Im looking for a graphics tablet
Wacom. Wacom. Wacom. This can't be stressed enough.
The "Bamboo Fun" is fine for getting started with graphics work, but if any of the Intuos line fits your definition of reasonable price, the added features (better pressure resolution, tilt detection, added pens, etc) are definitely worth more than the price of admission.

Misdemeanors on grad school applications
"Does she need to put it on grad school applications?"
"...she is technically obligated to put it on grad school applications."
Lying about a conviction would look worse than being honest about it.
If the application asks only about felonies, then theres no need to provide info about any non-felony convictions.

Forgot to add that you might want to get a location release from the market if you're going to be filming there.

Many video formats: success or desperation?
I think it may have more to do with the fact that we're in a sort of transition time. Standard def DVD currently has the biggest market share, so it would be foolish not to release on DVD. The studios are trying to push Blu Ray as the new physical format while at the same time online streaming / downoadable distribution is starting to take hold. It's not yet clear to the studios which of these formats will be the big winner, so they hedge their bets and release on both.... [more]

Portable Comic Readers
I picked up an Acer Aspire One yesterday, and after getting rid of the newbie friendly interface, one of the first app I added was comix.
Set the image to rotate 90 degrees and a full page is totally readable.

What's the best way to make a video go viral?
You can upload to YouTube or whatever, link it all over the place, and hope for the best, but you can't force it, theres no magic button that guarantees success. If your entire marketing campaign relies on a video going viral, you might want to rethink your campaign.

nth call the FD. They'll probably give the management company at least a warning if not a citation or a fine. False alarms degrade the FD's ability to respond to real emergencies.

They don't want your program to start right at the beginning of the tape, they wany 5 minutes of black / bars & tone / whatever before the actual footage starts.

Any local PC shop should have an eee or two in stock. If they don't, any chance you can pick one up when you arrive wherever it is you're going?

Help me find an affordable gaming laptop
NCIX has a gaming notebooks section on their Canadian site. My brother picked up an ASUS a few months back that does a great job running hl2/tf2/wow etc. It was in the $1300 CAD range.
The US site should have the same stock, but they don't have the gaming notebooks isolated from the pack.

A movie editor I am not.
How long is the video? I'm betting the crap software that came with the camera used a pretty old / inefficient codec, so you could re-encode it with a better codec, perhaps xvid or DivX and get it down to a more reasonable size.
Applications like VirtualDub for windows or AviDemux on Linux make it very easy to quickly re-encode video.
As for hosting, Vimeo generally seems to have better video quality than YouTube or Google Video, last I checked... [more]

Which audio interface to get
I've got a few M-Audio interfaces. The FastTrack Ultra routinely handles 16 channels (8 in/8 out) over a USB2 connection without any problems. USB will be just fine for what you're doing.
The FastTrack USB is very basic, 1 - XLR, 1 - 1/4" inputs, headphone and RCA outputs. It works just fine for guitar and vocals, provided you don't need phantom power.
If you want phantom power or proper stereo input, the MobilePre isn't too big a jump... [more]

PORTABLE VIDEO + MP3 PLAYER
As arcticwoman stated, 8gigs doesn't hold a lot of video. Either get a player with a larger internal capacity, or something that will take removable media. I've got a Cowon D2 that I really like, but it is a little picky about the video format. I find the 2.5" screen is big enough for me to watch a movie or some tv on.
Something to keep an eye out for is battery life, video eats up a lot more battery than audio.... [more]

Is there such a thing as a "broadcast quality" consumer camcorder?
What sort of work are you looking to do with the camera?
There's a world of difference between shooting a 30 second clip for the station's website and shooting a segment to use in the 6-o'clock news.

Is there such a thing as hardhat etiquette?
I've only seen full brim hats on linemen EHV types. Any other trade/craft I see wearing the 'standard' hard hats.
A google image search for 'lineman hard hat' brings up a couple of the full-brim hats (that for some reason glow).

No. There really isn't.
Given the choice, I'll virtually always use the Adobe apps. The only exception is in video production, where I'll use AVID tools over Premier.

DIY bumper sticker materials?
Pretty much any sign shop could cut you a bunch of bumper-sticker sized white vinyl that you could then draw on. Or you could just get them to create it and print some off, probably for much less than CafePress.

What is the best overall pitch-shifting plug-in for Pro Tools LE (Windows)?
Its been a while since I used Pro Tools, but can't you just apply one of the pitch shift plugins you already have to each of the non-drum tracks and see how it sounds? Sorry if you've already tried that, but in case you haven't, it can't hurt anything to give it a shot, its not like you can't undo it.

What do sound techs and band managers actually do?
The wikipedia article is pretty good for live sound. In smaller venues, the FOH engineer often has to deal with the monitor mixes as well. It's trivial to run a click track through a drummers in-ears, but in my experience many drummers don't like / can't play with one.
Things go a little differently depending on if its a tour or a one-time show, but a typical show breaks down very roughly like this:
Pre-Show
- set up mixers,... [more]
