Good tailor/seamstress in west downtown Toronto?
Yes, it is. There are lots and lots of places - it's not that there's nowhere to go, I was just looking for a personal endorsement. Thanks for the recommendation.

He probably just doesn't realize yet that he can bark. One day he'll discover it, and then you'll have to train him not to do it. Nothing to worry about - just be thankful for the silence while it lasts.

dobbs - I don't like dance clubs or modern dance shows, and there's no way I can pass as a hipster if that's necessary to fit in at a place. Other than that, I want to experience a little bit of everything.

Another spa suggestion would be Kara's. I don't think they have a liquor license, so maybe the Remedy place would be more fun, but I do think they have a good reputation.

A salad that enu would die for
Oh, geez, thanks jozxyqk. Not being Jewish myself, I didn't know that. I definitely don't want to offend anyone, so while I have to prepare it in a non-kosher kitchen, and I think most people will be pretty laid back, let's assume that fairly strict kosher rules apply. Thanks again. *Hits gentile head*

One person's not flying will not cause any fewer planes to be flown and will have absolutely zero environmental impact.
Well, with less weight on board, the plane will burn less fuel.
For me, I wouldn't stop flying. There are some things I'm willing to give up for the environment. Driving to work is one of those. But modern planes burn less fuel per passenger-mile than even very efficient cars with only one person in them. So... [more]

Roommate owes me money. What do I do?
I don't understand why you even agreed to pay for half of the cable if you never watch TV, but that's another story.
Tell him that it's time to pay up, because it's starting to affect your finances. Make that clear. Ask him whether he can pay you, how much he can pay you, and get him to agree on a timetable. If he says he can pay half now, half after he gets his next paycheque, then that's probably okay. But if he seems to be giving you the runaround, cut off the cable... [more]

It sounds to me like you need stitches, but I'm not a doctor, so I can't say for sure. I think you're risking infection by leaving it as it is. I wouldn't want to leave it for a week - it could heal improperly. I'd get it checked out soon.

Probability and Truth
Using the method jessamyn points out, I think that the formula would be:
.00001x.98 / [.9999x.02 - (.00001x.98)]
Which when I do it gives me .048%.

Er, I screwed that up, I should have added the values in the numerator and gotten .049%.
Also, here's the formula for checking.
Let A be the incidence of disease in the general population
Let B be the probability of a correct diagnosis
A x B / (1-A x 1-B) + (A x B)
So, the numerator becomes the number of people who are correctly diagnosed as positive, and the denominator is the total... [more]

And, again, if I'm thinking of my BEDMAS rules, I think I should express that formula:

I think that's correct, what do other people think? Sorry, it's been a while since I took any math.

Canadian source for red (salmon) caviar
Try the Russian food booth at the Halifax market every Saturday morning. All kinds of Russian food - maybe they have decent caviar, too, or know how to get it. In that case, you may want to try Caviar Direct for good-quality Canadian caviar or the Caviar Centre for either Canadian or imported. Both located in Toronto, looks like both will ship. Keep in mind that there are sustainability issues with true Russian caviar.

How to lower the environmental impact of the work place?
Keep the temperature to 78 or 79 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. It's insane that office buildings are colder in the summer than the winter, and it wastes a lot of energy.
Make sure that lights are turned out at night. Lights on at night in high office buildings both waste energy and kill migratory birds who fly into the windows.

Glad to hear you're going. I think it's the right decision. The thing is, while it might be awkward just to show up on your own to a family ceremony (scratch that - it would be awkward), if a group of colleagues are going then it's quite appropriate to go along with the group and will be appreciated.

It's because I'm brown, isn't it?
You're probably not off-base. This is the sort of racism-lite, born of ignorance, that there's a lot of. Maybe it's just a reaction to the fact that they hardly ever see brown people around. It doesn't mean that people mean badly, but it is fairly clueless. I think the best way to respond is with a little humour - "Yeah, all brown people are cousins, didn't you know?" That can draw their attention to the fact that they're being dolts, without making them get too defensive.

Complaints like this can take over your life. When you find another job, just move on and put this behind you. It's not worth being involved for months or years afterwards, especially if they try to take you to court out of revenge over slander or something. Anyone been to the Daily Show taping recently?
Look at it this way: everyone has the same notice saying 3:30-4:00. Everyone is going to be a pretty serious fan, and no one is going to want to miss the show. So as many people as possible will try to make it early, as long as they're not too averse to standing in line. If they suggest 4pm as the outside time, that's because they're used to turning away people who don't make it by that time. Dude, you're going to the Daily Show! That's so cool! Sell now or pay later?
Trade it in or sell it. What are the advantages of continuing to drive it? You can spend more time saving for a new car, but in the meantime you're spending twice as much on fuel as you need to, and if you plan on leasing or financing, that could go to payments on a new car. Your wording is sort of strange - "a work commute there" - do you commute or not? To flush or not to flush
A little late in here, I know, but a useful statistic: a cleanup in Halifax, Nova Scotia last fall of 125 metres (410 feet) of shoreline netted 124 plastic tampon applicators. Halifax is just now preparing to treat its sewage, which is unusually gross for such a large city, and when it starts, most of this stuff will clog the plants instead of the shoreline. Still, that's one tampon applicator per metre of shoreline. That's really disgusting. Please don't flush your tampons.

Well, a lot of headphones are designed to fit in their respective ears. More generally, I think the idea is that if you're listening to the same music in different locations, you want the same experience - that left-channel guitar or drum or whatever should always come from the left. And it certainly makes a difference if you've got a movie plugged in, rather than just music.
