Why are there so many cats in Istanbul?
I noticed this in Tel Aviv and (especially) Jerusalem when I visited. To give people a sense of just how many cats we're talking about here - they're nearly as pervasive as squirrels are in American cities.

Color generated 3D effects on screen, just me?
... any visual stimulus projects slightly different images into each eye because the eyes are in different places on the head. By the process of stereo vision, the disparity between these images is used by the brain to infer distance. Because each eye is actually aimed slightly askew when we look straight ahead, the lens of the eye acts like a prism. Incoming light is thus broken into the colors of the spectrum, which are projected to slightly different locations on the retina. The... [more]

Take off your glasses and the effect goes away.
You meant to say "remove your corneas and lenses".
(Not recommended.)

You just had to disappoint us all by letting on that the parrots are only metaphorical, didn't you.

Starting a PhD, time to start a lab notebook?
YES! I'm a 4th year in cognitive neuroscience (mid level vision). I wish I'd started keeping a notebook years ago. Right now my "notebook" is mostly my extremely detailed checkin notes to my SVN repository, which is nice because it's not decoupled from my actual workflow.

Can you short a connection using a staple?
Just curious - wouldn't it have been faster to just... try?
Possible outcomes: It works. Question answered. ... or, it doesn't work. Question answered.

Visual Alarm
Low tech solution: when they're not at the PC, have the screen be black. The alarm can consist of the full screen flashing rapidly. Install a mirror to make it more visible from their positions.

What scientific software do I use?
Pretty much nthing the above. I used to use LaTeX until it became painfully clear that nobody at all uses it any more. Everyone uses Word - no journals want LaTeX any more. For analysis, I mostly use Matlab and/or R, and then make things pretty in Illustrator.
I use CiteULike for references. Bibim is a simple Mac app that takes a Bibtex file and turns it into an Office 2007/8 format sources.xml.

Free CSV to TAB?
Perl is overkill. Don't confuse the issue. This can be done in any text editor, even notepad.

Routers not working properly
I've owned 4 WRT54G routers over the years. Every single one has had this issue.
About 6 months ago, I purchased a Motorola SBG900. I haven't had to reset it in all that time.

How long of a trip? If you're going for more than a year, I'd invest in a portable hard drive. If not, just buy cards.

I feel just fine acting silly around strangers.
You're not acting silly. You're acting like someone who wants to act silly, but doesn't really know how, and ends up acting like an annoying idiot.
Sorry.

Which (Verizon) Mobile Phone to Choose?
A vote against the vx8600. It looks nice, but I've found it too small and very very slippery - hard to even hold without a case.
A friend has the W385 - low end, but very sturdy and grippy.

I'm a hurtin' skeptical wuss.
I'm a grad student in neuroscience at a major hospital. My adviser is a MD PhD neurologist. Every week, there's a morning case conference where all the neurology attendings and residents get together and present all the new cases that have come in in the past week.
Every single week with little or no exception, one of those cases is someone who died or became a paraplegic due to the actions of a chiropractor.

promise me my stuff won't be deleted at the next dot-com bust?
I recommend Jungle Disk. The actual data gets stored on Amazon's servers. I'm pretty confident that even if Amazon tanks, they'll do it in sufficiently slow motion that you'd be able to get your data back first.

I probably have a tapeworm in my corpus collosum.
