Fool's World Map
Actually, I think Canada is bigger than Europe - or so it appears to be on this map. All maps distort, of course, but in squarish maps it tends to be similar across similar latitudes, so the distorition making Canada bigger would also make Europe bigger.
If you look at a Peters Map, such as this one, the two appear rather equal in size.

Nous sommes toutes ...quoi?
I read a great post somewhere regarding this essay, and I thought I should share it:
My background: I am a US and Norwegian dual citizen. I grew up bilingual, with one parent from each country, and have lived 18 years in Norway and 13 in the US - all the while visiting "the other" on vacations.
I know many of the Norwegian authors, media and incidets he refers to - including his tiff with a Norwegian farner... [more]

When One Is Enough
I find her choices absolutely normal. A fetus is just a fetus, no more.
I also wonder what your position on abortions would be if you would have lived in Communist Romania, where any method of protection (condoms, pill) and abortions were outlawed, thus making illegal (and through dreadful methods) abortions the norm. Some women had up to 15-20 abortions. Some died because of the methods they used.
Abortion is a normal and logical right. It has... [more]

Allawi shot inmates in cold blood, say witnesses

Interview with Paul McGeough
Paul, as you've also made clear in your article, Prime Minister Allawi has flatly denied this story. Why then is the Herald so confident about publishing it?
PAUL McGEOUGH, 'SYDNEY MORNING HERALD' AND 'AGE' FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT: Well it's a very contentious issue. What you have is two very solid eyewitness accounts of what happened at a... [more]

Croatian Properties for Sale
'Normal' apartments in Bucharest do not go over 25.000€ (2 rooms), 35.000€ (3 rooms).
My 4 rooms apartment, heavily modified, would go for about 80.000€. It's around 100 sq. meters (1 076 sq. foot).
So, I'd say there's something special about that apartment in the front post.
/on preview - if indeed it's only an apartment.

Saddam Hussein
Nit: Wasn't Ceaucescu hauled out of bed in the dead of night by his [formerly] own secret police and shot in some warehouse, while everything was filmed with a cheap VHS video cam?
Nope, but close.
Ceausescu was captured after he ran with a helicopter (not while sleeping), was taken to an ad-hoc tribunal, where he was summarily judged and afterwards sentenced to be executed, punishment which he received in the courtyard of... [more]

The 25 Member EU
Restrictions or no restrictions, drawbacks or no drawbacks, there is nary a reasonable Romanian who will complain about any steps taken to integrate with the rest of Europe and the rest of the world.
That's true, but most of them down here that will be affected by the entry will be the rural folk. We desperately need to fix things up in our agricultural system, and our current government did not do much.
Basically, in... [more]

Croatia is in the process of becoming a candidate and is expected to join in 2007 with Bulgaria and Romania
Ljubljana, from what I understand, Croatia cannot be expected to join before 2009.

Might I suggest Spam Gourmet for those who are afraid of posting their actual e-mail address ?
This way you won't have to create a separate Yahoo account and you'll know who's spamming you.

Girl to sue over detention
I've always wondered how this system works in the US. In Romania such a 'punishment' could be considered kidnapping, resulting in a possible conviction of 5 to 12 years in jail.
