MeTa post: Yeah, I got my answer, but fuck you.
I usually assume that, once it's off the front page, nobody is checking back anyway, because my questions just aren't that interesting.

My donut pic just got We Demand Donut spam.
I just tagged my one photo of a donut "donut" and "doughnut" - I want We Demand Donut spam, too!

I'll be at the Compleat Strategist until 5 or 6 that day. I'll probably decide on the spot whether I'll go down to the meetup or just go home.

How's parking in the area? Looks like rather than being at the Strategist, I'll be at a baby shower in Brooklyn until 5. At that point, I'm driving, since my Brooklyn friends aren't quite close enough to mass transit for me.

Sorry I missed you. The baby shower ran long and I like my pregnant friend more than I like you guys.

MeTa post: Central NJ Meetup Part Two?
There is no Central Jersey, just a demilitarized zone between North and South Jersey.

(actually, Trenton is just a hair further south than I'm willing to venture, but a Central Jersey meetup isn't wholly out of the question.)
posted to MetaTalk by Karmakaze at 6:27 PM on February 6, 2008
I have to admit, I only prefer Princeton because it's not so far for me to drive. I live in Central Jersey myself, just the northern edge of it. (I was just teasin' ya there before, bro.)

MeTa post: Ho, Ho, Ho.
What I got for Christmas. It was a thrill a minute.
posted to MetaTalk by Karmakaze at 6:19 PM on December 25, 2007
Most importantly, for the first time our three month old slept for more than 6 hours straight, letting my wife sleep in on Christmas morning. The rest was icing on the proverbial cake. The year my neice was about that age at Christmas (well, a couple months older), I tentatively offered my brother and his wife a suplemental present: one night a month off for the next year. I'd thought they might be hesitant (everyone who's had a baby can laugh at that; what did I know?) --... [more]

MeTa post: IAALBIANYL
Lemme put this another way: I'm a software developer. While there's no official code of conduct for programmers*, there's a fairly ad-hoc — a developer who steals code, for example, will likely find himself blackballed from any serious work. Nobody's ever suggested, however, that I should my friends to pay when I host their email, or help them develop a web site, or whathaveyou.

Here's the thing, though. If your pal decides he doesn't like the website... [more]

MeTa post: DTMFJAGYOFBFW
My workplace has Websense too, but doesn't seem to block the tags page, woo hoo.

I work, um, customer relations / tech support / content management. Both our tracking system and the piece of crap software[1] we use for the content management will randomly take for-fsking-ever to either perform basic functions and/or switch between accounts. So I keep metafilter (or whatever) in another window and read a bit when I have cleared the email queue and am waiting for a call... [more]

MeTa post: Sexism debate, displaced.
But those who spent more time analyzing his sexism than his words would do us all a favour by backing off just a bit.
As opposed to those who spent more time insisting that nobody should have said anything at all, this isn't a conversation worth having, and why can't women just toughen up anyway? They could do us all a favour, too...

Just sayin'

How do you know what the motivation of the door-holder is? Are you psychic? Do you ask everyone who holds a door for you, just so you know when to be weirded out?It depends. Sometimes you don't. Sometimes you see someone hanging out by a door ignoring men who come along who jumps to open the door when a woman comes along. Then you can make an educated guess.

Additionally, you sometimes run across men (usually older men) who can't let a women hold... [more]

MeTa post: 20: Call-in Show
Man. Now I wish I'd worked up the nerve to call in. Apparently the bar wasn't set all that high after all... ;)

I'm also amused that Jessamyn was apparently interacting with networking on the Vax when I was hanging out on BBS's and taking online courses via NJIT's EIES system (technically it was "Intro to Sociology" from the now-gone Upsala College, but it was 1985, which rendered the whole thing a bit more cool. Plus I was still in high school.) It... [more]

MeTa post: 25 new posts about how it doesn't say that.
Why does everyone say "Please advise." in emails that they send to tech support?
Because they are used to emails to tech support vanishing off into the darkness, perhaps never to be heard from again. "Please advise" is their polite way of asking tech support to keep them in the loop, or at least give them some clue when/if the issue will ever be addressed.

MeTa post: Your thoughts on current and future changes to make Metafilter more woman friendly
Actually, I was thinking of Lily Tomlin's wonderfully crass: "We have reason to believe that man first walked upright to free his hands for masturbation.", a comment I have seen elicit a laugh from more than one die-hard feminist (as well as a lot of other people).I have to note, though, that the joke still works if you adjust it to "...that humankind first walked upright..."

MeTa post: WTF, quonsar?
I remember Miguel, but not why he left. Not sure if I remember Bunnyfire. And there was a big thing about "Free Quonsar", but no matter how many bottlecaps I saved, I never got one.

The best part? None of you has the first clue who I am, or cares. Man, I wish I had the time and energy to be famous enough that anyone would notice if I left, let alone felt victorious and/or disappointed about it.

I can see where "What do I get for my 30-something boyfriend who loves scuba diving, pottery, NASCAR, Iron Chef, dismembered toes, Hitler's petrified dick, and mushrooms? His favourite colour is sage green?" annoys folks.

How about "My boyfriend likes his gadget, and I have determined that he has widgets X, Y, and Z for it. I've found several other widgets for his gadget type that he does not have (yet), but I'm not sure which is most likely likely to... [more]

MeTa post: WTF, Wendell?
Am I the only person who expected something like this after posting in the e-mail meta thread? Ok - I didn't specifically expect a mass mailing, but I was pretty sure at least one mefite was going to send at least one email to me because I had posted in a thread about emails in profiles and had an email in my profile. I wouldn't have been disappointed if nothing had resulted, but I would have been surprised. And yeah, this sort of nonsense is why I have more than one email and etc.

Oh, for those who do not care for pdfs, the website has the same info: http://lubalincenter.cooper.edu/

On a separate issue. If I were to say, want to invite people to meet me at NYC at a dance performance choreographed by a friend, would that go in projects, even though it is really my friend's thing?

I suppose keeping it to yourself isn't an option, is it?

In my case, it's an option. It's not as though I never go places that I think other MeFites might enjoy. I just don't feel popular enough to demand the attention.

It was a theoretical question, mostly. By and large if I arrange an expedition, I post the logistics on my livejournal, on the assumption that's a more targeted audience.

As if the tags on the post don't make it perfectly obvious that the linked site is an artist's portfolio. I really wish Matt or Jess would flush the annoying complaining comments. The tags don't show on the main page. If the point is "I want to know whether to click on this or move on", then making it mandatory to click on the comments to find that out is kind of counterproductive.

If, for example, it were found that removing parts of the vulva would reduce incidence of cancer of the vulva, then we would certainly not begin to think that removal of the vulva may be a healthy option.

In fact, it would be considered absurd to even investigate the possible benefits of such a procedure. Such research would never be funded here.

Karmakaze, you realize that breasts are considered secondary sexual characteristics, correct, and aren't analogous to primary sexual characteristics, i.e., genatalia?
Astonishingly enough, possessing a pair myself, I am aware of that. I'm also aware that they are a visible sexual characteristic, and are extremely fetishised in our culture. And yet, amazingly enough, some women choose mastectomies rather than risk cancer. Had you bothered to read the quoted text... [more]

Do you really have many meaningful discussions about how Empire relates to universal mythic archetypes with people who haven't even seen the movie?

No, but I might have a meaningful discussion about how various movies relate to universal mythic archetypes without stopping every five minutes to poll everyone in the room (and anyone who might happen by in the next five minutes) about what movies they have or haven't seen.
