MeTa post: Don't ask me!!
When someone asks a question about what song was being played in this movie or whatnot, wouldn't it be rude or just useless to respond with, "That sounds like a music question. You know who could answer that? A DJ!"

If you think this is a good analogy, you don't understand how the law works.

MeTa post: We'll all need lobotomies to keep from shouting "Don't do it!"
I was just thinking, this isn't going to last long, when along comes Jessamyn deleting the kinds of comments anyone seriously thinking about this needs to hear. In fact, I'm not sure that this is a serious question, which is why I figured it was going to go. It's possible to take the guidelines WAY to seriously. If someone came along and asked, "What's the right way to slit my wrists," would you delete responses that didn't answer the question?

MeTa post: from a comfortable turret
You're a junior in a liberal arts program and you think you've got a career?

35 years after having had a vasectomy, you want children? Have you picked up a new trophy wife, or something, HuronBob?

Wow, someone's got his panties in a knot over this. I guess we hit some sort of nerve.

Yeah, that could have been a lot clearer.... [more]

Listen carefully: this can be the sign of a serious problem with your computer. It tends to occur around this time of year. I would recommend that you backup your data as quickly as possible and do a full hard drive format and OS reinstall. Email's in profile if you need some help being walked through it.

MeTa post: pathetic insensitive
I should be allowed to express my view also. And I am. And you've heard it.

Uh...okay. Did anyone ever suggest you're not allowed to express your view? Is there some reason that the fact that you find this offensive should concern other members of this site? Or are you just wasting our time with your precious, offended self, that secretly pines for the days when blasphemers like this would have been strung up like they deserved?... [more]

What a ridiculous callout. Identify the particular stereotypes you think are at work here, or stop being so over-sensitive.

MeTa post: Relevance and hating the US
Personally, I'm all for the US annexing Canada--US politics would swing noticeably to the left.

Americans would move to the left in response to terror attacks from Canadian insurgents? I doubt it.

Here's hoping you have some ideas...

Here's an idea, 0bvious: stop intellectually masturbating in AskMe.

It's always painful to me to see an idiot who thinks he's a genius. Eventually life disabuses these people and they end up flipping burgers or operating on brains or some other kind of manual labor, but until then, they corner you at cocktail parties or on the telephone or in AskMe and spew forth their torrents of vapidity.

Are you kidding? Many of them end up with tenured positions.

Fucking Awesome.

It's true, there is almost sociological value in reading a question like this one. It's fascinating to see just how self-absorbed in their own pseudo-intellectual bullshit people can become when they spend too much time in "critical theory" academic echo-chambers.

MeTa post: Shooty McGunpants
This is one of the stupidest callouts I can remember. Dangerous to public health? Take it up with the government - the guy's asking about a legal activity. If you don't approve, DON'T CLICK ON THE DAMN THREAD.

And one whackjob murderer doesn't make it any more or less a legitimate question (hell, if anything, how do I arm myself for personal protection in this gun-ridden country is even more relevant now).

I LOVE that the first response is "dump her." Ah AskMe, how I love thee, you are so predictable.

In my own defence, it was not an automatic reaction to someone else's relationship problem - it really sounds like his fiancee is pathologically spendthrift and he's letting himself be taken for a ride. I mean, the guy dropped out of college because she won't pay her share of the bills. I think this advice pops up so often on AskMe because so... [more]

not reading every single news article

Are you kidding? I agree with the poster, this was widely reported and not all that difficult to figure out, if you'd been willing to put five minutes into research before cluttering up AskMe out of laziness.

This is way too common on AskMe (along with long-winded, boring chatfilter outpourings about relationship breakdowns). GFE - Google Fucking Exists. Use it. For instance, the first... [more]

because information balanced with intelligent opinion is more illuminating than just reading and accepting news media at face value.

You mean uninformed opinion, speculation? Because unless some mefites have access to the inner thinking of the British security services, that's all that it would be. Though it's good to see that people will never give up their sophomoric pretensions to superiority merely because they mindless question anything they read in newspapers.

Yeah, that's all we need to do. Attract the teen crowd. That would really make this a better site.

What do you mean, Afroblanco? joshuak, for instance, has been a valuable member of this community. It's one thing if you're in conversation with someone. But if we have to "be polite" in print, lest we offend someone somewhere, we've sacrificed freedom and debate to irrational sensitivity. If people don't like what someone has to say, they don't have to read it; or they can write something in response.

I mean, what's next:

Christ didn't really rise from the dead today.

Wouldn't want to offend Christians.... [more]

Essentially, if you're going to go knowingly offend people, it should either be in making a point directly about them

By this standard, the comment you objected to qualified. It made a point about the illiberal censoriousness of many Muslim countries (and how we wouldn't want Metafilter to take their offence into account).

Hear, hear, cribcage. pieoverdone, since when were we obliged to marry people who want fundamentally different things in life than we want, just because we started dating them?

No, wait, you know what, I'm not going to argue with you over this. But you should listen to what others have said: you've come across as bitter, intolerant, irrational and a little bit crazy in this thread. I can only imagine what your deleted comments were like.

Maybe this is taking this too seriously, but I think this really shows contempt for Metafilter and for the effort that Matt puts into the site. It's also sort of ironic that it would actually take more effort to post the question to AskMe that it would to Google it.

But the fact that jimbler is a double idiot is beside the point - it's the disregard for the simple, clear guidelines, and the waste of other people's time that's the problem.... [more]

The post wasn't lambasted because people disagreed with the viewpoint of the poster, it was because it linked to an article that was not only not the best of the web, but biased, dishonest and false.

I'm torn. XQUZYPHYR is right that the post was inflammatory, and McBain's just aggravating things in the thread with comments like this. So cool it a bit, McBain, please.

But he's got a point that he shouldn't have to put with lazy, baseless denunciations without any evidence to support them. But then again, what's the internet for?
posted to MetaTalk by Dasein at 10:08 PM on March 8, 2004
Of course, McBain, by being so inflammatory in your post you've diverted discussion and attention from Krugman's article. One would think you could have posted a toned-down version of your preemptive rebuttal as a comment.

Candidates have to meet certain standards - including popularity in the polls and fundraising - before the Secret Service will give them protection. I doubt that Nader's going to meet those standards (I don't think he did last time).

And I certainly don't think that Matt is going to have a problem just because evidence of Tlogmer's idiocy and bad taste is linked to from Metafilter.
