I like their approach to this, and their POV seems to be from a usability standpoint rather than an engineering standpoint. I'll give it a shot when it comes out.

Google may become evil, and I don't know that this is a step in that direction, but I will always love them for making Sketchup free. Even if we ever break up.

Permission makes it art? No, in the case of the De Kooning, it makes it collective art. Rauschenberg certainly didn't need permission to make what he did art.
Or: buff Radtke's buffs.

He's also apparently clean too. Hopefully he can keep the momentum going. He wasn't able to do that the 4 years prior when Colin Farrell got him a 2000 dollar prize for getting him to a radio station. Nice to hear at least one good story. I wonder how many failures there are to this one success?

Maybe they can make a good story about societal mind control and attempts to make people toe the line. It might even be good. But it won't be "The Prisoner". It'll be something else trying to pretend to be "The Prisoner", and not succeeding.
I can't agree with this more. "The Prisoner" was an amazing coming together of writing, acting and filming that told a story which not only fit the time, but also has stood up well... [more]

Ohh, it made a huge impression on me as well from watching the series on PBS in the 70's. Rover freaked me the fuck out. There was a building in downtown Sacramento that had this huge ball on top of it, I imagine for an antenna of some sort, and I always thought of it as Rover, and always watched it carefully as we drove past in case it came bounding off the building after me.
The original series was so brilliant and original, that a remake just seems... I don't know...... [more]

You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write 'Fuck you' right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetary, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say 'Holden Caulfield' on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say 'Fuck you.' Billys and Charleys
As someone who has a passing interest in ancient artifacts, this is a fascinating story, and especially because archaeologists were fooled by these. They are quite crude to say the least. What they've unknowingly done is created artifacts for future generations to marvel at. They've created historical items, but not in the way they intended. Great stuff!

Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
For those of you not old enough to have been there, the prevailing thought on the Quayle selection was that he was assassination insurance. People would think twice about killing the President when they saw who was next in line. There were no age or disease issues with George Bush, so the fact that Quayle was inexperienced and generally seen as a silver spooned buffoon wasn't really an issue. He did provide a young face to the ticket, and that was an advantage to counter Bush's experience.

grapefruitmoon, no, I'm not splitting hairs with you at all. Gerald Ford is just a bad example to use for anything Presidential since he never had to run for the national office he held, and when he did run, he lost. He was pretty much put in to be a patsy for a corrupt administration, and the fact he was a male model was probably to his benefit in getting confirmed. A dumb pretty boy was preferable to a jowly schemer.

And that probably applies to most people in the 200-300k range, for example. Especially for younger workers, it's unlikely they have accumulated enough capital to live without their wages.
And this is based on extensive research I'm sure. Certainly you didn't pull this out of your ass or anything.
Of course 200-300k is barely a living wage where you live. Try looking around at the rest of the country.

There's something to be said for young children being more open emotionally to music. When I was in the fifth grade I started playing Saxaphone in the school band. It was a squeaky squawky affair directed by Mr. Luck who traveled around the school district in a yellow school bus converted to be a mobile music room for individual lessons.... [more]

Mutant's reporting of housing prices shows that the numbers themselves mean nothing without looking at the reasons behind them, and how they might relate to the national figures. I don't know much about the other regions, but Grand Junction, Colorado is going through an oil and gas boom right now, so of course prices will rise there as people move in for the jobs. Just more proof that real estate is extremely local, and difficult to make national guesses based on local numbers.

Watching that video, he had a pretty crappy start, then after about 20 meters ran like he had a rocket up his ass. Amazing. Rhetorical Questions
Reagan is known as the "Great Communicator", but having heard him then, it's curious he got this title. What he was was a good actor, and could be believable, until they had statements clarifying and correcting what he said. When he had a script, he could follow it, but when it was off the cuff, he wasn't so good. Our current President is worse that way. It was during the debates with Mondale that I realized that Reagan had Alzheimers. One particular question sealed it when he forgot... [more]

ZachsMind, perhaps it's quaint, but people who vote here in the states have more of a voice than some random dude in a European country. This awesome. I've always wanted to do something like this. Travel to a place like North Korea with it's totalitarian regime, and where what you're allowed to see and photograph is totally scripted. I think that what they want to portray is as important to see as what is really true. Primarily I think of it in terms of a photographic challenge where you're taken some place, and you do the best you can. There are some really great photographs in this set.

Seems to me that the whole South Ossetia part of this is a huge red herring that languagehat and ornate insect are splitting hairs over.
