suddenly Nicky
Yay! From one chick who has to watch her Tg levels to another, it's great to have you back and in good spirits, Nicky.

Speaking of radioactivity, I remember the first time they gave me a big fat dose of I-131 (though my dose wasn't quite as high as yours) -- I decided that it's kind of like being a temporary superhero, but with one really irritating power. For example, among the cautionary instructions I was given (which are additionally unsettling to hear when... [more]

are you surviving ThyCa too? Or Graves disease?

ThyCa here, too -- in remission for a decade! (So apparently I'm officially in the "win" column medically, as my endo told me.)

The docs say to flush two or three times when going to the bathroom. Mischievous thoughts come to mind like what could I do with radioactive poop or pee? and what would happen if I just flushed once? Would my neighbors fry slowly?

"Oh, your surgery is over! So you're getting better now, right?"

The key to answering this question is a small matter of some simple preparation.

1) Take to wearing turtlenecks or scarves.

2) When someone announces that you're ALL! BETTER!, pull down the collar or scarf to reveal your neck scar, on either side of which you have attached two perfect Frankenstein bolts.... [more]

Oh, I know -- people recoiled when they saw my scar after my thyroid surgeries too (I had two, back-to-back). People also recoiled after I had double-jaw surgery (I had unusually brutal bruising and swelling, due to abnormal bleeding brought on by then-undiagnosed hemophilia). I literally made friends and family members cry involuntarily when I first got home from the hospital, and then had mothers shielding their kids from me for the first couple of months when I was in public....all of which... Implying that the girlfriend might miss a pill implies that she's human.

Speaking as someone who remembers to take medication every morning by putting it right next to my toothbrush, I read it as implying that she lacks good dental hygiene. But perhaps that's just me.

Among the great pleasures at Metafilter is the ability to sift through a user's comments. You can learn a lot about someone that way -- their areas of interest and expertise; their willingness to give useful advice in the green (and not just seek it out for themselves); their sense of humor and perspective; basically, their overall interest in contributing meaningfully to the community.

And so it was this morning that I got up, made a nice cup of tea, checked in at this... [more]
