Ask post: Finding the Walls to Breakthrough
As mentioned above, neuroscience seems to be the ripest candidate for a grand scale revolution. For supporting evidence see this talk: Toward the First Revolution in the Mind Sciences.

Ask post: How To Learn Psychology
You mention a couple books in the field of positive psychology. There was a recent post about the now-famous Harvard positive psychology course with a link to the lecture videos. I've watched the lectures, and while they don't talk much about experimental methods they're well worth a view.

Ask post: Cool/Interesting videos (similar to TED.com) on the Internet?
MITWorld has an impressively broad collection of talks, most of which are intended for a public audience. I think you'll find the quality of the speakers to be unparalleled.

Ask post: Best discussion/debate sites
By specifying minimal human moderation, do you mean that the balance of moderation is carried out by the users rather than the administrators? Systems that rely wholly on user moderation seem to scale poorly.

If you're aiming for the level of discourse of the MeFamily, I'd offer that you've already hit on one of the most sustainable discussion models on the web.

Ask post: Please recommend informative documentaries or educational videos that can be found on-line
There's an ongoing thread at Something Awful with some fantastic documentary and educational video suggestions.

Ask post: Chai Tea fix
You can mix all the ingredients for masala chai ahead of time. Grind the spices and add them to the loose tea. Grate some ginger, dry it out, and add it too.

A rounded teaspoon of this mixture makes for a nice strong brew.

Ask post: Looking for well-designed university sites
The simple, clean, and lightweight design ethic works well for research groups. I made this site for a physics research group.

Ask post: XPExplorer Views
I've recently been using xplorer2 lite, which manages folder views manually. The reason I mention it is because it streamlines MANY other functions. It has tabbed browsing and dual panes for moving files around. It remembers the last selected file in each folder.

These and other features save so much time if you find yourself clicking through the same folder trees repeatedly.

Ask post: What's your favorite little-known soda pop?
Two rather unconventional sodas are favourites of mine:
Rivella is made in Switzerland from milk protein. It resembles ginger ale, and has an indescribable taste.
Malta is a malted beverage made by Guinness, brewed in Nigeria of all places. It can be commonly found in Malaysia as well.

Ask post: Which program do you use to manage music and podcasts on your computer and iPod?
For the bleeding edge in music management you might try Songbird. It's the latest project from the creators of winamp.

There's already an add-on for iPod support. Songbird is based on the mozilla platform, so add-ons are just as easy to use as in firefox.

Ask post: Give me the finger
I've been wondering what the name of this symbol is for years. It's often used as a section divider in literature. Like the pointy finger, it seems to be a timeless piece of graphic design.

Maddeningly, amtho's link to P22 offers another example but no reference!

(Apologies if it's not kosher to add a question within a thread, I couldn't tell from reading the posting guidelines.)... [more]

Ask post: Help me save the world
It looks like you're in good company here, I'm really impressed with by the response so far.

I can add a few ideas specific to Vancouver:
-participate in the city's EcoDensity planning meetings (ongoing)
-become involved with APEG (not just for civil engineers!) and bring about change in the organization
-help organize events such as the recent sustainability cafes
-BCSEA is very active in public policy and in developing... [more]

Ask post: How to keep notes for writing history
Consider releasing portions of your research in a blog or some other bite-size media. This strategy forces you to add context to your notes and edit them for readability, which could be helpful when you go back to them six months later.

Ask post: What songs do you recommend about survival against odds or in the face of adversity?
Jimmy Eat World's The Middle. I feel like this song could make me feel positive about any situation.

Ask post: Animal Builder
Wings 3D is relatively simple to learn and free to use. It would require some proficiency to model biological shapes, but this is true of most modelling software.

Z-brush employs a very different building process, letting you 'paint' objects. It is likely going to be the most intuitive starting point for a beginner, but it carries a $500 price tag.

Both of these programs are available for Mac and Windows.... [more]

Ask post: German language novel on nuclear proliferation
Copenhagen does fit my description but it's not the work I'm speaking of. I missed out on seeing Copenhagen at the Playhouse in Vancouver, I hope it returns.

sueinnyc, Die Physiker looks like it fits the bill! Thank you for the links, I look forward to reading it. Seeing as Die Physiker is also a play I will have to do a search to see when and where it has been produced.
posted to Ask Metafilter by FissionChips at 10:20 PM on December 1, 2005
The link from Wikipedia to the Literary Encyclopedia confirms that I was thinking of Die Physiker. It describes Friedrich Dürrenmatt's motivation for writing the play, and that the play went on to have worldwide success after premiering in Germany in 1962.

Ask post: creating scientific diagrams
I don't have experience with biology diagrams, but I'll suggest Dia as a general purpose tool. A windows version can be found here.

Ask post: Tag based web file manager?
I recently did a quick search do solve exactly your problem. It yielded this: Snif.

I haven't used it to add descriptions, but it seems to have that functionality. It's a php script you drop into your file directory, no setup required. It allows navigation of its root folder as well as subfolders.

Ask post: What CD do you currently love.
I'll go first.
I came across Tumi and the Volume's album "At the Bassline" through a south-african friend. Their sound is a blend of hip-hop, instrumental and soul.

I like them for their powerful and original sound. What draws me back again and again though is the complexity of Tumi's lyrics.
You can listen to them here.
