Ask post: A sufficiently sturdy pillbox
What I wound up with was one of the drugstore day of the week boxes that comes with a sliding case: with case on, with case off. I also have a new purse with snug inside pockets, which may help with the chaos somewhat.

(Lest you think my original requirements were inaccurate, I shall note that the pills you see in the picture are not all of the pills I need to carry; there's a "horse pill" that I just ran out of today and need to refill and I also often throw... [more]

Ask post: Finding a Psychiatrist in New Jersey
The nice lady at my insurance helpline told me I do not need a referral for mental health services. (There is a limit to the number of visits/year, but I am not worried about that yet.) My GP is part of one of those walk-in storefront arrangements, and I don't always wind up seeing the same guy. It's fine for routine stuff, but I didn't really feel he's up on the latest in psychiatry.

Ask post: Craving a better tumala
My housemate suggests that for the recipe as is, try adding herbs/spices, or chopping up a chipotle in with the filling.

For a cheese sauce, make it with a roux (a thickener - arrowroot works) to make it more solid. You can also press ricotta a bit before using to make it a little less wet.

Ask post: A Diabetic-Friendly Easter Basket
I'm a little concerned about erythritol as well - it seems that it's supposed to have less of a laxative effect than maltitol, which means it still does have that effect. (Basically anything ending in -ol is a sugar alcohol and causes upset).

I suppose if I could find a splenda chocolate bar, I know where to find molds.

Ask post: The Amazing Bouncing Float
Honestly, I'll probably have to do it another way. A float would do it too, except I hadn't been able to get IE to do that properly either.

What really bothered me about this was the jump caused by resizing the window. Something about the re-rendering caused by the width change fixes the issue. So it's just... strange.

What I was trying to do, incidentally, was create marginalia. That is, be able to pull parenthetical remarks into a side column (or have them lay in with the text in the print layout). It works so easily in Firefox that I can only assume that the margin adjusted right float is not a hack, especially since the IE rendering error is so idiosyncratic.

Ask post: Driving from NJ to NH
Looking closer, it seems to be Mass Pike -> 290 -> 495 -> 93, which detours around Boston a little, which seems to make sense. I guess we used to catch 3 off of 495.

Ask post: Men Who Dye Their Hair
A good enough dye job shouldn't be obvious to a casual observer. When it's obvious (poorly done), that's a turnoff. Otherwise, I'd have no problem.

I think most people suggesting the professionals are doing so because it's easy for a novice to do a terrible job. Many of the women successfully dying from a box do well now because you didn't know them when they went through the first three disasters.

Greying hair looks different on other people.... [more]

Ask post: Boss Panic!
I suppose "find a new job" is out of the question?

Does he have a manager or team lead that can serve as a buffer between him and the boss? Sometimes just knowing someone else in the office has your back can help with that sort of thing.

I'm gathering from your description that the boss is not abusive or anything (in which case a call to HR is in order), but that your friend is unnerved by authority? Does his job comp for training?... [more]

Ask post: Well well...Wellbutrin?
I take Wellbutrin for clinical depression (for which it works adequately), and also have ADD. I found a slight improvement in focus, but it's not night-and-day, just a slight improvement.

roly - Welbutrin is primarily an antidepressant, but no drug does only one thing (IIRC Rogaine was originally a hypertension grug). It does seem to help some people with attention deficit as well.

Note also that Wellbutrin (bupropion hcl) is also marketed as Zyban, which is indicated for people trying to stop smoking. (It's the exact same pull, except for the name stamped on the wax finish - Glaxo Wellcome was just concerned that people trying to stop smoking would not... [more]

Ask post: Have you ever worked as a temp slave?
Quality doesn't just vary from agency to agency, but from office to office. I worked for Ranstad for many years, off and on, and even when I moved to the edge between two "territories", it was always my "home" office that found me work reliably. I had a good relationship with my main agent, which made a *big* difference. Try registering for interviews with all of the ones in your area, and use the interview to check them out.

Ask post: Getting On A Panel At A Comic Con
It really will vary from convention to convention. Some have "panels" which would suit your described panel fine. Some pay guest, some just give guest table space to sell their own stuff.

Your best bet is to go to the websites for the local conventions and email whoever's listed there as guest relations. If there's nobody listed, try to find any friendly person on staff and ask them who to talk to. Conventions tend to be incestuous affairs and very often if... [more]

Ask post: How do I find hidden job openings?
I don't know how well I can make suggestions, as I'd kind of like to be job hunting now myself and having a hard time.

Word of mouth, or personal networking, can work fairly well. The trick is to have friends who work places you would like to work and have them pass your resume around. How to make friends who work places you would like to work is an exercise left up to the reader.

If you're willing to start really far beneath yourself, you can... [more]

It's a funny thing. I'm taking bupropion hcl myself (under the brand Wellbutrin), and have stuck with it because its one of the first anti-depressants I've been on that had negligible side effects for me. Most drugs do have the long list of terrible things; they have to list all the possible effects.

Assuming you have a good doctor, trust him and take the prescription, but scrupulously track the side effects. If they get bad at all, call the doctor at once and discuss.

Yes, I'm linking to my actual pages for this. I am aware I am a vastly inferior amateur coder, etc. I'm just looking for stylistic advice about the parenthetical comments here.

With the comments pulled into a separate endnotes file, it looks like this; with the css notes, it looks like this. (In either case, there's an example in the second header "What's with the little red dots?">. I didn't like the endnotes because it requires the reader to go to... [more]

Ask post: Truly? Really and truly? Or do you just mean...
Shoulder details: As far as I know, I don't have arthritis (yet), but my joints do pop quite a bit, and I throw my shoulder out from time to time. I've always attributed it to the fact that I'm double jointed, and as the shoulder is a weak ball and socket joint to begin with, I probably stress it more than it needs. Sometimes it just aches (centered on the joint, sometimes radiating up the neck, sometimes radiating down the arm), sometimes I lose range of motion as well (I can't raise my arm... [more]

Truly? Really and truly? Or do you just mean you're very flexible?

I am capable of joining my hands over my head, elbows locked, and pulling them straight back until they touch the small of my back (when the shoulder's not frozen, of course).

I have no idea whether this qualifies by the technical definition of double jointed, but I do know that it's about 90 more degrees of rotation than the next most flexible person that I... [more]

Undo works, too, in a way. After you type in the cell and move to the next cell, the link turns blue and underlined. If you Undo (Ctrl-Z) just once, it undoes the formatting, but not what you entered.

I'd love to be able to uncheck that in AutoFormat the way you can in AutoCorrect for word, but my older version of Excel does not seem to support that.
