I'll be in San Francisco in two weeks (Aug 30-Sep 1). What are some geeky things to see (without a car)? I've already covered the Exploratorium and City Lights several times, but that's the sort of thing my tastes run towards.

Somewhere, a while ago, somewhere on the internet (here? BoingBoing? somewhere else?) was posted a PDF (I think) of a cookbook (?) from the 19th century (?) that had various recipes used by kitchens in wealthy households. Somewhere in that cookbook was a detailed description of how to store turtles (for soup) long-term (cool, mostly dry) in stacked boxes. Please hope me find it!

I want to make a promotional mug that has a picture of a brain on it, where some 'brain activations' appear when the mug is heated. I've seen color-changing mugs like this around, but I can't seem to find out where to get them made.

My aunt's family has been listening to the same Christmas tape (as in, the same physical tape) repeatedly for about 25 years. The tape was originally made by dubbing from vinyl. I'd like, as a gift, to remaster the whole thing, but I need help identifying all the song versions.

What happened to character-by-character chat? I miss the intimacy, subtle nuances of meaning, and most of all the ability to interrupt one another and complete one another's sentences that was inherent in old-school unix 'talk'. How can I replicate this nowadays?

What do all capital letters in legal documents signify? Many legal documents contain stretches of normal text alternating with stretches that are in all-caps. Is there a legal meaning to it? What would be the ramifications of printing the all-caps portion in normal capitalization - i.e., could that render the document ineffective?

GPS with extremely large memory? I'm looking for something pretty much exactly like the
Sony GPS-CS1 (reviewed
here )... but that will allow me to download the data to a Mac when I'm done. (Though the GPS-CS1 mounts as a regular drive on a PC, it won't on a Mac...)

well. The

and equations.

Like many people, I have a "best of" directory on my web site where I keep various files I find on the net that I want to keep around in case the original host goes away. Right now it's just a
raw directory of files, mostly with their original often cryptic filenames. I'd like some kind of drop-in file manager that would let me easily add descriptions and tags. Users could click on tags to narrow the listing to, say, just "flash toys" or "zero wing spinoffs".

On a Windows machine, both Firefox and IE by default map mouse button 4 (the "thumb" button) to the "back" command. How can this be done properly on a Macintosh? The usual answers like "use USB Overdrive-X or the Intellimouse driver software" have serious problems associated with them.

After twenty years of twice-weekly migraines, Topamax has halted them completely for me; nary even a minor headache in three months. People with narcolepsy (and others with less severe sleep issues) have found a wonder drug in Provigil. Severe snorers, suffering from sleep apnea, arise from sleep studies on CPAP wondering what this strange "awake" feeling is. Cataracts disappear and vision returns. And then there's that other drug, so beloved by spammers.
What happens when a medical treatment truly changes your life? How does your life change when you've grown used to a condition over the span of years, and then in a matter of days it lifts? Any stories?
